Manga University

auranna

Completely Average High School Student
Ok I’ll explain what's been happening to me.......I am very interested in manga and want to become a manga artist, I have develop my own style, that I am comfortable with, my teacher says that I have the best illustration skills in the class (whether he talking about my manga skills or general I don't know) and now I’m at stage where I want to go to uni and make a life for myself but so far I have hit rock bottom and that most universities don’t accept manga due to the fact that they think the Japanese are better then at manga then us....which I can understand it is it's origin...but still don't accept it, there are some reason that they think manga is very ugly or tacky, other reasons that they can’t teach manga. I don’t want them to teach me manga I’ve learnt that my self, I just want a university that just accept it and won’t be bias towards it. If anyone knows any universities that accept please tell me which one is it because I don’t want to change my beautiful style all over again. Thank you.

If all you take in your uni interviews is manga related stuff I can see where they're coming from. They are looking for applicants who are interested in and can showcase a wide variety of ideas from different areas. I can't really say much else except that Manga is mainly used as a word that means that a comic has been translated from Japanese to english and as I said in another topic, manga just means 'comic' japan. So it's best to present yourself as being interested in the illustration field rather than as a 'manga artist'. To get the universities interested in you need a varied portfolio and it helps if you know a bit about art theory as well.

In short I very much doubt they turned you away purely based on the the fact that you enjoy comics/manga. Maybe they felt your style lacked in originality or maybe your portfolio just wasnt up to scratch and rather closed minded in a sense. Since I haven't actually seen your portfolio I can't really tell.

grr... your right...i hate it when someone is right. i guess it is helpful advise...i got months to improve things. thanks

Gutted to hear your having trouble mate.
My friend who does art at university nearly failed her first year because one of her portfolios was manga based and they didn't class it 'art'
What a load of bollox, so much rubbish is put in to the art bracket, just look at tate modern for christ sake and they have the nerve not to appreciate her work, which is just as good as any manga i've seen to be honest.
Its so unfair.

You'll be extremely lucky to find a university that teaches manga, auranna, in fact, I doubt there is anywhere outside of Japan. With that said, it's odd they'd turn you down simply because you draw in the manga style. Like Sy said, maybe you need to diversify your techniques a little bit and show that you can lend your hand to a number of different subjects. After all, every degree at university is filled with modules you may not be interested in - hell, I studied "Internet Technology" and I ended up doing things like Advanced Maths (nightmare), I'm sure some universities offer modules on comic art though.
