Nadia

Since I'll soon have 10/11 of the Nadia DVDs (including the movie as the 11th), I'd like to read the views of the people on 'ere who've who've watched it, so feel free to bore me with a few paragraphs expressing the feelings of your heart (in a non-emo way, like).

From what I've read, it's a series of two halves. The 20 episodes are said to be great, but it's lots of people who say that also add that it goes anime shitter after the 20th episode. If this is the case, it's a shame when the series sounds so interesting; an adventure across the world set in 1880.

After reading Wiki, the reason for this is clear enough: After being surprised by the popularity of the series, the studio behind it (Gainax?) wanted it to be a 39 episode series and not the 26 episode series it was planned to be. This resulted in the director leaving the work to someone else whilst he sorted out a new finale, and the episodes the replacement director worked on are now classed as no more than poor filler episodes.

You've got it about right. The first 20-odd episodes are extremely awesome, but the third quarter of the show takes a dive in quality. (basically as soon as they're on an island, you know you're in trouble)

The last batch of episodes aren't too bad and the last couple are almost up to the original quality so it's worth sticking with.

The movie also has a pretty bad rep, so bad that I've been too scared to watch it even though I have it!

Ever since Anime World Order reviewed Nadia in their podcast, I've been very interested in it. The dub is meant to be decent, too, which is always a good thing. I just wish ADV would have released this awesome set over here :/

So, CG, your interest has nothing to do with Gainax also making Evangelion and ADV also releasing a near identical tin for Evangelion?

Since I was lucky enough to only a miss a volume from the 21-39 episode section, I'll get around to watching the first 20 episodes shortly (well, probably). I'll decide if its worth continuing beyond 20 after watching the first half of the series. I want to finish reading Death Note first as I'm not good at getting enjoyment out of stories when my attention is split 50/50.

I normally watch dubbed, but it's one of ADV's older works and the fake French accents meant I switched to sub pretty quick. Maybe I should've given it a better chance (like more than 3 minutes) as the quality generally rises with the episode count, but I didn't. :-P

I'd be surprised if a dub from 18 years is decent when most today are only passable. Not that it matters to me when I'm going to watch it in Japanese.

I suppose one plus for the Nadia dub is that dub watchers won't hear JYB's voice for the 100th time. Then again, maybe he got cast in just about every dub even when he was young?

The only reason Nadia has gotten any attention over here, and the central reason it's noteworthy is because Studio "They made Evangelion" Gainax is behind it. You wouldn't even know this series existed if it wasn't Hideaki Anno and Gainax that were behind it.
