Its pretty good. Though the volumes that came out after the anime seem to have just drifted off aimlessly.

The Planetes anime is one of the best of all time. It built up slowly and then become this awe-inspiring story, made all the more powerful for being very believable.
The anime spun a larger story, and a continuous story out of the episodic and fairly independent manga story elements. Certainly the manga comes across as a series of short stories featuring the same cast.
The anime simply supersedes the manga, but the events of the anime only really cover the first three volumes. The anime ending is simply stunning, and there was an opportunity for the manga to develop along those lines. It didn't take the bait though, it just continued to develop in its own way, and in fact many of the following stories just aren't as good as what came before. Many characters are out of the equation now, and there is a bit of a disconnect.
Basically its not just that he didn't continue the anime story, but the followup chapters are simply not as good.
