Speaking of the grandfather, the plot gets deeper and weirder as it goes along. In the anime it's eventually established that

Kokoa visited the town when she was much younger and met the grandfather. She playfully casts a spell to turn him into a rabbit. It's never confirmed nor denied whether Kokoa is the reason he became a rabbit.
