i introduced squid girl to mam today and it wasn't for her i could even tell without looking at her face and it was only the first episode, it didn't have a story to it and i said half way though the episode * if you dont like it at the end il choose something else* and she said * go get a few series and il choose* and so i did-

cowboy bepop * i wouldn't of thought she'd like this *
spice and wolf * it was a bad choice *

not that there bad or anything but my mum likes a good story and squid girl, spice and wolf, cowboy bepop isn't exactly good choices, i like these 3 but i guess it wouldn't be moms cup of tea -

but she chosen a few -

romeo X juliet
princess mononoke
owls moving castle
Towa no Quon
baccono
spirited away
the count of monte cristo

code geass
monster
fate/zero
serial experiments lain
baccano
eureka 7
mirai nikki

oh, and you should at least try gurren lagann, sure it is targeted more at a male demographic, but you never know, she may like it, i have female friends who loved it.

Fractale could be worth a try as that's a decent story, maybe Black Lagoon if she wants action or Wagnaria if she fancies some light comedy.

No I tried light comedy and she's not in to it; I tried squid girl and I reliesed that it wasnt her cup of tea, as for me I like squid girl because it's light hearted,

I think blackaggon might be a bit of a heart braker for her in some episodes

I got fractale but haven't seen it yet,

It's funny iv got loads of anime and possibly 20% of it might be what my mum likes, lol I need to find more good anime with good stories,

You should of heard her talk about how she was up set how FMA ended, she enjoyed it so much she didn't wanted it to end

Maybe:

noir
Madlax
Claymore
Gunslinger Girl 1&2
Ghost Hunt
Haibane Renmei
Last Exile
SE Lain
Witch Hunter Robin
Ghost In The Shell + GiTS:SAC 1&2 + SSS
Any of the Ghiblis as she liked a few already

I've gone for stuff with strong stories and little or no fan service, exception being GiTS which has some nudity and SAC1 in which the Major has a strange idea of suitable clothing. If this isn't an issue then maybe also:

Burst Angel
Corpse Princess

Haha, I went through this with my girlfriend too. I tend to find people just getting into anime, or who are watching it just to see what the fuss is abbout tend to do better starting mostly with movies. Long series can especially put peopleoff, but then you said she liked FMA (and I guess the girlfiend blitzed her way through Nana and that's about 50 episodes) so there are obviously exceptions.

I love Gankutsuou/Count of Monte Cristo :D

Tricky thing for me was finding nice realistic animes with nice stories that aren't set in high school. I relaly wanted to shake people's perceptions that anime was for kids and perverts but you have to wade through so much same old to get to the good bits...

@st_owly iv got that but never saw it since im STILL waiting for a full release that isn't going to happen.

@FourthLion thats the problem i got away with basilisk since the story required nudity & i wouldn't say it was fan service in basilisk, i love Gankutsuou/Count of Monte Cristo too i thought everything in it was brilliant, yeah you should of seen the look on her face when she watch anime for the first, she thought they was for kids before watching them, ( after watching death note, basilisk, moribito, FMA ) her reaction * WOW*

@Random il have to wait and see but GITS is a opinion,

I have a friend who likes anime with a wife who isn't that fussed on it and she enjoyed Summer Wars so that and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.. are options.

Also 5 Centimetres, The Place Promised and Journey to Agartha are safe bets although The Place Promised is a little abstract.

ahaha, I know what you mean, but I've pretty much given up hope on ever be able to achieve this. I think you've just got to kind of roll with it like "OK I know this was made with kids and/or perverts largely in mind, but that doesn't mean it can't still be great art!".

