In order to be fair here and defend another male, guys only act like they're interested in what you're saying when, in fact, all they want to do is look at your boobs... Unless the guy in question is gay, or the boobs in question are on a man. No-one likes hairy boobs.

Recently, as well as me continuing to age and, slowly but surely, entering the realm of becoming a dirty old man; thinking sickening thoughts about all these 2D Japanese school girls with belts for skirts, my 'inner woman' has started to come out more and more.

Truth be told, I've always had a soft spot for romance. You might find this hard to believe but I transform into a teenage girl when it comes to 'WILL THEY OR WON'T THEY DO IT!?' tales of love woes. Whether it be a man's take on romance (Love Hina) or a woman's (Mars), I'm REALLY able to get my teeth into the sort of story where you're meant to get behind an indecisive/weak-minded lead and cheer him/her on as they make a valiant attempt to evolve from a pussy into a tiger.

What's re-started my love of rom-coms/intense love triangle drama is Secondspin; the AWESOME store that has basically become my anime dealer. First I ordered 'If I See You In My Dreams', then it was 'Peach Girl' and today I had my first taste of 'I''s'.

If I See You In My Dreams is your typical male-drawn romantic comedy. What I mean by that is it's a story about a complete, HUUUUUUUUGE glasses-wearing loser falling in love with a random hot chick... and, despite logic suggesting no hot chick would even consider doing someone who looks like a loser (unless he's very rich, that is), the loser was able to win the heart of a young woman who, until her encounter with the loser, had lived the life of an in-the-closet lesbian; going to an all-girl school and never having a relationship. It's the sort of story that deadly serious, 'THIS CANNOT HAPPEN IN MY REALITY! I DROP NOW AND 1/10 TO SHOW MY SMARTS!!!!!' people would hate with passion... but, as luck would have it, I'm down with anything that's amusing AND plays with my heart-strings a little, and the similarities between it and Maison Ikkoku make me reading the manga at a later date pretty much a certainty.

Peach Girl I've already covered in detail in another blog post. In short, unlike what I described in the above paragraph, it was written by a part of the female species, and it showed. The lead is a girl, there's no needless nudity, there's the sort of drama the more girly among us eat-up like my dog eats after I starve her for a week and, basically, it was made by a female and aimed at females. It did have some amusing comedy but, unlike in rom-coms, drama was always the main focus.

ispure1.jpg

This is the expression I have when I glance over my lists and realize what, exactly, I'm rating highly. I then feel the need to check my 'equipment' is correct...

...So, what of I''s; the anime(s) I actually made this blog post about, despite me having rambled about much of nothing for a good number of paragraphs? Well, it's sort of in-between the other two titles mentioned. You can tell it was drawn by a guy because of the ecchi extras, art style (which is LOVELY, by the way!) and the fact it has a male lead, but there is a sense of realism included that's lacking in the case of titles like 'If I See You In My Dreams'. The lead isn't some freak of nature with glasses so large even my grandmother would be ashamed to wear, and he's an easy enough guy to relate to: nothing special, horny - your average teenage guy.

Before moving on, some OVA confusion needs to be cleared up. When I sat down to watch my DVDs many hours earlier, I was left totally confused as to which disc to watch first: 'I''s' or 'I''s Pure'. The back of the case was as much help as an armless man trying to help an old lady across the road, and I was forced to turn to the internet for answers. It turned out that I''s Pure is a full-on, three hour adaptation of the 15 volume manga, while I's is some cheesy averageness. In the end, I did what was suggested and started with Pure.

(Also, FYI, I''s has two apostrophes in its title because there are three important characters, each with 'I' as their initial, who form a love triangle. I know you, the reader, wanted to know, and I felt compelled to inform you. There's no need to thank me.)

mtxssz.jpg

If I ever go to Japan and find myself in a situation like this, those hours put into MGS sure would come in handy...

