i get really happy wen sumfin cums on film 4 but they cant really compare to better animes with seasons

yet more Ghibli! I wish they would broadcast other things as well. Having said that I will be watching as I haven't seen it yet - thanks for the tip!

Watch out PartiallyMetalAlchemist, this place is full of Grammar Gestapo these days... >_>

Anyone who hasn't seen it should watch Only Yesterday though. It's a slow, contemplative film (which due to it's reminiscing is probably far more appealing to those of us the wrong side of 20) with a believable, restrained and not even remotely soppy romance. But the end is still so moving it makes me well up every time.

I know I'm a newbie here, but would it be good to have a thread discussing what anime is being shown on TV because I can't find that anywhere :(

When anime is on TV someone generally posts it up, but it doesn't really warrant it's own thread because there's so little actually shown...

Wow, you're the one who wrote that?

IMO, there's a 2 hour slot when nothing good is on because the channels expect people to watch the reality shows that are on. Why couldn't other channels fill that slot with anime?

year i did, i just graduated in postgrad journalism- looking for a journalism job now actually. i occaisonaly write for the guardian, though not often and ive taken a break from work the last two months

thks
sadly the chance of merging journalism with maga/anime luv is slim

I find it utterly shocking that an article on trying to get anime on UK TV failed to interview either Mark Buchanan of Anime Central, which ran for a year on cable, digital and satellite ending last year, or myself as director/co-producer and co-writer of Anime Network, the first dedicated anime block on UK digital/satellite using the US brand of The Anime Network, which only lasted six months. Much of his article is speculation, and, all due respect to both Jonathan Clements and Emily Man, both exceptional in their field, both Mark and I could have given chapter and verse on why both our ventures failed to make a mark on the UK TV world.

There are some serious reasons why anime on TV is all but forced to fail in this country, which have nothing to do with the perception of the wider UK public, and everything to do with how television works in Britain and the kind of people in television. Unfortunately, this article fails completely to address this, as the writer clearly failed to do any more research than a phone call and dropping by the only dedicated manga bookshop in town. I expected so much better from the Guardian for shame.

An article about Anime on TV that didn't bother to talk to anyone involved....

nb every article i write gets -ve comments, part of the job

mostly its time, word limits and deadlines thats prevents wider interviews with more subjects

I don't class that as a negative comment. Especially as it came from the former head of ADV UK and one of the people behind TAN:UK. Someone who knows an awful lot about anime.

As usual, the journalist didn't bother speaking to anyone involved in the distribution of anime in the UK! I wish he had, so we can set the record straight. Manga has been trying to get its anime programs like Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex, Naruto, Bleach and Death Note onto satelittle, digital and terrestrial TV for years with no luck (apart from Anime Central, which dies a quick death). We can't even give the stuff away for free!

The more people that see the shows on TV, the greater the chance we'll sell more DVDs, which is our core business. I can't even get Film Four to premier Ghost In The Shell Innocence for crying out loud! And even when Film Four ran it's Studio Ghibli retrospective the viewing figures were disappointingly low.

The other main reason TV Programers shy away from anime is that our core audience (males aged 13-18 years old) has migrated en-mass away from television to new media. This very hard to reach demographic is more at home online, gaming or pursuing other interests away from the idiot box. That's why Manga has started streaming its shows online for free or download to own on iTUNES and download to rent on Xbox Live market place. You can actually watch the first 4 episodes of GURREN LAGAN for free at www.manga.co.uk now. Another 4 episodes will air in a fortnight's time. We'll also be screening Afro Samurai and Afro Samurai Resurrection in the coming weeks as well as Robotech. We're also launching Fullmetal Alchemist on our own site by Summer's end. We will catch up with the first 15 episodes and then show one new episode every week following the Japanese broadcast.

A comment from the head of Manga UK.

There was some talk about doing one which was tv/free legal online streaming in this topic: http://forums.animeuknews.net/viewtopic.php?t=11216

But no one has so far stood up take on the job to do it.

I myself have had ago recently to create a topic, I manage to do a listing of all the links to free online anime streams but for the life of me can't think of a good way to do a guide for Tv.

Here what I got for free legal online streaming:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Free Legal Anime Streams:

Here a list of all the sites which offer free and perfectly legal streams of anime online which are accessible for people in the UK. There will be a lot cases where certain shows will not be available to the UK or require membership in certain cases. But all the sites below will have at least some Anime content available for the UK. I am not going to list all shows which are available as it would mean contently update for new shows and removal of shows. Just explore for yourself and enjoy :)

Anime News Network

Anime Network

Crunchyroll

Joost UK

Funimation Youtube Channel

Anime Network Youtube Channel

Bandai Entertainment Youtube Channel

With all due repect to both, but where were they not able to come out on their own websites, and forums to give us the low down "chapter and verse on why both our ventures failed to make a mark on the UK TV world."? It's not like they weren't asked, begged, lamented at loudly to do just that in their forums that they obviously never read, or ignored. So for them to come all hurt and insulted like for "not being interviewed" comes as a bit rich and disingenuous. They get no sympathy from me because of their own self impossed gagging order, which tells me the only true reason for the failures was the glaring lack of investment and organisation, and they couldn't face the fans for their own shame of it. The fans expected just as much from them. :x

Obviously not as much as he should. I fear he is talking his chosen field down unnecessarily. In other words the fruit in an apple is not in the core. If that is the demography he is hawking his titles at the TV programmers for, it's no wonder he is failing. My 13-18 year-olds still watch anime on the tele and did when it was broadcast on any of the channels that had shown it, and would still even though they have other media to distract them, and one of them is female. Cause and effect. If there is no anime on the tele then they will naturally go to where there is. like on the internet, or DVD, etc. Maybe the target has moved? But how many Manga titles were ever produced for that target audience? I would say that the majority of their titles are for 13 and up to 113. Isn't it funny that I'm a 57 year old anime fan that is not in the target? I feel so........endangered, and rejected. As for Manga's "free Streaming", I've yet to get that to work for me.

Back on topic, and Only Yesterday is a "slice of life" genre about a twenties something woman torn between a career in the big city, or a life in the country working on a flower farm. She is under pressure by her family to get married and settle down, but there is only 24hours in a day and that doesn't allow for much socialising in the city. In her holiday time traveling to her cousins farm in the country to help with the harvest, she starts reminiscing about a boy she knew whilst in primary school, and the story jogs back and forth in time. The plot is slow and gentle and really it is one of, if not the most adult orientated movie that Ghibli has put out to date. But I will confess that this title is so far the only subbed movie that had me in a right blubbering mess of joy at the end. Even writting about it now is making my eyes water. 10/10 :)

Did anyone watch Metropolis? I did not notice until late that it was really on at 2.45 - it is 1.45 after you put the clocks back (for anyone recording it, you may have messed up)

I have noticed another showing for Only Yesterday on Radio Times,

Tuesday 03 November 2:25pm Film4

I work 9-5 Mon-Fri so I will miss both showings of Only Yesterday :(

I have seen it before though. It is a good film.
