Nyu's Recommendation thread

That's a little unfair on PS2 games >.>

Graphics aside, my main problem with Appleseed is the same problem I have with others of Shirow's works - the stories are poor. Appleseed has the plot of your standard action film, everything black or white, and every plot twist visible from miles away.

Of course, if you like action films then it may well be for you - just not my cup of tea...

REC is something of an oddity by anime standards, being a fairly realistic romance. No magical powers or legions of girls, just a guy in a crap job, and a girl struggling to make a break as a voice actor. I think the short length (about that of a movie) works well here, as it stops the series dragging on beyond it's natural lifetime with unnecessary procrastination.

If you want a romance anime, I'd recommend checking this out. There are better ones out there (Kare Kano, Saikano, Bokura ga Ita...) but it's a solid show and short enough that even if you end up not liking it you won't have wasted much time.

This would be correct, i think it's wanting a bit too much from something along the lines of Appleseed. You can get great action or great story, but it's very hard to pull both off. In my opinion theres enough to make it interesting and it's a good action flick.

Couldn't have said it better myself. There are better examples of Romance out there but that doesn't mean to say REC is bad, it's enjoyable for the most part. I think the reality of it is what has drawn me in, it focuses more on the relationships between the two characters and how daily life can either be a burden or a pleasure.

If you exclude the intros it is only 90 minutes long. But again its a catch 22, it's good because it's short e.g no filler but it's over too soon. I think this series deserves another season, i would be very pleased if it did. Also the opening song was extremeley catchy, i liked it alot.

Its basically a killer movie and I have to say i laughed through most of the eps, the characters are easy to love and the whole time you are routing for them to get together. Plus there is no stupid punch ups and fantasy fight scenes which makes a refreshing change.

I especially liked the way other characters were pushing them to be together without actually coming out and saying they know they like each other.

I have really gotta watch this series again one night, I loved the ep where he had to spend days in the giant suit while she used the microphone behind curtain, they were so cute together

Cowboy Bebop The Movie - If i was being honest i didn't know what to expect before i was going to watch this film. I thought it would be a let down a wouldn't hold a candle to the series in so many ways, however, i have been gladly proven wrong. I was glued to the screen for the whole hour and fifty minutes, absolutley superb. The DVD is worth it's weight in gold. The featurettes are pretty nice too, very interesting.

After watching all of the dvd i get a clearer understanding of what some parts of the film were about and why it was so good. It's nice to see the story was actually meant for the TV series and incorporates all of the existing elements that were layed down, which to me made it seem like one big juicy episode. While doing all of that they managed to open up a bit more to Spike. This is all about Spike and doesn't give much if any thought to the development of the other characters, which is a shame.

The story itself is interesting and doesn't get boring nor repetitive over the duration of the film. The characters also act with eachother exactley as
before, it is perfectly done. Now to harper on about the animation side. What i seen in this film had a more polished look compared to the series. That is not to say the animation in the series was bad, it was anything but bad. But everything just felt better. The movements were more fluid, the designs of the characters looked crisper and the scenery was simply fantastic.

On some of the flying scenes and general overviews of the city you could see the tiniest detail on the most obscure building, that is attention to detail for you. The credit sequence was also great to watch, much like the very last episode of the series there is still alot going on when the credit roll and the message at the end was really the icing on the cake for me.

The soundtrack as usual is a delight to the ears, Yoko Kano has worked her magic again and produced some good songs on par with her original work. The symponies however were forgetable and completley overshadowed by Kano's soundtrack. Possibly used the same singers as the series but i haven't double checked yet. Sure sounds like them though.

Overall a great film and enjoyable for fans of the series and those who haven't seen it before, there won't be much to get confused over if you haven't seen the TV series but why the hell haven't you in the first place? I would say this film gets a 5/5 from me, i loved it from start to finish.

in that list I only know Angelic layer.... I guess I missing a lot but I'm also busy watching other anime beside from that list..... Keep on recommending I might find something I'm interested in......

