most annoying anime character?

My gripe about Shinji is more the fact he grew as a character, then reverted back to is previous underdeveloped character. Anyway my most irrating characters are
Tenchi/ male lead from average harem anime. You've got a bevy of beauties lusting for you and a) you can't make a decision as to who you want b) even if you do you have to have to spend 6 months to pluck up the courage to hold hands....
Tsundere characters
Major Motoko Kusanagi from Stand Alone Complex. She just is too perfect, and too much of a know it all.

Agreed.

No annoying characters come to mind really, most of them just start off that way and then i get used to them... Sae from Peach Girl maybe. Oh jeez, there's nothing more annoying than a girl like that.

It's tempting but everyone says shinji.
Personally I think Shinji is one of the best anime characters because he has such noticeable human flaws. I only thought he came across as annoyingly whiney in the English dub of the series because Spike Spencer had this kind of goofy variation in his performance and his often unintentionally hilarious overacting.

It could be i tried watching it subbed but after so many years of listening to everyone over react it just doesn't seem right.
All be it he has the human flaws but it wasn't till the end of evangelion that i really found him annoying, whilst everyone is busy fighting or taking action he mopes in a corner.

It's strange, but when it's done right, unpleasant, despicable or gutless characters like Shinji can actually be really interesting to watch. It's why Gantz and NHK work so well. Perhaps everyone just loves a loser?

I don't think he exactly reverted back to his previous state of mind. The way he was previously was as a result of long term parental separation issues. Whereas in EoE it's as a result of his friends being killed (in one case by him), mind raped or moving away. I would have found it unrealistic if he hadn't reacted the way he did.

Yurie from Kamichu winds me right up, to the extent that I imagine myself slowly throttling her*. I simply cannot abide shy, whimpering, moe-bait. And she stole valuable screen time from the far superior Matsuri :-(

*violence is bad, mmmmkay?

Almost forgot to say mine.

That little girl from Black Jack. Pinoko I believe her name is. Comic relief need not be that frustrating and annoying.

Gotta say Im also a massive fan of Shinjis.
Me too, no Shinji-bashing from me, it was Asuka I really wanted to slap.

However, the characters I find particular irritating are:

Chi-Chi, in the Dragon Ball series, particularly Dragon Ball Z and GT. She seems to be wining and complaining in virtually evey scene she in which she appeared so that is almost becomes "Saiyan Beware!".

Rukia's 'brother' Byakuya Kuchiki from Bleach. He puts Rukia in a difficult situation when breaks the law, then he gets her into deeper trouble when he decides that he will keep the law from now on whatever the cost (and Rukia is the one that has pay the penalty). Not only does he not lift a finger to help but he acts superior and tells the people like Renji and her company captain to mind their own business when they are concerned about her.

(Outside of anime, and I mention this mainly to share my misery, I can still remember after many years being intensely irritated by Josephine and Constantia, the eponnymous "Daughters of the Late Colonel" in a short story by Katherine Mansfield which was part of an English Literature set text)
