Kare Kano (His and Her Circumstances), and importing

subedii

Great Teacher
Watched the first episode of this (dubbed too) at our anime club some time ago and thought it was really good. Is there any word on it hitting the UK any time soon, or should I just try for an import?

Also, as a side note, I know about up1.co.uk for imports (I've used them before as well), but are there any other good import sites?

Haven't heard anything about Kare Kano coming over (but my observation skills are not exactly fantastic, so...), but I can help you on the import thing. Otaku take longer to obtain DVDs and deliver sometimes than United Publications, but they are sometimes cheaper and DVD postage is currently free. Search function could be a bit better though. PlayUSA is another one, also with free postage, but stock isn't fantastic. Still, I've found the odd thing on there, so you never know.

We need a sticky thread or a page that lists these sorts of things really.

How long soes play usa take to deliver.

Also this anime is a bit dodgy in content terms, isn't it? :?

Well not from the episode I saw. Looking over themanime.org:

Recommended Audience: Mild, mostly stapsticky violence (like a couple of punches and chase scenes) and general weirdness would prevent the youngest of viewers from watching this anyway, but this show is aimed at teens and above, as this goes through all the phases of teenage relationship angst. One major character suffers from the lasting scars of child abuse, and later episodes do have implied (but tastefully handled) adult situations.

I'm not quite sure how to interpret that, but I doubt there's anything majorly dodgy in there.

Try some sellers on Amazon.co.uk marketplace. 'caiman__usa', 'import-cd_specialists', expressdiskuk and 'kiefer_entertainment_uk' are the sellers I usually use.

Lookie here. 'kiefer_entertainment_uk' are selling the complete box set for £44.41.

Do you still have to pay shipping and import tax (and possibly VAT), or is that covered?

You have to pay shipping(I think amazon have a set price of £1.24 for that) but I havn't had to pay any other fee's even when i've ordered box sets over £50.

Interesting. I might look at that.

The only dodgy factor about Kare Kano is the lack of any kind of ending! The anime was being made at the same time the manga was being written and when the manga-ka fell really ill and couldn't continue with the manga for some time, the anime company contrived a shite ending for the anime that is probably one of the most annoying anime endings ever!
Other than that, there is nothing dodgy about Kare Kano at all, it's a sweet romance anime ^_^ (and the scene Subedii mentions in his quote, is suggested, rather than visual!).

I think I have this confused with another anime (Koikaze).

*Looks up koikaze on animeondvd.com*

GACK!

Err, no... nothing like that. Not at all.

Would you recommend getting the Manga instead then?

I've got volumes 1-17 of the manga (waiting for vol 18 next month, which is the final volume) and basically the anime follows the manga quite closely in terms of storyline, up to the point the manga-ka was ill.
If you've seen the anime and enjoyed it, but want to know what really happens, then yes! read the manga. It's one of those ocassions where the manga is definitely better than the anime ^_^

That's something I just couldn't get into. I don't mind stories about incest, some of the best stories out there are based on something incestuous (Ceres, Angel Sanctuary for example), but I couldn't get to grips with the characters in this. A sweet 15 year old girl and a fat ugly 27 year old guy tormented by his desires. It was just too yukky for me - blech!

I've been interested in seeing this for a while now - mainly because of the fact that Anno's directing it. It sounds like a very sweet and straightforward sort of story though - quite unlike what he's done before. Whether you love it or hate it, Anno's work will always produce some sort of reaction, which is why his stuff is so interesting. I'd like to think that it will get a relase here soon, but since we can't even get the eternally awesome FLCL yet without importing, this isn't likely either.

I got the entire series box set from the states and it is well worth anyone's time, a great mix of comedy and drama, with a plot that is dark at times. It's not that expensive either if i remember right, but it was awhile ago that i got it. This post as led me to the decision to go watch it again

Generally a fun mix of comedy/romance/drama all rolled into one. Very good for the anime up to the end(Gain-axed ending anyone?). Follows the manga version very closely ,but the anime drops dead at around volume 6/7. Read the manga version it's so much more to offer

I also recommend GTO /Golden Boy. Very funny
