New Anime Releases - 11/01/2015

I think both Manga and Anime Ltd have gone on record talking about how if you do want a cheaper option - there usually is one, ie. streaming services (the future) - Physical is increasingly becoming a market for collectors, and pricing often reflects that.

I agree with Rui that pricepoints for physical anime have to be considered based on the number of episodes you get. £30 per 13 episodes on BluRay (add £10 for fancy editions) is about right for me, and I always consider anything less than that to be a bargain. I remember being surprised last year that some people were complaining on Manga's twitter feed about the complete Psycho-Pass set being £40, they were obviously overlooking the fact it contained 22 episodes which however you look at it was a bargain.

Anyway, back on topic. Got the Arakawa single season sets. Giovanni BD will be picked up at some point. I dropped Dandy when it was streaming but I've heard enough about it since to convince me to give it a second go at some point.

Nothing for me this week,
Space Dandy - Already own the CE blu-ray
Arakawa - Already own both seasons (NISA versions)
Giovanni's Island - May get the blu-ray at some point

May pick up Arakawa Under The Bridge at a later date.

Will pick up Giovanni's Island, just not sure which version to get.

Already own the CE (Blu-ray) release of Space Dandy.

The only trouble with buying anime from FP is that it's always full RRP. Even HMV is usually cheaper.

Or sometimes more than full RRP

I might pick up Giovanni's Island at some point, I have a feeling HMV might do a special offer on it to make it cheaper than Amazon for a couple weeks

Got the Space Dandy CE.

Amazon still have dispatched Giovanni's Island UE yet...

It's a more global delay by a few days, found a wrong barcode on it and had to fix that for obvious reasons (didn't take long but meant a day or two later). Seemed pointless to push the official release date though and stock is in at Amazon now so should be off out by Thursday latest!

Sorry for that one!

To me 13 episodes for £28.75 is an amazing deal for such a fast release (and on BD too). I wonder whether the market will ever recover from the damage Manga UK's price slashing has done over the years.

Completely disagree. But then, you knew I'd say that. ;)

I'm going to hold out and see if a complete collection appears down the line at a keener price point. My viewpoint is that any more than £30 for a complete series is too much. So I'm certainly not going to pay close to that for a half season, unless I know the quality of the show or it's something I REALLY want (and as I get older and grumpier, there's surprisingly little that satisfies those criteria.)

No disrespect to Anime Limited or those who are champing at the bit to have this, but I've got to a point where I just can't play ball with the asking prices for most new releases.

Value is subjective at the end of the day - we set the SRP at a very wholly reasonable £39.99 for the standard edition of Season 1 (not out of order with what others set the SRP) and actually can lead to a £24.99 or £22.99 discount from retail. What price they set is at their discretion though so we have no say over if it's £22.99 or £28.75 :).

Nothing personal at all taken - but as much as I want to make everyone happy we know we can't always and I think combined with available (plus growing) digital options legit from us for shows this offers a middle ground for now. Always up for feedback though and we do try our best going forwards!

I think the sweet spot for me is about 10p per minute for my entertainment. That would make a single six episode volume of 20 minute episodes (or a film) £12, a twelve episode set £24 and a twenty four episode set £48. This was pretty much exactly what I would pay back in the days when single volume releases were a thing, and a lot of releases now (whether from Manga, MVM or AL) seem to be following the half season for around £20-£25. Which I'd be happy to pay, were I not now entirely broke.

Obviously special releases are worth more, but if I'm not that interested in the show I'm not going to shell out for one, and I think AL's model of special editions in addition to a more basic release (either simultaneously or down the line as per license stubbornness) is perfect. Everybody gets what they want, even if it takes a little while. But as Rui says that's much the same as anything else - take electronics for example. You can buy a next gen media player the day it comes out for £900 or wait a couple of years and pick one up for £50. And it doesn't even come in a nice collector's box with a hardback book of electronic diagrams and interviews with the engineers who created it.

This pretty much summarises our point of view too. I recognise consumer choice is an important thing and I don't believe you can force a market to spend more than is reasonable for a product.

What we do and it's nothing (at least as far as I know) to be ashamed of is we want to provide a Collector's Edition too and the price is as long as I've set them anyway to cover the added cost as opposed to gouging. These are all shows I've licensed because I actually care about the content so want people to see the most they can from them including extras :).

Where we can I like a standard edition to be hand-in-hand or the Collector's to be closer to sane prices if costs allow (Blood Lad for example is pretty sweet as a spot on quality / price). Either way - we're aware there are multiple markets for anime really and I'm especially not out to exclude anyone from enjoying them so release what we can as soon as rights allow :).

I still remember paying £12 for two episodes of Evangelion on Vhs.....

Didn't it go up to £13 for some of the later videos of Eva, and I recall some of the series I bought on VHS cost £14 :(

This is why I not so phased about a 13 episode series hitting the shelves for £30, it's massively cheaper, is released quicker and has extras (even if just clean OP/End) compared to what I used to buy.

I definitely paid up to £20 for some VHS releases (and a few were substantially more, like the rarer Anime Projects releases which barely anyone carried). And in the end I threw all of those tapes in the bin, including my Japanese imports - the price of which I prefer not to think about.

I'd be first in line to pay half as much for everything if it were possible, but ultimately anime costs what it costs because production isn't cheap and the western market isn't providing the limitless sales people originally hoped it would to ensure plenty went back to the creators and offset reverse importation. If we really want anime to be as cheap as major blockbuster titles, we either need to start some kind of major cultural revolution in the west or commit ourselves to a future of titles with the budget of Musashi Gundou :/

Tackling old threads I want to comment on ...

► ANIME LIMITED:
◄ Giovanni's Island UE/BD: I still don't know what to think of this one ... The reviews and trailer haven't convinced me yet.
And ... I haven't seen Grave of the Fireflies either, so it's not like anybody is doing something useful for me comparing it to that movie from almost 30 years ago.

◄ Space Dandy Season 1 BD: Still not convinced about Space Dandy either. Like lots seem to like it, even the English dub gets praise from sub-fans ...
But it still doesn't strike me as a must watch thing. The ED music is great though. So my comment from the CE release's week's thread stands.

► MVM ENTERTAINMENT:
◄ Arakawa - complete collection DVD: What about a Blu-ray re-release and then asking me again? ^_^; It's just offensive to ask me to pay for a subbed DVD.
I know Hanabee would need to do a Blu-ray with them ... But seriously ... DVD subtitles are awful .. Let alone the quality.

Disclaimer: due to college work and health issues I could not comment earlier, my sincere apologies to whoever is annoyed by me getting back to old topics.
