Kenji Mizoguchi's The Crucified Lovers (1954) will be screened at the BFI Southbank on Wednesday December 02nd at 20:40 and Sunday, December 06th at 16:00 as the BFI’s Love Season.

According to the website the film is based on a classic 17th-century play by Chikamatsu Monzaemon that sees the young wife of a rich but mean-spirited scroll-maker wrongly accused of committing adultery with her husband’s top apprentice. The falsely accused couple take flight from the husband together.

The film is widely regarded as a masterpiece and it appears to be the only Japanese film programmed in the festival. It is part of the Fatal Attractions section which is dedication to films where desire drives characters into dire trouble. The other films in the Love Season are a variety of American and European titles which include True Romance (1993), The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) and Blue Velvet (1986) although the Hong Kong classic In the Mood for Love (2000) is also in the mix.
