Need help finding anime title

Hikikomori
I'm trying to find the title of an anime series I saw on Channel 4 in the UK in the 90's. It probably aired somewhere between 1994 - 1997. The series was a martial arts / fighting anime that seemed to run for quite a few episodes. From what I can remember the story follows a fairly straightforward path in the early episodes revolving around the main character and a companion as they fight against various enemies while travelling across a fairly barren wasteland. Then I seem to remember the story getting a little more complicated when they finally reach the ruins of a city, where I think one of the characters gets hit with a weapon or spell which makes him freeze in time (?) even though other characters can still move around him.

I know it's not much to go on but any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

Thanks. I did think of Fist of the North Star as a possibility, but I was checking out some clips on youtube and Fist of the North Star seems a little more hectic with way more characters than the anime I remember. I'm not 100% sure but in the anime I'm looking for I seem to remember that the main characters might have been accompanied by some kind of tank when they enter the city and the main character being hit by a yellow beam or weapon which froze him.

Are you sure it was Channel 4? I thought they only showed films back then. I think the BBC showed The Mysterious Cities of Gold - maybe that?

EDIT: I was just browsing and saw someone mention that "Legend of the Dragon Kings" aired late on Channel 4 in the '90s. That?

The Fist Of The North Star TV series did indeed get a late night airing on Channel 4. I remember staying up to watch it.

I also remember staying up even later to watch the video game show 'Bits' with Emily Boothe.

Rrrrrrgggle... Emily Boothe..! :p

I'm pretty sure it wasn't Mysterious Cities of Gold or 3x3 Eyes. I checked out the news pages from animejin but none of those seem right either. It's possible it was Fist of the North Star, I just wish I could see that scene again to confirm but unfortunately there are 152 episodes to get through.

I remember Bits too, back when Channel 4 were showing interesting late night programming.

My nights involved PSO-Bits-Cybernet-PSO lol, I remember Fist of the North Star being shown at some point on British terrestrial TV, but not sure what channel it was on, which probably explains why I never managed to watch it...

Don't know about freezing in time but here is wikipedia's description of episode 48,

Toki arrives at the village and interferes with Ken and Raoh's fight, revealing that Raoh was responsible for the death of their adoptive father Ryuken. Believing that Ken is not ready to fight Raoh, he paralyzes Ken and challenges Raoh himself.

Hope that helps.

Not trying to put a damper on things after mangaman's fine detective work, but I don't think channel 4 actually got that far through FotNS. They were definitely showing the dub, which I think runs out around episode 30-odd (end of part 2) and I wouldn't swear to them even having reached that point.

Edit: There's no chance we could be looking at two separate things here? The presence of a tank and the character getting hit with a yellow beam makes me think of Akira, which does have a similarly post-apocalyptic look to it and was shown on terrestrial tv around that time.

As I remember, I don't think they got very far at all. Maybe not even into double figures.

Ah, I'd love to track down the entire series sometime.

Wikipedia says that Manga Ent released up to episode 36

The first 36 episodes were licensed to Manga Entertainment and released in English dubbed and subtitled formats on VHS and DVD. Manga Entertainment initially released the series in eight VHS volumes spanning only 24 episodes in 1999 and later released all 36 episodes in five DVD volumes in 2003.[5] The English dub of the show features a new soundtrack provided by Reinforced Records and voice acting by Animaze. The original opening and ending sequences were replaced by in-house versions produced by Manga Entertainment with music by Mike Egan. The dubbed version aired on Showtime Beyond in the US and on Channel 4 and the Sci-Fi Channel in the UK.

It also says that the end of part 2 is episode 57 (but then Wikipedia is not always right about these things).

As for whether it is Akira - the original post said it was a series. If we are going to throw in movies how about Wind of Amnesia?

Definitely not Akira. I checked out episode 48 but that's not the one. Youtube seems to have all 152 episodes. I've been skimming through several of them and the general setting of the wasteland and ruined city seems to be right, so I'm guessing that Fist of the North Star is more likely. I'm almost certain it would have been a dub when it first aired on Channel 4 as has been said so I'll try skimming through the first couple of dozen episodes from the beginning.

I'm also going with fist of the north star over Legend of the four kings.

Though the OP stated that the clips he saw on youtube were a little hectic he might have been watching footage from the OVA film, and not the series.
