Overall best 2D fighter and one that cater to my tastes?

Smash brothers is a bit of weird one as victory may come down to luck of what item as appears at you feet to use. Also the factor how your opponents act which will decide the outcome of the battle. No matter how good you are I can't imagine someone could win 100% of the time If the other 3 gang up on them.

I just noticed this, and it's something you're looking at the wrong way. SSBM doesn't have lucky items, because competitive matches have their own rules where items are removed - the game offers a lot of customisation so players have helped balance it out.

As for victory depending on how many people gang up on you, once again in competitive play it's 1 vs. 1 matches, people only play four player to **** around in casuals, a serious match of skill is always a 1 on 1.

Don't even think about BlazBlue, I don't know who recommended that but it's basically the opposite of what you're looking for. Unfortunately your choices are limited to games like SSBM or Dissidia, because this is similar to an FPS player looking for a multiplayer shooter that uses lock-on because aiming gives people who practice an unfair advantage.

I say buy a stick and a copy of SSF4, put some effort into actually practising with your main character and learning combos will become second nature in no time. Street Fightet IV isn't even about big combos due to the damage scaling mechanic, and depending on your character, you may not need to rely on many combos at all. Random example would be Zangief, how many combos have you seen him do in competitive matches? He's all about setting up those command throws, no combos needed.

Also, if you do have a copy of SSF4 by any chance, give me some matches, I like to play as many AUKN members as I can, though mostly it's just me and Arbalest.

I think with taking away the 4 player and weapon you are losing half the appeal of SSBM. I don't think SSBM with it not concentrating on 1 on 1 style that street fighter has been perfecting for close to near 2 decades that it can come anywhere close regard the 1 on 1 fighter.

I will probably get Super Street Fighter IV at some point with either fight pad or joystick which ever I can find on offer at a good price. I would personal prefer the fight pad, always liked the floaty d pad ever since mega drive and I have little experience with joystick in general.

I beg to differ regarding how suitable 1v1 is for SSBM, but as this is about finding a game suitable for your needs, I guess that means we can safely assume SSBM is out of the window. Regarding SSF4, I think that's a good choice purely because of the fact it will help you get much more comfortable with the fighting game genre in general, so the more you play it, the less of an issue you'll have with a lot of other traditional fighting games out there.

Don't buy those silly fight pads unless you have a vendetta against sticks for some bizarre reason. There are various advanced level tricks you simply cannot do on a pad, so the sooner you move away from them the better, assuming of course you actually want to not suck, if you're just a casual then by all means, pads are fine to play with.

I have already got some experience with 1 on 1 beat-em up, just checking to see if there was anything more user friendly than street fighter but does not seem their is.

The fight pads aren't silly, they actual quite well received and certain step up from the official controller for either current systems. Their are few problem with Joystick with them cost 3 time the cost of the fightpad, time to adjust to them, portability and gaining some what unfair advantage over player who can't afford or not willing to pay £45-100 to get an extra edge. £45 minimum is a lot to pay for something I don't know truly if I will full get into.

Also If really get into 1 on 1 fighters I could always get joystick later down the line and let my opponent play with fightpad so would even out contest more. As someone adapt with the joystick would have massive advantage over someone using the poorer standard controls pad for xbox 360.

As I stated in another thread, if you are happy playing in your comfort zone at the same skill level, you've no need for expensive things to improve your game. I say forget the arcade stick and just have fun with a normal controller, and be not quite as good at the game as the people who give up countless hours at it.

Well, looks like your mind is set then, which is good.

If you pick up SSF4 for the 360, add Nemphtis to your friends list and we can have a few matches. :D

I use a fightpad. Unless you have aspirations to play at tournament level, that will suffice. Having said that, I watched some tournament footage over the weekend and one of the players was using a PS3 controller.

With the series becoming more accessible, and online play becoming more viable as a way to practice, indeed more players are turning up to tournaments with standard pads than ever before.

An update:

Finally got a Fight Pad, not bad still discomfort with prolong use but still better than majority of other pads I have tried. Still I can see the advantage of more comfort with a joystick and easier access to button. So I will likely pick up a joy stick once one appears on offer

I decided against Street Fighter 4 in the end, it simply look too defense minded and beside I think I am bit bored with fighting the original cast.

After playing & watching the beauty of street fighter 3 I decided to get that instead. A lot more complex granted that street fighter 4, but it just looks a more fun and interesting fighter compared Street Fighter 4.

I am playing it by using Street Anniversary original Xbox game and playing it on Xbox 360 using the backward compatibility feature, running well so far.

They didn't officially announce the new Darkstalkers yet!

I've just started playing Blazblue: Continuum Shift. Really nice game.

Japanese import, US is out at the end of the month. I would advise people to wait, as you would lose the story mode if you didn't read Japanese, as well as some of the stuff in tutorial mode if you were looking on using that.

Continuum Shift is out October here. DLC characters are awful besides Makoto and their themes are worse. I'll probably get it and avoid the first one.
