Otogi Zoshi

Nemphtis

Hunter
Searched for a topic but couldn't find one, so here we are. I bought the first volume last week or something and I have to say I was impressed. I mean it's no surprise that the animation quality is superb when you look at who made it, but I seriously couldn't find any noticable faults about the first volume.

The action scenes were interesting, the plot felt thick from the start, and only got thicker as each episode unfolded. Where as normally the plot starts off simple and gets thicker eventually or all of a sudden. I dunno, I just liked that little thing, but I was surprised to see it based around the Magatama as I was just reading Battle Vixens before popping the DVD in and I thought it was a funny coincidence.

So what did the rest of you think of the first volume, or if you havn't bought this yet are you planning on getting it? I think this series has good potential and NEO Magazines five-star rating was spot-on, as it deserved nothing less than the best from my point of view.

Which twist are we talking about?

You mean where they find out they need more than one Magatama to save their city?

Really? I didn't know they did that, keep in mind I've only seen the first volume. This is one of those series' I'm going to collect through DVD and not watch it all at once online, I like the feeling of suspense so I do that sometimes.

Top top show, loved this when I watched the whole series via fansub, got the whole show watched in under a week, that's pretty good for me

Unlike Gilgamesh, I found the fight scenes caught my eye alot more. The ones at the start were average at best, but after the first episode some of the fighting was quite nice. :)

What Necromancer said wrt Spoilers. That particular spoil was well hyped by the blog community, and I nearly avoided it. WHich is a shame. The reaction of my friend when he hit episode 14 was priceless, I would have liked to experience that particular WTF moment myself.

Certainly the production values of Otogizoushi were brilliant. Also, by the end of the disc you get introduced to the interesting character Uraba.

The great thing about the fights in Otogizoushi, was the fact that Hikaru was an archer. Archer Bushi are great in anime, and terribly underused.

Somebody should make an anime that features Parthian style horse archers, that would look class.

I agree, the mix of an Archer to support the close combat fighters was a nice change from the usual Samurai-style series' out there. I can't remember who Uraba was but if he's that funky guy with the twin-blades who is obsessed with getting with women then yeah, that guy rocks. He's nothing special in the originality department but it's always nice to have a resident jackass/clown who spices things up for the gang. :)

That funky guy is Sadamitsu, Uruba is the other woman who joins the part and killed all those guys with poison.

What are the historical bonus features like? Apparently the show was a real pain to get good details for, because very little historical sources exist for the period. They had interviews with academic experts and such which sounded cool.

Apparently Hikaru as an archer was actually historically consistent, as many Bushi of the time would specialise in such a way, rather than in swords or other period weapons.

Oh yeah that lady, I didn't notice her much since she didn't make me laugh or do something really cool that made me say... "Cool" or something... But yeah I look forward to seeing what she turns out like because I remember them saying that she will be the cause of something bad or something like that, it was in the episode preview thingy.

I enjoyed the first volume of Otogi Zoshi, but it wasn't quite as good as I was expecting. Think what I liked most about it was a lot of the background art direction.

Very nice...

After watching the second volume, I felt slightly unfulfilled yet again. Don't get me wrong, its a better than average series but something hasn't clicked with me.

The animation and artwork isn't in question. The characters are liakable and the story could head in any number of different directions, but something hasn't quite clicked with me yet. I got a feeling the English dub being a bit too simple (for me personally) might explain it. I'll see what its like in Japanese language with English subtitles and see what happens then.

Still, its way better than most stuff I watch. :)

I thoroughly enjoyed this series and am glad to see it making a long overdue appearance in the UK. As far as the magatama goes as well as many other characters and places that are mentioned in the anime, they are very much tied in with history, myth and folklore and there are lots of other crossovers I could mention. Another one that people may have noticed is the character Abe no Seimei who, unless I am very much mistaken, is the same as the Abeno Seimei mentioned in Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi.

I just realised the third official UK volume release of Otogi Zoshi was today! I forgot to pre-order it! I'm paid tomorrow, so that'll be something worth ordering I feel. :)

Yes, that volume brings the Heian-kyo arc to an end. It all turns on its head after that :).

I've ordered it from Play.com but its temporary out of stock. Not to worry, other stuff to enjoy in the meantime.

I hear after the Heian arc is done it sets iteself up in modern Japan, right?

Don't tell me! I'll keep it as a surprise!
