Not wanting to looooseeeeee our way – we submitted plans for Kill la Kill plenty of time in advance along with designs. We’re very pleased to say they’ve now been signed off on so we can confirm what we’re doing and we’re pretty excited as we’re doing it differently to the rest of the world outside of Japan :).

So without further ado here is an in-depth specification:

WHAT’S INSIDE THE BOX? WHERE’S THE BBFC LOGO?

Packaging + Physical information:

– Obi-wrap around the box (the red piece you see – all BBFC info will be on that and the spine of the rigid case)
– Clean rigid box using similar artwork to the US but with UV spot gloss on characters so they’ll stand out.
– 2-disc tray digipack (1 tray per side ala Bebop)
– Art card certifying the number your release is out of.
– 188 page Keyart & Storyboard book, same size as case replicated 100% from the Japanese booklet in their Part 1.

What’s on the discs?

– Episodes 1-9 complete with previews at the end of each video
– Clean opening sequence
– Clean closing sequence

Audio on disc:

– English dub – 2.0 track
– Japanese audio – 2.0 track

Subtitles:

– English subtitles
– English signs track in dub

The only difference between editions is one has Blu-Ray (£59.99 SRP) and one has DVD (£49.99 SRP)

WHY £59.99 / £49.99? ISN’T 3 PARTS A BIT TOO MUCH EVEN IF A COLLECTOR’S EDITION?

This one’s simple and we’ve had a lot of queries already and I want to make sure it’s absolutely clear about this one! This isn’t just one licensor but the industry is pushing to protect the Japanese market over the last few months especially and right now that involves:

1. Cancelling cheap editions Day 1

2. Expanding the number of volumes (4 parts for Sword Art Online for example)

3. Just holding back significantly vs release dates

4. Holding certain extras back to protect value of Blu-Ray

So how did it get to this stage then, what are the benefits of the UK version?

We’re trying to find another way that benefits you guys and since we’re Region B, are a less tasty option for Japanese counter importation – we’ve tried to find some compromises. For us that meant 2 parts for Kill la Kill wasn’t an option really and instead we did the following:

i. Negotiated three parts instead of 5, allowing us to produce collector’s packaging.

ii. Negotiated a release date not so long after the second part of the US release.

iii. Managed to set a price point that while higher than a usual product, still gets you the best quality at the best price in current markets.

Case in point for Blu-Ray especially (using today’s exchange rates):

In the Japan it’s £45.59 for premium BD x 9 sets = £410.31
In the USA it’s £37.26 x 5 sets for the premium edition = £186.30 | £24.83 x 5 sets for the standard BD = £124.15
In the UK it’s £43.25 x 3 sets = £129.75

So currently, for a whole £5 more than the standard edition in the USA (not factoring customs charges + shipping in, which is of course free on most good UK retail sites) you are getting deluxe packaging, content not released outside of Japan and is being made available over fewer sets.

Instead of funnelling that money into profit too – we re-invested it into the packaging as the kind of booklet we’re doing certainly isn’t cheap either!

WHY NO STANDARD EDITION FOR NOW?

We actually looked at this and realistically if you have to pay £29.99 (the lowest conceivable we could charge vs the US even then it could not pass approval) you’d be paying between £59.97 and £74.97 to own the show after retail discount!

The result was we made a tough decision to try and make it available digitally as fast we can first – Netflix and Wakanim being key partners for this and we hope that makes the show watchable at the very least right now as we look at getting it up on other platforms too. We’ve not forgotten folks do want just a standard half season set or complete series in standard Amaray packaging and we do want to deliver that!

Realistically you are looking at end of 2015 though before we can do this – which isn’t actually so far after where releases used to be in the industry, although that doesn’t make it feel any better!

As soon as we can do this in a way that actually delivers value for that group of fans then we will – but there’s no point in doing it in a way that just alienates you guys further. It’s not our intention and of course we hope folks understand the logic.

WHAT HAVE YOU GOT PLANNED FOR PARTS 2 & 3?

We’ll update soon but you’re looking at books from the Japanese release per Part and ideally with the final part a box to store the whole series in depending on what assets we can clear as we want to do something incredible for you guys! More details as they come though :). Open to suggestions as always though!

