Japanese DVD's, English Subtitles?

An increasing number of Japanese DVDs are. Especially the new HD format releases - which all from Bandai Visual Japan have English sub and dub (if I remember correctly). The Full Metal Alchemist movie had subs as well, but those were special cases. There were some others as well. The subs aren't of good quality though. Brave Story was another with English subs.

A good many of Ghibli's releases have English subtitles but that is not true for all of them. Howl's Moving Castle, in fact, had the English dub on it as well as subtitles for the Japanese version.

Most, as has been pointed out, do not. It is not worth the expense for the Japanese to have the anime translated and English subtitles included, most especially in the case of TV series where the budgets are often tight, when the vast majority of the people who purchase/rent them are Japanese.

Some of them do, the best rule to stick to is don't buy the dvd unless you are 100% sure they have subs, however someo of the subs are aweful, when I bought the Naruto 1st movie on import the subs were so bad I had to stop watching it

Just to add to this. It's off topic to say about Blu-ray, but then again I think it's worth mentioning quite a lot of blu-ray releases will be worldwide releases in the coming years, not all of course. I won't go into it anymore than that though and it does depend on many things, there are too many ins and outs of it, most of which are in different threads anyway : x.

EDIT: Oh and of course HD-DVD.

the 1st season of naruto had subs but the 2nd season has dubtitles which really ruins the japanese cause these dub come outta nowhere!!!
the death note movie has english subs which is rather good!!!

Whilst I was in Japan, I did alot of searching for anime DVDs with English subs. To be honest, I found that very few did. The Ghibli films though, did infact have english subtitles - resulting in my buying of Tales from Earthsea.

Whilst you're there, look out for the 英 symbol on the back of DVDs, meaning something to do with English/England. Typically you might find this kind of set up if the DVD does have English subtitiles:

1.) 日本語XXXXX
2.) 英XXXXXXXX
