well i went to order some manga from play.com (seeing borders didn't have vol 6 of fruits basket) so i did a nice search and came up with this.

http://www.play.com/Books/Books/6-/Sear ... chsource=1

hurray, cheap manga, good work play sept for 1 slight problem

I'm now having to cross reference the covers with up1's due to the fact it is impossible to see (bar 1 or 2) which volume is which. no notes in the information either, bit of a bad service don't you think?

I don't know, it's not too bad with Fruits Basket at least, as all the volumes have the number on the front cover - just click on the image to expand it.

Yeah I have this problem all the time, most recently when ordering my Comic Party mangas, its really annoying that they don't post the volume number as it means you have to seach amazon and then check the pictures against each other and hope it all works out fine when they get delivered.

I've looked at Play before for manga, but I don't trust buying something there in case I got the wrong thing. When it comes to feeds for retail websites, I wouldn't order with just the cover to go on as the cover could very easily be wrong.

At the minute most of the manga I buy I get from http://www.bookdepository.co.uk and haven't had a problem yet thankfully. Free P&P so I don't have to order £15 worth from Amazon or pay shipping from UP1.

I have to admit I have bought a lot of anime from play using only the covers for reference and I have never been misdelivered anything so they are good in that respect

thats the problem, even with the image enlarged, the quality of the picture is so bad you can't tell if it's a 2, 3, 8 12, 13 or 18 for example

I could tell ok...

Still, I get your point, on other series it could really be a problem.
Lack of website info for a web-based company is quite a serious flaw...

I've recently been using http://www.bookdepository.co.uk for most of my manga, they are often far cheaper than anywhere else and the service is very good.

I was looking at some anime on hmv.co.uk and they only have the names on some of there titles so I had to check the order against other websites.

That's pretty annoying. I normally get around it by copying the ISBN and pasting it in Amazon to double-check it's the right book. :?

Just remember that this is not a problem that just Play.com have but amazon.co.uk and amazon.com have too, sometimes even worse. Its when you find a book without a pic or an adequate title that things get crazy. You would think they would notice that nobody bought it? Almost as crazy as anime-on-line.co.uk and their wallscrolls and T-Shirts without pictures and just a series name

Anyone if you want to complain send a message to play.com. They wont know it bothers us unless you tell them.

Yes I had that problem with Amazon and found out that in the absence of volume numbers relying on the images is not the answer as I still got the wrong volume.

Also watch out for the Amazon market traders as they are even more unreliable in this respect. I've had copies of Battle Angel Alita where I got the correct volume but the wrong issue(?) ie instead of right to left I got the older left to right version.

E-mailing them is a great idea. I'm going to do it this afternoon and I hope some of you will too.

Would just like to say thanks to you both for pointing out 'The Book Depository'! They have great prices and a great selection. The free delivery thing is ace, too.