Re: The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

Looks and sounds great to me. Got my order in at 44 quid. Pricey but I'm willing to bite the bullet and support all the anime.

edit - actually 39 quid :)

When you consider the US collectors edition clocks in at £45 on UP1USA for 4 episodes, I think we are doing ok

Re: The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

Clearly but when you compare it to the prices in the uk market, pricey is a justified term, especially for those fans used to buying half seasons for 20 quid or there abouts.

I've had this preordered since day 1 so it's not really a factor for me (blind buy as well) but a look at the amazon reviews (unless deleted) shows what your average fan thinks.

Indeed. Though I was hoping Andrew would find a way to include the first OST with Part 2 but it looks like the main physical extra is going to be booklets only for all three parts. Not a major issue but at least the 3 Part plan was approved.

Strange to see it's 9 episodes instead of 8. I was kind of expecting them to use the Aniplex discs (and region lock them) which had 01-04 on disc 1 and 05-09 on disc 2.

Re: The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

Seems totally sound to me. In the case of Kill la Kill I'm totally happy to wait for the standard BD next year. If I want to watch it before then, it's on Netflix.

Re: The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

I noticed that their blog post seemed very much on the defensive in regards to what Japan is and isn't letting them do. I'm guessing the majority of this is so that people reading it don't think they were deliberate choices by Anime Limited (such as releasing 3 volumes instead of the standard of 2 set by FUNimation and Manga UK), but I wonder how much of it is venting stress too? I mean, from the sounds of it, working in the foreign anime distribution industry sounds a stressful job at times xD.

Re: The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

I imagine it must be a nightmare. They probably have to wait like a week or two for a confirmation/reply even if they just change one little tiny thing on the visual designs.

Re: The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

Kill la Kill is looking good. Unless AL has some sort of sweet pre-order bonus exclusive to their site, I'll keep my Amazon pre-order as it's at £39.91.

Guess you got an order in earlier on?

Base.com has it for £42.99, just sent Amazon a price check on that, we'll see if it shifts at all.

Yep, as soon as it appeared on Amazon. Although I think it was a little more, but dropped for a very short period and then went back up. That's why I normally order from Amazon, their pre-order price promise, plus the added bonus that I don't have to keep a check on the price.

The week before the release I normal check to see if my Amazon order is the cheapest.

I tend to do that aswell, locked in my Guren Lagann set for a great price that way, guess I was a bit slow deciding if I should order or not

The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

God Bless the Amazon price lock in. If it wasn't for that, I think we'd have all moved to Base or Zavvi by now.

But yeah, my usual method is just pre-order as soon as titles go live, just in case. Then I can always back out later if I change my mind.

Just wanted to say - I'm really both proud and impressed by this reaction :). I forgot to point out to folks that also chronologically the show finished in March and in under a year we're releasing it. For Psycho Pass as an example - it finished broadcast in March 2013 and took a year and a half for release, which is a pretty noticeable gap.

The sooner titles come out in other territories too the sooner we're expected to release something - we've not forgotten the regular edition though and appreciate people's logic as above a lot :). We'll get a standard version out as soon as we can :).

Re: The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

Am I right in thinking the front cover BBFC logo is on the cling film so the covers clean? If so it's a great idea that should be on everything ever! :) *on KLK

The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

Not exactly good news but Andrew mentioned this in one of his Facebook replies

(Psycho-Pass isn't selling incredibly well now, whereas if it came out sooner, I'd like to think it would have stood better odds because it sure is a great show...)

Manga gambled with releasing it in one fell swoop as the fans demanded it apparently. Five months behind the usa release isn't really a massive gap but there were times when amazon usa are selling the volumes for under 20 quid each so easy for people to import I suppose.

Re: The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

He also said this:
For us we're gunning for no more than a year and a half or so after the end of broadcast but we'll have to see what the licensor says too in fairness...

I assume that means Samurai Flamenco in Early 2015 if lucky (I know the show didn't get that much reception but I enjoyed it a lot).

Re: The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

I hope so. Samurai Flamenco is one of the shows I think just looks great and can't wait to see what ATA do with it.

Psycho Pass isn't selling too well? Bummer. It probably is to do with the price, I almost passed on buying it near release due to just that however I ended up buying it anyway but I imagine most are waiting till its around the £25 price range.

Got mine for that price on Amazon, but I really want to support AL, so moved my order over to the site so they get my cash entirely. Plus, there are indications on the blog there may be a "perk" and future pre-order offers.
