The 57th volume of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece pirate manga sold 1,690,932 copies in its first week of sales — a new record in first-week sales for any book sold in Japan. The 57th volume's sales topped the previous record-holder, the 56th volume's 1,363,868 copies which were sold in the first week of December. Shueisha printed a record 3 million copies of the 57th volume, which is more than any book ever had in its first printing in Japan.

It will be a while before anything risks Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen Mae Hashutsujo (kochikame)'s crown, it's at 168 volumes ongoing. One piece is suposed to only last about 100.

But then again, Kochikame is not a big seller as one piece is even though it has almost 3 times the number of volumes. It wouldn't surprise me if One piece has oversold Kochikame already though.

Only reason i'd see One Piece end at 100 volumes is if Shounen Jump forced Oda to do so. And if they do, i'll rage. Oda should have the right to end the story when he sees fit to, not when they want to. I know it doesn't work that way, but still..

Unless Oda signed an exclusivity contract or that the characters belong to SJ instead of to himself, I don't see why he should take anything like this from SJ.

I mean, whichever magazine runs One piece will have a huge following.

One Piece is that popular now, Oda wouldn't be forced to do anything he was not willing to do. He made that much money from it now he could easily retire. But he still enjoying creating One Piece it will continue as long as Oda wants it too.

If an Mangaka really wants to finish a manga there little the editors can do to stop them. Look at Yoshihiro Togashi who just finish creating Yu Yu Hakusho when shonen jump didn't want him to. It didn't effect his career as he is still creating working with Shonen Jump with Hunter X Hunter to this day.

I'm sure they can convince him if his thinking of jumping ship to at least go to monthly publication, but I think ever since the early days when Oda went past that original 5 Year Plan or whatever, he's just been rolling with it.

How's Clannad going for you? Good, yeah?

This comment was totally necessary.

It's on volume 57 and you'll rage if it ends after 100? Isn't that a bit like saying you'd rage if Terry Pratchett doesn't write another 30 Discworld books? One step at a time Arby, for all you know it might have gone horribly downhill in ten volumes time and you might be begging for it to end before it gets any worse. ;)

/talking about manga he doesn't even read.

It boggles my mind that later volumes will most likely sell even more.

You quoted the thing I was asking about in reply? I'm very confused but obviously missing something. My point was that you can't possibly know what will have happened in the series so far into the future. I can undertand anyone saying they'd rage if their favourite manga ended in another one or two volumes, but after another 43? Everything might be wrapped up perfectly by then.

You're clearly missing the point which is obvious by your admittance of not even reading it. The way the manga is going it's going to need more than 43 volumes is what Arby was getting at. Don't comment on it if you know nothing about it.

Fair enough, but couldn't you just have quoted my post and said:

In the first place without confusing me and then getting pissy about it? :?

All I did was point out something for you and hoped you'd have enough comprehension to put two and two together. I think it's you getting pissy, dude.

I currently have the same expression as my avatar. "Don't comment on it if you know nothing about it" Seems like a bit of a defensive phrase, that's all. And yeah, I admit that sometimes I need things explaining to me. Show me someone who doesn't.

To be fair to ayase, I also interpreted in a similar way to him. I'm not even sure I want One Piece to go on that long, because granted I'm currently only watching the series - not reading the manga but hell, in a decades time I'm not even sure I'll be following it. I hope I will be, but I'm doubtful.