Since i have just finished Black Lagoon (Frigging awesome) and i'll be finishing Kanon 2006 tomorrow i need two new series to watch. I need one action show such as Bebop/Black Lagoon etc and i'm thinking of starting Suzuka or Hataraki Man. So c'mon guys, fire your recommendations this way.

Also Maria-sama ga Miteru is currently on my back burner, nothing that interests me enough to get past episode 3 and frankly watching two brilliant series has pushed me away from it. Will pick it up at a later date probably.

By the sounds of it i think REC will also be the next one i watch. Although atm im watching the eureka series all over again because its my favourite anime of all time! What do you lot think about E7?

Kanon 2006

Plot Summary: Yuichi Aizawa returns to this city after seven years. In his childhood, he often visited it, but something happend in the past which caused him to block out his memories of the events of seven years ago. On the day after he gets settled in, he meets a girl carrying a backpack with wings on it. Her name is Tsukimiya Ayu and he begins to recall the memories he had lost.

Now I’ll be honest here, when I first started watching Kanon there was nothing that smacked me as wow! I didn’t see what the majority of the hype was about and why people were raving about it. I thought the animation was ok, but then again what Kyoto product isn’t these days? The soundtrack I though was lackluster and somewhat boring, it just didn’t feel to me like it fitted. I did however enjoy the characters from the word go, while they may have had the generic backdrop their personalities were brilliant from the start.

As time went on and I started watching more episodes the things that I didn’t like at the beginning were slowly ironed out. The animation seemed more fluid in the later episodes than the start, the overall finish and quality of the series seemed to get better as time went on. That’s not to say that it wasn’t good looking to begin with, but it just didn’t seem to stand out in the beginning. In general though, the character designs were cute and well done, plus their movements were natural. The backgrounds were actually very well done, I’ve seen images comparing the bench area (you’ll know once you watch) to the ones in real life and the layout is uncanny. There is some use of CG use in Kanon, although it’s mostly used on the Cars and some of the other nasty stuff we see.

The story was decent enough, Yuichi slowly pieces his memory together as more and more characters are brought into the mix. Each new character has it’s own story arc and they are very entertaining to watch, I couldn’t pick a favourite as I really liked each and every one.

The funny thing about Kanon is while the story is above average the characters themselves are simply amazing. I can use every superlative in the book to describe how good these characters interact with each other but I would sound like a broken record. Each individual character on their own has their strengths but when another member of the cast joins in it is viewing nirvana, They could scrap every piece of credible story for all I care but as long as Yuichi and Ayu are on the screen I would still watch Kanon and love it. The amount of care and detail that has been put into each character is breathtaking, whether it be their design, their background, the interactions with other characters it all just fits together and works. I could go into each individual character, but I’ll save that for later.

The biggest change in my opinion was the soundtrack, in the beginning it didn’t strike me as anything amazing but oh boy was I wrong. The sheer detail in choosing and performing the right piece for the scene was just breathtaking. The Piano solos in some of the episodes were delightful and I found myself watching the same piece over and over just because of the music. Also in episodes 10 and the final episode the build up to the final song was just something I will never forget, coupled with the story and characters I will always treasure those endings. The same goes for the intro and ending themes, at first they were dull and seemed out of place but now they have grown on me and honestly I couldn’t see any other song in their place.

This is just a general overview of my opinion, I really could go on for pages. 2006 has produced some of the best series I’ve seen, Kanon is by far one of the best anime in the last 5 years. Each component of the show on it’s own is good and has it’s flaws but when you put them all together to get the final product it just has this certain feel to it. The characters are believable and everyone will have their favourites, the animation is easy on the eyes and a delight to watch, couple this with a fantastic soundtrack and you get something of such a high standard that Kyoto animation is giving itself even bigger boots to fill.

Kanon gets nothing short of an A+ from me, Superb!
