Antara News reports on the growing popularity of manga in the UK: "Nielsen BookScan shows sales of graphic novels and manga have shot up from just over 100,000 units ($2.8 million) in 2001 to nearly 600,000 units ($10.3 million) in 2005.

THe only way is up :D

I'll buy Gollancz Yu-Gi-Oh, Dragonball and One Piece, but that's all, don't like the looks of the others, but I'm still there helping... somewhere.

I've been buying Case Closed and Maison Ikkoku, I'm planning on catching up on Kenshin and Flame of Recca seeing as the earlier volumes of the USA ones are hard to find.

Alot of that help is from UK bookstores selling Manga as standard lately. Ottakar's for example, every branch has a fairly decent Manga selection.

Thankgod places like Borders bookstores are now stocking anime/manga, makes it a lot lot easier to get hold of rather than scouring internet sites and guess which titles you wanna read, much better to be able to flick through a manga in store and see what its like before you buy it

The Norwich Ottakars has a huge section. They also hold the Manga evenings which have to help ^_^
Borders has an even bigger section ^_^
One of the reasons i'm greatful for living in Norfolk =3
I've been buying Fushigi Yuugi and Rurouni Kenshin. The others dont really intrest me much =x

Of the Gollancz stuff, I am mostly interested in Maison Ikkoku but might stick with the anime instead. The other series are a bit long for my tastes.

Tokyopop I am really still an import guy. Delay between US & UK titles is a bit much.

However all my new Del Rey series will be local. Air Gear, Basilisk, The Wallflower and possibly Guru Guru Pon-chan and have committed to release synching with the US.

In fact, didn't Del Rey license Mushishi too?

the price for the uk Del Ray (Tanoshimi) manga books are more expensive! they are like £6 (shop price) but the net will always be a bit cheaper.

i was suprised but looking at the release dates for the UK Negima! they are releaseing like 3 or 2 a month!. thats fast, and will catch up to the US version in no time. (a great manga i must add!)

I have to say when I was in Waterstones the other day I had a look at the manga section and was pleasantly surprised at the variety on offer (sure! I know its nothing compared to North America but disregarding that comparison it was more impressive than ten years ago in the UK! :-D ).

Thought I'd share that.

The manga selection in the Milton Keynes Ottakars isn't bad, a good selection of different titles, but no fantastic. Where they do excel though is in ordering things in - you can go into the shop an ask, or order it through on their website, last time I checked, free of charge.

I know this is the same as all books, but it's still pretty good for us Manga fans.

It's a real shame that Amazon take £2.50 for shipping of each individual book - because their are some really good deals on the market place, and I'd buy alot more if they charged a sensible amount!

i doubt its amazon charging the shipping rates on the marketplace products. its the seller who puts the price for the item and delivery.
lol if £2.50 is the case then you might as well buy it straight from amazon. buy like 3 or 4 books, then select the sweet free delivery! (sure it takes an extra day or two, but it saves you money my friend.
(i do it all the time :) )

I think it's a shame for manga publishers in the UK, they usually start on a series a good few volumes after America, and imported titles are so easy to get ahold of. You just need to go to forbidden planet or onto Amazon.co.uk. Most people will be far into a series before it gets released in the UK, and they probably wouldn't notice they'd picked up a UK version if they ever did. The versions look exactly the same, apart from a logo on the spine. Plus there's no such thing as region locking on manga (obviously). So British manga publishers are at a big disadvantage.

The best place i found was this place. It's about as cheap as amazon, and everything is free delivery!

Yeah, I love that site. I use it a lot.

I've found the printing quality of most of the Gollancz books to be, quite frankly, ****.

Pages seem to go from super-dark to super-pale, to just sometimes
unreadable.

I'd much rather pay more for an import, and be much farther ahead while I'm at it.

I Loved the fact that about 2 years ago Waterstones stopped selling manga altogether. Then about 1 year later thay slowly bring it back it to there shops once the boom hit.

I generally go to Borders its round the corner. But if i'm looking for some specific i go to Forbidden Planet London. Which has a MASSIVE manga section. But then Amazon sells manga at £4.19 which is cheap. Ow now i don't know where to shop.

but anyway. I Think Tokyo Pop helped bring manga to britain as they have alot of titles and realesed tham all in the UK. As they treat it as a hobby rather than a business