Talking of starts, what I liked the most about Pure was its start. Or, to be more precise, I liked how those that planned the OVA set it up in a way that kept everything needed, without me feeling like I was missing a beat or two. Y'see, Pure gets going at night; on Christmas Eve. The lead of this drama-filled story, Ichitaka, is waiting for his best friend. When the friend arrives, they chat as they wait for their other two friends, and their conversation drifts to Ichitaka's love woes, and how it all started some two years before. The focus then changes to two years ago, and as the story progresses the present/past of the story continue to interchange as the past catches up to the present. Eventually, all four friends meet-up with each other, and then the real drama begins to unfold...

By executing the OVA in this manner, rather than it seeming like the OVA was speeding through the manga content in a desperate attempt to cram everything into three hours, it seemed to me - someone not experienced with the manga - like excellent character development was being added, bit by bit, as the time for Ichitaka to go for gold with the love of his life came closer. And when the story did move beyond the flashback stage, I was tense as hell because seeing all the previous failings of Ichitaka had made me desperate to see him and Iori, his beloved, get it on.

79195de35cb611c23948a83.jpg

If this ever happens to you, and you resist, you're gay. Deal with it.

What I liked about the relationship shared by Ichitaka and Iori was how believable Ichitaka's actions were. I admit; he did start to annoy me more than Momo from Peach Girl after he spent over 30 minutes NOT saying the magic words required for legs to spread like a complete and utter retarded retard, but, early on in particular, a lot of his actions struck a chord with me. For instance, in spite of him being madly in love with Iori, when he was paired with her to plan something for the school and had to work/speak with her for the first time, he gave her the cold shoulder; leading her to believe he hated her. It's weird how it's natural to some to be a dick to those they like the most in an attempt to avoid embarrassment...

In terms of the female characters, however, I was left a little disappointed. As a result of the story being told from the perspective of a guy, the ladies didn't get fleshed out like shoujo leads do, and that left Iori being more of a cute 'dream girl' type, as opposed to a real person. And the other important female - Itsuki; a tomboy and childhood friend from Ichitaka's past - was your a typical 'childhood friend who, for reasons unknown, wants only the penis of the boy she played with (...that was NOT meant to sound dirty!) as a tween'. I can't really highlight this as a major negative when Pure is, despite it not coming across that way, a speed-run through a lengthy manga, but it would've been nice if some shoujo-esque emotional development had been mixed in with the drama and lulz. I'm hoping that, whenever I read the manga, I discover that it features more in-depth development, as opposed to just a hell of a lot more comedy than could be fitted into Pure.

bscap0005ge6.jpg

Unless you have a sister, in real life near-naked girls don't randomly walk into your house/room. It's a sad but very true fact of life.

...Oh, yes - drama and lulz. Having watched this only a few days after sitting with my hands clasped together in prayer during the latter stages of Peach Girl, watching Pure made me seriously consider how much drama Japanese school girls must have to endure. If they aren't having men attempt to 'persuade' them into having sex with them on a daily basis, they have to deal with stalkers trying to kill them, kidnapping and more love drama than any stressed-out high school student should be able to deal with without breaking down. At the very least, by watching Pure I learned that it's unwise to talk to the girl you like on the school roof... when it's windy, and you're holding an edited photo; one showing the girl's face on top of a naked model. (If you try, it's possible to learn something new every day!)

Moving back to more important matters for a moment, I've already expressed how I was feeling tense when the flashbacks ended and the story got going, and it's an understatement to say watching Pure was a test of my emotions. If I wasn't being frustrated by having to endure a phone call preventing Ichitaka's confession (x10), or Iori's agent (her being an actress/model) trying to get in the way of young love, I was left wanting to slap Ichitaka for trying to do the right thing and ending up doing the wrong thing like a complete ******* idiot. I knew there was no way in hell such a story would end without the main two getting together, sure, but that didn't stop me acting like the teenage girl I truly am; underneath all the chest hair.

