How something as awesome as the Eureka Seven series can become such a bad film I do not know...

same characters, completly different story

The characters may look the same, but they have completely different attitudes and beliefs. The only thing similar is how they look. Everything is different.

The same with the plot. Some scenes are re-used from the series, but make little sense in the new universe.
