Macross? Robotech? I need guidance!

Right, i've seen Macross Plus, and that's it. Recently, i saw the release of the Robotech series in its swanky new packaging in HMV and i was tempted, but... am i right in thinking that Robotech is a re-hash of no less that three seperate and unrelated series?! (one of which, i understand, is one of the Macross series) is Robotech worth me getting and, if so, what exactly is it? Or should i start hunting down the originals?
I really enjoyed the world created in Macross Plus and am eager to see more, no matter which version of which series i end up watching!

You can import the original Macross anime series from the US (ADV are currently releasing it for the first time on Western DVD), though I doubt it will ever come out in the UK. Other than Macross Plus, the rest of the franchise appears to be tied up in legal red tape- the latest series Macross Zero is another OVA series similiar to Plus in that it has state of the art animation, but it still isn't released outside of Japan. For shame.

You are right in thinking that Robotech is three seperate anime series clumped together; though I haven't seen it, Manga UK have released all of the Macross saga over here now and we have posted reviews for all of these volumes- check them out! :)

No Macross is the original japanese show that Robotech used parts of.

see what happens if u use wikipedia :(

damn lieing gits

I enjoyed the 28 episodes of Robotech (Macross Saga) that I watched so far - but if you are looking for the 'real deal' then I suggest you import the ADV R1 version of Macross. It has dual audio as well so I was thinking of buying and comparing it to Robotech. I have a suspicion the ADV VA's won't be as good though.. cheese ftw!
The first 36 episodes of Robotech is the Macross part, but in episode 28 onwards I think they are starting to splice it with another story to keep it going as if it wasn't a different series.
I recommend Robotech for those who don't mind dubs as it's easily available here and some people will view it with nostalgia but for the purist - go for ADV Macross. Either way, it's a good story. :D

I am watching the original Macross at the moment.
On episode 28.

I am very muh enjoying it, especilly as I am playing two of the arcade games aswell.

Here's one I prepared earlier.

Robotech is well worth watching, but for the real deal import Macross from the States or try to find Do Yo Remember Love. I remain hopeful that ADV will bring the original series over, but it's not looking too likely at the moment.

What's the status of DYRL? at the moment? I saw some 'unofficial' sources but they seemed to be defunct so I assumed it had been licenced. Unfortunately there was no definite news one way or the other as far as I could tell.

As far as I know, it's still unlicensed. ADV may already have it and are just taking their time with the restoration and dub; it's likely to be one job they want to get right. If they don't yet have it, they're likely in the middle of an intense bidding war for licensing rights. Hopefully we'll know more details soon enough.

You just reminded me how much I want them to stop arguing and just release Macross Zero. Sure the storyline was kind of... out there, but the combat sequences were incredible.

IIRC DYRL was licensed way back when Robotech was popular, highly edited and possibly even shown in theatres in the US, and called a Robotech 'movie'. Harmony Gold were doing a lot of this - for instance Megazone got released in an edited format as another Robotech movie. There was also a few best-forgotton ones too.

It was licensed way back in the 80's by Kiseki, and got a uncut, subbed release on VHS here in the UK. The US got two versions, an edited one called Clash of the Bionoids, and an unedited one called Space Fortess Macross. You'd be hard-pressed to find any copies these days, but there's always eBay. I don't think DYRL was ever released as a Robotech movie, but Megazone 23 certainly was going to be - until it bombed in a test run and was buried. It did make it in countries like Argentina though, so there may still be copies floating about somewhere.

Having read into the subject a little of late, i'm still wondering why they didn't adapt Super Dimension Century Orguss into it. From a story point of view it is rather different, but you'd assume getting all three parts from one company would give you a discount :p

(plus i just want to see Orguss!)

I've just finished watching all 85 episodes of Robotech. Of course it's the extremely cheesy Harmony Gold version, but the dubbing is actually pretty good.
The first season (The Macross Saga) is really entertaining and should appeal to the romantics out there. Season 2 (The Robotech Masters) is uber boring and I was only able to stomach it thinking I needed to know what happens to finish the series, but honestly the characters were awful! The third season (The New Generation) was the best of the 3 and quite honestly you could watch it as a stand alone, as there's only a little reference to the previous 2 arcs.
