'New Police Story' in UK cimemas from October 13th

Sweet I didn't realise the DVD release date was so close, will be awaiting its arrival, can't wait to see Jackie Chan take on a more serious roll, but more than that I can't wait to see him fight...... oh and the out takes of the stunts going wrong, thats some of my fave bits of my other Chan films.

If all goes well should get this on Saturday (Monday at latest) with the Patlabor 2 - Collector's Edition.

I'll probably go off on one about what I thought of the film after I seen it, so for more non-important opinion preaching stay tuned!

Brilliant!

This was for the most part better than I expected it to be. This is easily the best Jackie Chan film for a very long time (for me it personally highlights how poor Chan's Amercian efforts really are). In fact, after the first Project-A film (from 1983 I believe), New Police Story is probably my favourite Chan movie.

Firstly, I like its mix of stunt sequences, martial arts and - not wishing to make it sound trivial which, in reality, it clearly is not - gunplay. A nice mix of action types, and all none very, very well indeed. The opening gun battle is like the shoot-out in the Michael Mann directed film Heat but much, much better! To be honest, I don't think one action set-piece can be seen as "below par" (I loved the martial art duel in the Lego store - wonderful stuff!).

Its also nice to see Jackie Chan take part in a slightly more serious role (despite the evident character clichè the character possesses). Still though, its a far darker and more serious film than almost all Jackie Chan's previous "efforts" (with the exception of the horribly underrated Crime Story) and for the most part it elevates this film way above the norm. It still has some light-hearted comedy in it though, and I found some if it quite funny, made the more effective because the film's darker tone.

There were some aspects that did niggle me though. The most obvious one was that I found the first half of the film or so superior and more interesting than the second (the latter half does walk the tight-rope of entering the usual Jackie Chan styled film-type).

The other niggle was very much an "individual" niggle, and that was to do with the way it appeared to brand video game and extreme sport enthusiasts (I am the former but not the latter) as people who's lives are so empty and meaningless that they will participate in acts of, as its called in Clockwork Orange, ultra violence. It gave the impression that video games were about nothing but mindless killing and death (and I concede that a high-percentage are, though many are not.). To someone like me, it annoyed me because I've always known its not a clear cut case. And it could be argued the very same people who like extreme sports and video games like Jackie Chan films.

But I'm probably way off the mark, but I couldn't help but shake the feeling that was the impression that was trying to be given.

Still, all-in-all this is one of my favourite Jackie Chan films and one of the best action films I've seen period. I also must stress that this was a very, very similar film to the French film District 13, and I implore anyone who likes New Police Story to see it (even those, rightly or wrongly, who are apathetic towards the French, abandon those prejudices just his once!).

McIcy, if you haven't seen it already you will love this film. :)

LEGO - Brilliant

Cheers for the full review Hovis! can't wait to watch it now, might rent it this weekend as the misses is away at her moms giving me the perfect opportunity to chill out with a beer, some takeway and a night of violent abandonment and Chan styled humour.

If the film is as good as you say it is I will be thorough enjoying it as I loved District 13 (your right about the french thing putting people off, but for me it didn't make one little bit of difference) inface I might rewatch that too this weekend :D

McIcy, you watched New Police Story yet and if so what did you think? Or are you having the same problems you had with Seven Swords and that being they don't have a rentable copy where you are at the moment? :)

Just watched it and loved it BRILLIANT a real achievement.

Fave Bits

LEGO FIGHT, the choreography was perfect really was the best fight scene in the whole film

SIDEKICK, a nice touch especially the twist of ho he really is I thought he'd be from special bureau not a fake altogether

Top bit for me - Escaping from Jail, that was laugh out loud, they cocked up the escape so badly and everyone just ignores them

Cheers for the recommendation Hovis! another quality movie

Watched it again myself a couple of nights ago and my favourite part this time was the part where his girlfriend had the motion bomb and after they thought it was a dud she stood up and another wire was connected being the actual trigger. I thought that was a real nice unexpected twist the first time and I still enjoyed seeing it the second (I actually forgot about it before I rewatched it :p).
