Manga artist rips into modern fandom

She is a well known manga artist by all accounts but not in the West. We primarily get the shoujo and shounen (girls' and boys') titles in the west whereas she started by writing Yaoi hentai manga for women. Manga for adults is very thin on the ground in the west but is quite popular in Japan.

(I've been following the responses to this story over on Anime News Network for a while and that is based upon what was written there.)

Yaoi hentai manga is really popular in the west too. It was a massive growth genre in north america and its on its way here too over the summer.

The simple thing is that a 'well known' artist should have produced identifiable work that they are credited with. Famous for 'title1, title2' etc.

She is probably known within the niche yaoi genre in japan, but few (in japan) would know her outside of that fanbase. Otherwise they would have quoted her works.

Basically its shoddy journalism. They probably interviewed a whole load of artists on the subject, but Mimei's rant made for good copy.

Depending on who you ask, Moe means a lot of things

Derived from the japanese word, it describes a gushing feeling associated with seeing something nice/cute in anime, and any anime that induces that feeling can be called Moe anime. In this context it is harmless

Another meaning is that it idealises a female quality associated with girls on the cusp of adulthood - they retain youthful innocence, naivete, energy and enthusiasm but are becoming budding or blossoming young women. There is an alluring or sexual aspect to this (IIRC japanese age of consent is lower).

There is the usual trash meaning to this, that it is commercialised child porn.

Oh. ^^; Well I think that manga-artist is wrong for criticizing Otakus.
