Two years have passed since Akiyuki Shinbo and Gen Urobuchi followed up their critically acclaimed macabre magical girl series with the theatrical follow-up <strong>Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie: Rebellion</strong> and now, the gears are finally turning for the popular franchise to return.

During the recent "<em>Madogatari</em>" event celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the SHAFT animation studio's founding, a short concept movie was shown, which became the subject of an interview in the January 2016 issue of Newtype magazine. Mitsutoshi Kubota, the president and representative director of the company, noted that the concept movie is effectively the trailer for a new instalment in the franchise. In regards to the future of the franchise, Kubota singled out the character Mami as having a strengthened role, comaring her to Guan Yu from <em>The Romance Of The Three Kingdoms</em>.

Cast and crew from previous entries in the franchise returned for the concept movie, such as Chief Director Akiyuki Shinbo (<em>Bakemonogatari</em>), composer Yuki Kajiura (<em>Fate/Zero</em>) and the series' principle cast - including Kana Asumi reprising her role of Nagisa Momoe from <em>Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie: Rebellion</em>.

The original <em>Puella Magi Madoka Magica</em> television anime, its recap movies <em>Beginnings</em> and <em>Eternal</em>, as well as the theatrical sequel <em>Rebellion</em> are all available on DVD and blu-ray in the United Kingdom, courtesy of Manga Entertainment.

So it's official now? Awesome. However I REALLY need to know the extent of Urobuchi's involvment this. I'd also be interested to see if this is going to be a new series or a new movie.

It's been verified by other, reputable sources, so at this stage I'd say so.

You do make a very good point about Urobuchi considering Aldnoah.Zero and Psycho Pass 2, but I imagine his position is safe here as apparently he and the rest of Magica Quartet (Akiyuki Shinbo, Aoi Yuki and SHAFT) have been discussing ideas for a follow-up since Rebellion - which led to the concept movie's creation.

He didn't write Psycho Pass 2, and his involvement past the initial stages of A.Z is questionable. That said, I'm still not sure they ever needed to go past the initial TV series so I'm a little cautious anyway.

I don't think that anything could take away from the original series. No matter what comes out, nothing can change the original or take it away. Besides, the first series sets such an impossibly high standard I don't suspect any sequel could ever match it, nevermind surpass it.
