sic vita est
Dandy Guy, in Space

This series has been promoted as a game with many possible outcomes where your choices matter (whereas art and film are largely not interactive mediums in this sense), with repeated interviews from senior staff reinforcing this. Plus it was painfully obvious, at least to anyone not working at Bioware, that the endings would get a poor reception: if only they'd held test-playings! However, in defence of Bioware, considering the whole game as an ending is one context in which the quotes linked above ring true.
The endings are not well written and there's poor in-game feedback as to how your choices have affected them... the ending was likely rushed or they ran out of budget. Ending aside though, a lot of choices are carried over from previous games and have major impacts for certain characters and the overall war effort.
Anyways: I did actually buy ME3 just over a week ago and haven't been here much because of the insane amount of time I've clocked up on it (like, 40+ hours). On reflection I think knowing the endings has actually improved my personal experience of it, adding a poignancy to the overheard conversations on the Citadel... and the rest of the game (I've been on the verge of tears several times, with a bit of suspense and laughter in there too). There are some personal tragedies to be overheard, such as the soldier struggling to get her child sent back to the safety of Thessia, finally succeeding... then later I'm watching that planet being devastated. Enjoying the journey so far.
What's struck me from YouTube videos, given that I'm doing a paragon playthrough, is how full-psychopath some of the renegade options are, much more so than the last games. Obvious spoiler if you've not been to the monastery yet, but this is an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpF184b9Tuo
