Manga's Double/Triple Disc Sets - Rate Them.

Excluding long running series like Bleach and Naruto.

I'm interested to see if you guys think the 26(ish, in some cases) episode series being sold in two volumes instead of three are any worse than the three volume series (or better). In other words, do you feel you're getting value for money when you buy three volumes of Claymore and two volumes of Ouran? Or, put a different way, do you feel you got a bargain when you paid £11.99 for Black Blood Brothers and ripped off when you pay £11.99 per volume for three volume releases?

(Note: Some of the two volume releases have £24.99 RRPs. The Ouran releases have a £19.99 RRP.)

In my opinion, the complete on release in the UK series are priced cheaper than the rest for a reason. (Jyu was worth a watch, though.) I'll be wary of them in the future. I also feel DtB has enough quality to be worthy of a three volume release instead of a two, though the quality level varies throughout.

I haven't watched Ouran. I'm too manly.

Five Volumes:

Death Note: 10/10

Three Volumes:

Claymore: 9/10
Darker than BLACK (?): 7-8/10 (so far - episode 18 or so)

Two volumes:

Ghost Hunt: 8/10
Negima!?: 6-7/10 (still early days; only watched four episodes)
xxxholic: 7-7.5/10 (watched first half)

Single Volumes / Complete Sets:

Black Blood Brothers: 5.5/10
Shigurui: 6/10 (so far - 7.5 episodes)
Jyu-Oh-Sei: 7/10

And once again, fascinating input by unellmay that manages to completely avoid talking about the topic... *rolls eyes*

As for the topic of Manga's multi-disc sets; I think they are fantastic value to be honest. Fair, fair, fair superior to anything that involves a single volume, 4 episode release as I actually feel I am getting value for money, and even when I end up buying a set and not enjoying it (xxxHolic S1V1), I don't feel i've wasted my money.

Claymore and DtB are sets I plan to pick up down the line, even though I haven't watched them before. They generally have been praised, so I don't mind taking the chance.

The only pain I have is that volume 4 of Death Note is a single disc release, and the price hasn't lowered to a suitable price for my liking yet.

I'm in the same position. I got vol. 1 for £5, vol. 2 for £8 and vol. 3 for £10. I haven't gotten vol. 4 because it's *still* selling for £10 - it being a single disc release, with 4 episodes, one of which being half recap.

Something strange has happened with all of the Death Note releases - the prices have all risen. Even vol. 1, which was once given away, is now selling for £12. And vol. 5 went up from £12 to £13 the other day. Normally, prices go down instead of up...

Hopefully, by the time the box set is released, the volumes will drop in price. If not, I'll have wasted my money when I could've just waited and got the box set.

I always wait for the box release, hopefully a thin pack, instead of getting individual volumes so this doesn't affect me so much

Errm I may be misunderstanding the question but are you saying that you would prefer a series being sold in fewer volumes, i.e. more episodes on one volume? I can see that could be useful price wise and do able when I see some volumes in a series have 5 episodes on and some have 3. However I'd be wondering if they have used increased compression to fit more episodes on a disk and therefore lowering the quality of the animation. If so it would only be visible on a very large TV maybe.

I guess because the box set is coming out its the last chance to get a little bit more money out of the individual volumes - I know that sounds cynical but from a business point of view it makes sense.

I'm going to just wait for the box set to come out - incidentally does anyone know if its limited edition or not?

It's not a waste of money if I know I like them ....yar
I continue to post regardless.....yes yes

agian what's sup with 13 eps on 2 disks?
(it's really 3 volume btw)

It's Manga, so no, it won't be a limited edition. It'll be produced in the millions and soon be selling for around fifteen quid like the GITS boxes.

The only one of these releases I own so far is Death Note, and I didn't mind paying £9 on release for volume four, given that all the other volumes were such good value for money. Manga have got it almost perfect from my point of view (if they included a collector's box with one volume it would be perfect)... If only it weren't for the fact that we're undergoing a format transition which means I'm now very wary of buying anything on DVD which may be released on blu-ray.

I'm loving Manga's approach. Of the ones listed I've bought and enjoyed the following:

Ouran - an absolute steal at 2 low priced volumes, but that's probably the only way to sell shoujo over here.
Jyu-Oh-Sei - fantastic for the price, but something I'd probably have felt more ripped off with had it been released as singles.
Ghost Hunt - I'd never have picked this up as singles and it turned out to be strangely compelling to watch. Not sure why (IIRC) it had a higher RRP since it doesn't really leap out on the shelf and get much attention.
xxxHolic - I usually hate CLAMP but thoroughly enjoyed this and felt almost bad for paying so little. I'm definitely up for the sequel(s) if they ever see a release.

I also bought Death Note. I felt annoyed by the one single volume but I bought all of this as it came out so clearly the release strategy was working. I'm amazed we got such a hot property on such a generous release strategy right away here.

I haven't bought the others (and have no plans to). As you can see the ones I've enjoyed are often the ones with the lower volume counts; this may because I have wonky taste or may be because they're less action-orientated than some of the others and a harder sell. Manga's double/triple packs are a good way to tip me over the edge and make me quickly purchase a series I might otherwise leave until a bargain edition came out. They hit the sweet spot between singles (good way to sample a series with a low entry price) and full series sets (low overall cost and less greedy with shelf space). They also stop me importing from R1 so long as they're announced quickly enough.

I felt like I got a good deal with Ouran. I'll let you know what I think of DTB when it arrives.
It's just a shame about the crap subtitles and lack of a signs subtitle track.

I find it really difficult to resist these manga releases, they're just great value for money.

Am I missing something or has no one (aside from myself) rated anything yet? I'm pretty sure I put "Rate Them" in the title. How odd...

Rate them? OK

Death Note 5/10
Black Blood Brothers 5/10
Jyu-Oh-Sei 6/10
Ouran 8/10

From what I've watched. Still good deals though.

If you like you can consider my list as 8-9/10 (since I bought and enjoyed them). I can't really rate the ones I have no interest in. They'd probably all be sub-5/10 to me.

From the ones I have seen:

Ouran 9/10
Jyu-Oh-Sei 8/10
xxHolic 9/10
Ghost Hunt 8/10
Death Note 7/10
