Kanon

Hmm, while I guess you could say there was fluff in a sort of slice-of-life way,

You call transforming fox girls and disembodied souls slice-of-life? Where do you live?
Heh, no I wouldn't call that slice-of-life. I was rather referring to things like jam and alarm clocks when I mentioned fluff. Still, I wouldn't class the things you mention there as fluff - I'd call it plot...

I never noticed anything pornographic. And by "never noticed", I mean I'm pretty darn sure there was absolutely nothing pornographic in it whatsoever.

I mean pornographic in terms of being highly explicit. Like some people said the violence in Passion of the Christ was pornographic.
Ehhhh, ok... but even so, what part are you referring to being "highly explicit"? I could guess a couple of places where that sort of term could be stretched to apply, but I'd rather hear what you thought.

1) If cute baby foxes turning into Moe bait isn't fluff then the term is meaningless.

2) When I said pornographic I meant that the fluff is without inhibition or shame. Contrasted to lets say Spirited Away which is fluffy but doesn't go quite as far with it.

Kanon is very fluffy at times. Yes it's very tragic and emotional, but it's fluffy as well and shamelessly so. Thankfully, it's not overbearing, but it is always there in the background but unlike Air it never dominates or gets in the way of the plot. And it should be there to as there's absolutely no way you can do something like Kanon without the moe factor. None of this alters the fact that Kanon is a very good show, getting the cuteness level, very moving and very dramatic. Even with the more unrealistic elements, Kanon is still a slice of life drama, and one of the best examples of the genre too.

What part of Air did you watch? I'm a Kanon 2006 fan (as you can see) but I can admit there is a lot of moe. Air has nowhere near the same amount of that.

I really think you guys are confused about what "slice of life" means.

Maison Ikkoku is slice of life. Whisper of the Heart is slice of life. Kare Kano is slice of life.

It means a story about people in every day situations with nothing unrealistic. Fox girls, ninja exorcists and disembodied souls aren't part of my everyday experience.

I really feel that if a show is going to try and be serious then it shouldn't do it half assed and in an unrealistic way. I found the drama in Kannon about as believable as the love story in RahXephon. It was totally forced and had no meaning other than to say, "isn't it sad how these terrible things are only happening to cute big eyed girls".

I tried to watch Air twice, and gave up on Air during episode four both times, because I couldn't tolerate the atmosphere of the show. Perhaps it's the age differences between the girls and the male lead that put me off, but I found the slice of life scenes in the show to be intolerably fluffy, but I didn't feel the same way about the equivalent scenes in either version of Kanon.

Secondly, yes I'm well aware, Kanon is technically not 'Slice of Life' because it's plotline contains fantastical elements. Despite these elements it presents itself as a realistic drama about a boy's encounter with various girls and his struggle to remember the history he shares with them, hence the use of the term 'slice of life'. I use the term in much the same way I would use it describe Haibane Renmei, which also has unrealistic elements. it is the best way to describe the show to someone who's not familiar with it. The term 'Slice of Life' is far more applicable to Kanon to than either Maison Ikkoku or Kare Kano, both of which are out and out romances.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up. I can see where you're coming from now, and it's a fair enough point of view.

*Note - Double posting this here because i actually want to discuss Kanon and not clog up my recommendation thread *

Now I’ll be honest here, when I first started watching Kanon there was nothing that smacked me as wow! I didn’t see what the majority of the hype was about and why people were raving about it. I thought the animation was ok, but then again what Kyoto product isn’t these days? The soundtrack I though was lackluster and somewhat boring, it just didn’t feel to me like it fitted. I did however enjoy the characters from the word go, while they may have had the generic backdrop their personalities were brilliant from the start.

As time went on and I started watching more episodes the things that I didn’t like at the beginning were slowly ironed out. The animation seemed more fluid in the later episodes than the start, the overall finish and quality of the series seemed to get better as time went on. That’s not to say that it wasn’t good looking to begin with, but it just didn’t seem to stand out in the beginning. In general though, the character designs were cute and well done, plus their movements were natural. The backgrounds were actually very well done, I’ve seen images comparing the bench area (you’ll know once you watch) to the ones in real life and the layout is uncanny. There is some use of CG use in Kanon, although it’s mostly used on the Cars and some of the other nasty stuff we see.

The story was decent enough, Yuichi slowly pieces his memory together as more and more characters are brought into the mix. Each new character has it’s own story arc and they are very entertaining to watch, I couldn’t pick a favourite as I really liked each and every one.

The funny thing about Kanon is while the story is above average the characters themselves are simply amazing. I can use every superlative in the book to describe how good these characters interact with each other but I would sound like a broken record. Each individual character on their own has their strengths but when another member of the cast joins in it is viewing nirvana, They could scrap every piece of credible story for all I care but as long as Yuichi and Ayu are on the screen I would still watch Kanon and love it. The amount of care and detail that has been put into each character is breathtaking, whether it be their design, their background, the interactions with other characters it all just fits together and works. I could go into each individual character, but I’ll save that for later.

I'm not sure what character i like best? I think personally they all have thier moments and i can name each character and what moment i like, i'll do that in a few posts time actually. Yuichi does all the good guy things and his wit and charm is spot on, completley different from other characters of late (Rin from Shuffle! is the biggest twat on this planet, Kyon from Haruhi has about as much charm as a Gopher.) Ayu and Makoto are incredibly Cute in thier own ways, blah too much to write here really. I'll dedicate a post to each topic later on.

The biggest change in my opinion was the soundtrack, in the beginning it didn’t strike me as anything amazing but oh boy was I wrong. The sheer detail in choosing and performing the right piece for the scene was just breathtaking. The Piano solos in some of the episodes were delightful and I found myself watching the same piece over and over just because of the music. Also in episodes 10 and the final episode the build up to the final song was just something I will never forget, coupled with the story and characters I will always treasure those endings. The same goes for the intro and ending themes, at first they were dull and seemed out of place but now they have grown on me and honestly I couldn’t see any other song in their place.

This is just a general overview of my opinion, I really could go on for pages. 2006 has produced some of the best series I’ve seen, Kanon is by far one of the best anime in the last 5 years. Each component of the show on it’s own is good and has it’s flaws but when you put them all together to get the final product it just has this certain feel to it. The characters are believable and everyone will have their favourites, the animation is easy on the eyes and a delight to watch, couple this with a fantastic soundtrack and you get something of such a high standard that Kyoto animation is giving itself even bigger boots to fill.

Kanon gets nothing short of an A+ from me, Superb!
