I really wish companies would be more proactive in getting their Anime onto TV, the shows that were aired on Sci-Fi many years ago were the first purchases I made on DVD, similarly Anime Network and Anime Central both influenced my buying habits.

Would big US shows such as Lost and Heroes have sold half as many DVD's if they weren't aired on TV first?
You make it sound so simple. Just get it on TV. The anime companies have tried and tried for years with little-to-no success. There just isn't a perceived interest in anime for TV companies to bite and take a chance on it. Licences are another factor where the UK distributors buy distribution licences rather than broadcast rights. Given the current climate where getting anime on TV is extremely difficult it makes perfect sense to do so. What is really required is a concerted effort from the source (the Japanese owners) to sell shows to the UK as happened with Naruto and even then I can't see it being more than a trickle if anythin comes of it at all.

I've always imagined that situation as being the CEO from a big distributor (like ADV) sitting on his massive throne while an exec from a small channel such as Rapture TV approaches with trepidation;

ADV CEO: Yes, puny human?

TV exec: Please sir, might I have an Anime...?

ADV CEO: Hmm, what's in it for me?

TV exec: Err, *gets down on his knees* I'll k-kiss your feet.

ADV CEO: Very well. You may have Wolfs Rain.

TV exec: P-please sir, may I have some more?

ADV CEO: Down on your knees again...

I could be wrong though.

Between July 31 and September 7 (or while supplies last), people who order a medium-sized pizza will get a pizza box with a Sky Crawlers design created by the film's character designer Tetsuya Nishio. Ten Pizza Hut Club email subscribers will receive a special pen with a "floating" fighter image inside. Among those who order their pizzas online, 15 people will win recording scripts, staff jumper jackets, tumblers, Pinky:st. figures, fighter models, deformed plush fighter dolls, and The Sky Crawlers Wii game. Some of the items will be signed by Oshii or Nishio. The campaign will also offer free computer and phone wallpaper.

The movie opens in Japan this Saturday. Pizza Hut has tied its campaigns with Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, Maria-sama ga Miteru, Evangelion, and Macross Frontier in the past

Yeah, you are. Wolf's Rain is Beez's, not ADV! ;)

shame they lose all the advertising once it gets dubbed though

Yeah, you are. Wolf's Rain is Beez's, not ADV!

I've always been curious though, DO distributors actually attempt to get their wares put on TV, or do they just hang back and wait for a channel to approach them?

This might be a question to Andrew... I don't think it's easy to get the shows on TV, as I don't think the licenses gives them absolute control over the show in a country. In other words, you might need one for releasing in DVD an another for airing it...

I've heard that is the case as well but i'm not 100%

From what I've read from what a few distributors have said in interviews, they have in the past solicited the Terrestrials to get a title transmitted, and sometime they were successful, but mostly not. It's about 50/50. Channel 4 may have contacted Optimum Releasing, or Asia, about the Ghibli titles it has been showing from time to time, but it could just as well been the other way round. I recently had an e-mail reply from a TV studio exec. (whom shall remain nameless  ) when I asked about getting anime on one of their channels. the reply was:
Concerning the on-air channels, as you know, anime mainly comes through independent distributors and we have to decide carefully what to buy with our non-studio budget - we look at titles that have had substantial cinema releases, have played at major festivals / picked up awards so they will have had some publicity before coming to the channel.
Meaning, it has to have been popular, or have a bit of a buzz before hand, before they will take the risk with a title, I presume, which is fair enough. I'd want a title to be successful for my company as well if I were in their position. Afterall anime broadcast licence fees aren't cheap for the audience gained, and there lays the rub.
As for the article, this looks more like a fansubber who also happens to be studying law, managing to get his rant published.

i think with Ghibli it's usually the case of

Ghibli: "how would you like some reasonably priced anime to show?"

*mumble mumble*

Ghibli: "it's done by Disney"

BTW, if anyone cares True Entertainment will replace Anime Central on Wednesday, with GITS and Bebop being relegated to a 12am to 3am timeslot and Pop Girl/True Movies programming comprising the rest of the schedule.

Well no worries, I'm sure another Anime channel will launch in this country REAL soon...

There are plans to launch Bandai channel over here but that is not a TV channel but an internet streaming media channel.
