The next Studio Ghibli film has been revealed as "Gedo Senki: Tales from Earthsea", an adaptation of the book "A Wizard Of Earthsea" by American author Ursula Le Guin. Goro Miyazaki (the son of Hayao Miyazaki) will be directing the film. The film is set for Japanese release next July. [Animenation]

I know the elder Miyazaki is a fan of the Earthsea stories, and for a well-known fantasy adventure for youngsters, Ghibli are the best studio to carry it out.

There is still the rather intriguing issue of Hayao not wanting Goro to direct, but hopefully Miyazaki Junior will have picked up some techniques and ideas from his old man over the years! Whichever way you look at it, Ghibli need to get fresh talent through their ranks to maintain their reputation and if a current director's son is a good candidate for the task he should be given the chance.

Oooh how exciting! It will be interesting to see the differences (if any) between father and son's directing skills. I've got high hopes for this one actually. Let's hope they're justified!

The only time I've come across the Earthsea story was when the Sci-Fi Channel did a tv movie based on it and it showed on channel 4, it was pretty awfull, hoepfully this will be better.

I'm with Hayao on this one. I fail to see any logic in bringing Goro in to direct; he has not an ounce of experience of anything within the anime industry. He's just riding in on the name which is a very sorry state of affairs. Here's hoping that Ghibli's component parts are good enough to carry whatever the hell director they have.

I wonder what this means as far as Hayao directing again for Ghibli?

Anyway, I'm excited to see what the younger Miyazaki presents us with - who knows, the reason his father is against it could be because he fears the amazing talents of his son will put his own work to shame - just kidding.

No, someone else had to take over sooner or later, and to be honest, I think whoever it was would have come under some criticism just for the fact that they are not Hayao Miyazaki.

Frankly I'm quite excited to see some new blood directing, the only films of Myazaki's I've really liked are Nausicaa and Spirited Away so Im interested to see what Goro can do.

After doing a bit of investigating on ANN, I see Kupo's point. As far as their database is concerned, Goro has done no work on any anime at all, which is the best reason I can see that explains why Hayao is still against it. Of course it is perfectly possible that Goro has natural talent but because he has no past experience we just don't know.

Things were different in the case of Hiroyuki Morita, Ghibli's other new director: he worked on a number of other projects prior to being placed in charge of directing The Cat Returns, which included storyboards and key animation. Everyone has to start somewhere, but placing someone in charge of a film with no prior experience of the techniques is a bit risky. If Hayao is unhappy with Goro directing because of this, I'd agree with him.

I think fans of the books hated the TV series. Ursula Le Guin certainly didn't think much of it...