But trust me, you think your audience is hard, try watching some anime with my dad. Unfortunately he pretty much despises Japanese people and all things related to Japan due to somewhat understandable historical family reasons (to do with WW2), but I have actually tried to change his mind; I watched Samurai X Trust with him. I know he didn't enjoy it unfortunately, but to his credit he did sit through it all just to be kind to me. Maybe it's time to try again though, as in his older age his anti-Japan stance has softened considerably, though I think anime will always be too far for him.

he despises japanese people because of WW2, that happened years a go, does he not like germany and italy too. no offence but its kinda closed minded of him to despise 125.000.000 people, id understand despiseing the people who caused any suffering but to despise all of japan its kinda going a bit extreme,

My grandfather was still furious with Japan and Germany right up until he died and thought I was terrible for loving Japanese culture (and uh, studying German). People who lost loved ones (in his case, his kid sisters) to bombing are never going to be able to see the situation without it being coloured by their emotions. It's all terribly sad, but they did live through tons of propaganda and personal tragedies which aren't so obvious to our generation looking back on things with facts alone.

To answer the question, have you shown her 12 Kingdoms yet? She'd probably love that. Trying her on something like Fushigi Yuugi might work too (my mum liked it and she hates cartoons altogether!). Get Wolf Children too when it finally crawls onto BD over here.

Yeah, basically what Rui said. And I have to say, my dad doesn't actually (surprisingly enough) think I'm terrible for studying Japanese and even wanting to study it at university. Despite my apprehensions he never did offer one word of protest. He keeps his emotions and prejudices to himself for the most part. Though on one rather embarrassing occasion when I was a yougster, I do recall him having an argument with a Japanese woman... and he called her Godzilla...she also made the regrettable choice of actually saying "we Japanese never lose"...yeah I'm sure I don't need to spell out what choice of quip my dad retorted with. *sigh*

Anyway back on topic, I'd definitely go for Princess Mononoke. My mum liked it, she actually fell asleep for the last third of the movie, but she said she wished she had stayed awake for it, and I believe her

but its not right to hate, hate spreads more hate, its like with this generation we have a problem with muslim terroists, a while ago i hated muslims because,........... well you know what goes on 9/11, 7/7 bombings documentaries on undercover cams where they show them preaching hate towards non muslims and all those who goes against islam is evil, ect ect ect, AND for a while i hated muslims because of what iv seen, but after a while i learned that there are moderate muslims who goes * yeah im a muslim but i dont take it seriously * or im gay and a muslim * i have best friends who aren't muslim *im a muslim women and married to a jewish man* former muslims * ect and after seeing all this i felt bad about despiseing all muslims because its only a hand full who does wrong in the name of there faith but after that i decided never to group everyone that belongs to the same faith, culture, groups ect together again on what a few people have done.

its that same with others

if a person who is a gypsy hurts me i wouldn't hate all gypsys because of what 1 or 2 people did.
or
if a religious person hit me because i said something about evolution being true i wouldn't hate religious people.

its never the answer to hate never ever

no i haven't shown her 12 kingdoms yet il give wolf children a go when i get it

my dads grandad used to say a good german is a dead german so yeah its both a generation thing and closed mindedness , look at it this way, lets say you meet a german who was really nice, treated you nice, helped you out, ect ect and became friends, so it wasn't right for him to say that, yes i understand it was WW2 and we was at war but we shouldn't hate all germans, its was the basterds who agreed with hitler and those who wanted to go to war, also there was plenty of germans hiding jews and foreigns from the nazis in WW2 like i said its not right to hate all germans, hell there was germans who didn't want to fight
iv suggested that and were going to watch it, its in the pile to watch.

This is extremely interesting. My Granddad fought against the Japanese in Burma during WWII, and finished the war as a POW. He died well before I started studying Japanese, but this (ie. what would his opinion of my choice of degree be) is a topic that has come up in conversation before with my Dad and some other relatives. A few of them thought he would be OK with it, a few of them thought he wouldn't be too impressed. I was very close with him before he died, so I think he would have at least not been too outwardly disapproving, but I can imagine there being a large group of people who wouldn't be able to let it go.

It doesn't feel right tho.

Just to ask here who here as any Prejudice and/or Discrimination against a group of people,

I don't have any

What about you guys

I have a fairly large aversion to people who claim to have no prejudices and then look to start controversial conversations about other people's.
