Here's the full story in greater detail:
At the One Piece panel, hosted jointly by Toei Animation and FUNimation Entertainment, Mike McFarland, the voice director of Funimation's dub of the series confirmed the new cast for the upcoming Cartoon Network broadcast of the third season of One Piece. The new voices are:
Luffy: Colleen Clinkenbeard
Nami: Luci Christian
Zorro: Chris Sabat
Usopp: Sonny Strait
Sanji: Eric Vale
Chopper: Brina Palencia
Robin: Stephanie Young
He also mentioned that the DVD box sets of the series that will be released starting next year will keep the original spellings of all of the characters' names. The eighth One Piece movie, Episode of Alabaster will be released on DVD sometime in 2008 as well. Unfortunately, while Funimation had hoped to release the first two seasons of the series, Viz still holds the rights to those episodes.
Here are my views:
Coleen as Luffy. I'm a bit skeptic with this one. Not because it's a female, but because I looked at Coleen's past works from the site and there wasn't any roles she had done that were male roles. So it should be interesting to hear how she sounds.
Luci as Nami. Perfect, just perfect. I've been a huge fan of her work since her role as Kaname Chidori from Full Metal Panic! and I think she would be a perfect role for Nami.
Chris as Zoro. Interesting that Funi decided to get the man who voiced Vegeta to do Zoro, it could work.
Sonny as Ussop. Again, another Dragonball Z VA that Funi brought back, this time Krillin. Again, it could work.
Eric as Sanji. I could see a possible fit. I've seen him as Yuki from Fruits Basket and Kimblee in Fullmetal Alchemist, it could be interesting how he works in comedic moments.
Brina as Chopper. I don't know who she is, so I can't comment on that.
Stephanie as Robin. This one pissed me off because I had high hopes that Laura Bailey (Lust - FMA) would get the role as Robin. I don't know who this VA is that's doing Robin instead, but I hope she's good.
Horray for TV series box sets and Funi putting Toei in their place and keeping the original names.
Boo for Movie coming out in 2008. Why? What's the point? The movie sucked balls. There were so many inconsistencies in the movie, I can't count. (Like, why did they use the same music from Lucci's defeat for Crocodile's defeat instead of using the same song from the TV series?)
Oh, and a big **** YOU to Viz for still holding the license of the first 2 seasons of One Piece and not giving them to Funi.
