Odin Sphere

This was a new game that I only required a few weeks back, which has only been released to the UK in late march (when in ... said it was going to be released in October last year) though better late then never, and so I thought I'd but a small review and overview on it.
The story is set in the world of Erion, which is split into several regions, Ragnanival,Volkenon, Ringford, Endelphia, Winterhorn Ridge and the forest of Elrit. The story tells of an ill-forgotten prophecy, that if fulfilled will lead to the destruction of their world.
Though the most interesting part is that it is split into five different stories that tell of five hero's, were in one you could be the protagonist in one, and the antagonist in another. While the last story tells of the destruction of the world!
The stories tell of Gwendolyn the Valkyrie, Cornelius the Pooka prince, Mercedes the fairy queen, Oswald the dark night and Velvet the last surviving princess of Valentine.

Another unique entity to this game is that it is done by hand rendered sprites, seen here.
As the images show, they are simply breath taking and splendid to the eye. Since they are sprites, the movement of game play is only liner and the attack sequences are done by waves of enemy's with difficulty skills, but its the shear simplicity that makes this game so unique above the rest.
Plus it has a straight forward plot, so it doesn't need research on stragity guides to find un-lockables

The gaming development was created by Vanillaware and pubilshed by Atlus (Disagea, Truma Centre), though it was distributed by Square Enix for European release. We have have a very interesting line-up for the characters voice roles

  • -Gwendolyn: jp(Ayako Kawasumi ) eng(Mia Bradly)
    -Cornelius: jp(Daisuke Namikawa ) eng(Yuri Lowenthal)
    -Mercedes jp(Mamiko Noto) eng(Stephanie Sheh)
    -Oswald jp(Susumu Chiba ) eng(Derek Steven Prince)
    --Velvet jp(Miyuki Sawashiro) eng(Michelle Ruff)

Of course these voices can be changed in the options menu if you prefer Japanese with subs

This is a must have if you like anime and manga (which you must do :p)

Odin Sphere has actually taken my interest for a while, i'm not entirely sure why either. It certainly looks more unique to most which could easily be one reason as to why i'm slightly taken to buying it. It has japanese with subs? i'll say this much, that does feel rare for the likes of Atlus, since most of the time, like Disgaea(mind you it could be down to NIS), the US are the lucky ones to get it, whilst we have to make do with just the english voice cast.

I've seen that game in gamestation a few weeks ago.

not really my style and to be honest looks like another final fantasy wannabe :/

the ps2 platforms no problem, i was playing a war strategy game lastnight :thumb:

When i looked last, Odin sphere appeared to me more like a side scroller of a sort than a turn based, or time based strategy. The only reason it has SquEnix in the name is as it was distributed here, it wasn't made by them, so how it looks like a final fantasy wannabe, i have no idea =/

Sorry, i was merely glancing at the case and thought "thats another ff wannabe" it's bad to assume i know,

at a glance i thought this game was:
another rpg/hack and slach sort of game
final fantasy inspired as its got the whole "magical world" that ff has
its going to be another drawn out story.

I did also wrote that it was only distributed from square enix, but yes on a side note it is a rpg, (for all the fus I kicked up about it) so its not going to have down to earth themes

Arbalest, have you ever tried the Atelier Iris series from Gust. When I got the second squeal it had the same Japanese dub change features. which I'm sure is in most Gust developed games.
