Nausicaä coming to Blu-ray in October!

I can't think why those variously branded region-free Chinese BD players like mine (which tend to retail for around £50-£60) keep disappearing from sale. I'd import ten-thousand of the things myself and sell them on the very fact that they are region free (which oddly neither HMV, Aldi or eBuyer made even a mention of in the short periods they stocked them).
 
Maybe cos they sell out faster than they can get them.

Not much good for me as I need a player with internal surround decoding, otherwise I would have got one.

Mentioned in this review for Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood from Madman Australia. Apparently Funimation's release is the same. Will be interesting to see if Manga does it as well, after all we are in a different Blu-ray region to Japan, and reverse importation may not be a bother in this case.

Before Optimum that was definitely not the case however - we got neutered releases from Buena Vista with extras missing and dubtitles.

I'm not sure what's going on with Funimation. Some of their releases (including FMA: Brotherhood and Ouran) are A & B, but a lot of them aren't. I'm hearing that Casshern Sins is region A only, which has thwarted my plan to import it. Sigh.

I assume it comes down to what rights they have - if they have rights in region B territories they do their masters A+B to save money later.
 
Hard subs? What. The. ****. Hey, at least it recreates that awesome feeling that you get from downloading movies recorded in Chinese cinemas!
 
Slight difference. Hard subs are burned into the print, player forced subs are generated by the player and can't be switched off. So they'll always be on for the Japanese audio, but always off for the English audio, and no amount of remote control button pressing will convince the player otherwise. ALthough some PC software players can get around that, on DVD at least.

I must admit that in the end it amounts to the same thing.

As Fabby says below, though, ideologically it is a repugnant move.
 
It's not as though I'd ever watch the Japanese track without the subtitles but, I dunno, something about it doesn't sit well with me. It's probably the anti-hardsub education I received from AnimeOnDVD all those years ago...
 
been toying with the Japanese release for a while now, but didnt want to fork out £40/50 for it. I'm glad Optimum have picked up the licence, and for everyone who is doubtful about the transfer i've had a sneak peak at the rip and its like watching a moving work of art.


(Yea Nausicaa is my fave Ghibli film <3)

I'd say the fact that hardsubs make it impossible to view the film in it's original form is pretty major. And the fact that they're only there as a means of discouraging reverse importation (aka: healthy competition) is equally galling.
 
You can view the film in it's original form by running the dub track. You just can't watch and listen to it in it's original form at the same time - but how many are going to watch it in Japanese without subtitles anyway? Yes it is annoying, but doesn't really make much difference at the end of the day.
 
Fine then, you cannot experience the film in it's original form. Better?

It's the friggin' anti-competitive market protectionism which annoys me the most anyway. If you want to live by the free market you have to be willing to die by the free market as well.
