New Anime Newbie Needs Help!

Outside of anime I like Sci Fi and romance books and shows.
What follows is a useful list of the romance or romantic sci-fi anime titles I'd happily recommend, in no particular order:

Voices of a Distant Star
The Place Promised in our Early Days
5 Centimetres Per Second
She, the Ultimate Weapon*
Metropolis
Millennium Actress
SDF Macross
Chobits*
Elfen Lied*
Air*
Kanon*
Blue Gender
The Girl who Leapt through Time

*I deem these titles most worthy of the warning: "your mileage may vary". Of course, subjectivity dictates that the same could apply to anything, but in these cases it is especially relevant.

Mhm... Romance eh...

Legend of the Overfiend.

I know BlackWolf really enjoyed this particularly.

...I'm going to kill you :p

I would only recommend Legend of the Overfiend to someone who enjoyed watching rubbish

On a serious note i second Zin's recommendation of SDF Macross, it's one of the best at blending Sci Fi and romance, although if you can, watch Macross: Do You Remember Love? Its the movie version of the series and its the better of the two.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

watch all of season 1
watch episodes 1-3, 9-14 of season 2

believe me, you'll wanna give 4-8 of season 2 a miss

These shows mixes sci-fi twists and romance. You migth like them. I recommend the girl who leapt through time first, then voices and after that, those others in no particular order.

Millennium Actress is also really amazing, but not really a romance.

I thought the film's primary draw was the strife of the main character as she tries to track down the man who stole her heart. One could say it perhaps indicates an infatuation more than a genuine and reciprocal love affair, but romance fans will certainly find something they will enjoy more than other viewers.

I stand corrected. I had perfect blue in my mind when I wrote that.

Damn, too slow.

I agree with the other comments, if you want romance, look for Urotsukidoji: Legend of the overfiend. Make sure it's uncut because for some reason, a few scenes were cut here and there, nothing major but still important to the story. You know what the censors are like in the UK.

I guess a good place to start though would be Cowboy Bebop.

I'd say Haibane Renmei too, if you're a girl. Mainly because of the reaction from my partner but she's a bit of an anime vet herself so I dunno, I guess as others have mentioned, Ghost in the shell is a good place to start.

I know its only a joke but still :p You don't want the poor girl turning away from anime completely after watching that, assuming she takes the recommendations of Overfiend seriously

Haha, Matsumu is on point. The chicks dig Overfiend.

Seriously though, I seem to remember watching this early on in the relationship and it had no ill effect. Back then I would have classed my partner as a 'goody goody' girl.

It's one to go in with an open mind but I guess it depends on your age too. It's not all that great an anime but it's a nice introduction to the sordid side of anime.

Am I the only guy that got laid once thanks to Overfiend?

Okay i'll bite...How? Was it a choice between doing it or watching the movie?

To put it bluntly, it got her more in the mood.

Though in hindsight I was more the loser as she turned out to be a real nasty bossy type who thinks she is really important & gets offended if you have to fart when you are already on the other side of the room to her. She was five stone heavier than me too. AND she still owes me £200. :/ Glad I dumped her before she could leech any more of my money.

And she got dumped again earlier this year too! She hasn't learnt yet!

Back on the topic of Overfiend....

I think that beneath all the demon sex, the storyline is actually very good. Take away the sex & it would have been a good anime in its own right. :)

That's scary... I was talking to Ryo yesterday about what if someone actually slept with their partner while watching this?...

You are my living-imagination! *Eyes glisten*
