i must agree with you on this, the anime version of this which covered the whole tony tony chopper backstory and him joining the crew, had tears slowly building up on me EYES!
its just so sad, and the music and all the tension was just perfect....it was one of the few times than an anime had me feeling sad, and tears faintly on my eyes lol

Ikue Ootani brought him to life, it was like some sort of magic, I know I cried, such a powerful voice.

But... Nico Robin's backstory is way worse, plus he animated form is so cute. <3

Sadly I haven't seen the anime version for Nico Robin story.... but will check it out soon somewhere! I read it on manga! Nami story was also touching...

Hmm, it was really short, but I liked the Logue Town bit the best. Hard to say why, just seems to have a more intense atmosphere than other arcs. Other than that, I don't really have any preference - they were all fun, but I didn't think any were amazing.

And no, I didn't cry...

Nico Robin's>Nami's>Choppers>Usopp's>Zoro's>Sanji's>Luffy's.

In that order for me is the saddest backstories, the females really do have it rough.

I think Chopper's arc was definitely the most gut wrenching, emotionally draining character back story. It's just the fact he's so friendly and gets treated so badly; even Doctor Hiluluk dies. The anime totally captured Chopper's character and the magical, seasonal surroundings of his home.

Nami's Arlong Park story was absolutely captivating too - if fairly brutal (trying to scrape off a tattoo with a knife in a fit of rage) - for the first time it really emphasized the danger of their travels and the bond between the Straw Hats; the lengths to which Luffy is willing to go for his nakama.

Ramadahl's made a good shout with Logue Town too. It's easy to forget because it's such a short arc, but it rife with drama, mystery and just pure adventurous fun. It's very much the climax of the East Blue voyages and brings together many interesting characters for the first time (it was great to see Buggy struggling his way after Luffy!) - not to mention some very memorable flashbacks to the execution of Gol D. Rodger. Logue Town has this great moment at the end where all the characters, moving forwards through the sea, announce their dreams to each other. A similar thing happens when they enter the Grand Line for the first time. I love that kind of sentimental ambition.

I felt that Sanji's was more upsetting than both Usopp's and Zoro's, but I'm basing that just on the manga and not the anime.

Usopp's mother died yet he still had happiness, Zoro's best friend who he made a pact with died too, the day after they made the very same part for "The worlds greatest swordsman." While Sanji was stranded on a island with Zeff the Red-Leg eating his own leg and giving Sanji all the food. Meh.

i've not read to much on the manga as yet, but in the anime i am on about episode 64, dunno which arc that is. But so far Nami's arc was probably the saddest i've seen yet and really showed to me what lengths luffy would go to to help his nakama. The loguetown arc was also good although short.

Zeff gave up his dream to save Shuji's life. The other people had no choice when they died. It just seemed sadder to me that Zeff would do that for a child that he didn't even know.

I have been reading ahead and the moment that THE Going Merry is burnt in a viking send off made me cry abit but also Nami stabbing herself to get rid of the arlong tatoo in the arlong arc made me cry aswell

Manga only so far: I thought the going Merry was sad, but what was even more emotional is when Luffy and Usopp fight for the Merry and Usopp takes Luffys words the wrong way when he's not thinking straight and Usopp leaves on Water 7, good scene.