While on the subject of Pure's ending, it kind of bothered me that Ichitaka and Iori weren't shown kissing; not even once. For some weird reason, the series actually ended with the two holding hands in such a way that it seemed like they were shaking hands. If there's no tongue-tango on show in the manga, after I read through all 15 volumes, I'll cry myself to sleep. The mangaka is a serious arse if he built-up to the two getting together for so long and never had them seal the deal...

ispss3.jpg

This is what Mr. Mangaka will need to do if the ending isn't a fair bit better in the manga.

...What haven't I covered yet?... THE VISUALS!!! THE BOOBS!!!!!!!

Visually, Pure looks verrrrrrrrry nice. The artwork is so good that the females actually looked sexy, and I found myself pondering why hentai often looks horrible in comparison (hey - I'm a guy!). The detail put into the panties in the end-of-episode extras in particular is worth noting. I was also impressed by the striking colours, the fact background people in crowded areas actually moved (you notice such things after watching anime for awhile, sadly...) and the range of expressions displayed by the characters. Watching Pure made me want to read the manga simply because of the high quality artwork, and the only negative I can think of about the show visually is the the way a few early scenes had parts of the screen 'cut' in some sort of attempt at being stylish. For having schools girls on the same level as GTO's, I give Pure a +10.

And, FINALLY (with regards to Pure, anyway...), the ecchi. Going on a few scans from the manga I've seen floating around, it seems like everything perverted was chucked into some short, end-of-episode extras; extras where Ichitaka had very vivid dreams involving the girls he wanted to exercise with the most. I have to say, the up-close crotch/panty shots, and the detailed panties, made me abuse the 'A-to-B' function on my DVD player's remote. I know; I'm going to hell, but you'd understand if you watched what I did! (The actual PROPER episodes were pretty much tasteful, aside from the usual 'OH NOES! I'M IN THE HOT SPRINGS WITH GIRLS, I'M BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE - HEEEELP!!!!!' bit.) There's a lot to like about I''s; even if your brain doesn't like it so much.

Here's the best of the extras ('cause long-haired girls are hot, like):

(It has Spanish subtitles, but I doubt you need to be psychic to understand the general jist of what's being said!)

Before stopping/giving up, there's one last thing I need to cover: the OTHER I''s OVA. Somewhere far, far... FAR above, I mentioned that the other OVA is best described as cheesy averageness, and that pretty much sums it up. It was created by a seemingly totally different animation team and, basically, it's a 60 minute story about an uninteresting childhood promise. There are some forced, slanty-eyed, biker rapist guys inserted to add drama, but it'd bore anyone who isn't familiar with I''s to tears, in all probability. It also throws the viewer right into the mix; showing some totally pointless still-shots/panning shots that would just leave someone in the dark even more confused, before moving onto the fairly boring story that gets covered. The most bothersome thing about watching it was noticing how poor it looked in comparison to Pure: the characters looked smaller/younger, everything was overly bright (the blacks looked gray) and, instead of the 'background movement' on show in Pure, this I''s OVA had frozen statues standing around. It's little wonder its average on MAL is close to 6/10...

is7y.jpg

...ARGGHHH, MY EYES!!!! TURN OFF THE LIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...Ok, I'm done. To sum this needlessly lengthy blog post up, Pure is incredibly underrated with its score on MAL; it being one of the better romantic dramas I've come across so far. I'm actually very surprised, considering it has ecchi and MAL members tend to only know how to use 10's. I'm glad I decided to try my luck after seeing it being sold for cheap used; ending up getting an as-new set for far less than the new prices, and I STRONGLY recommend any guys reading this/still awake go look-up Pure. Your brain and/or penis won't regret it!

Here are some extra images - one showing why I'm going to read the manga and the other highlighting just why my penis enjoyed the short, one minute extra episodes:

We would find it hard to believe, except that you're so proud of this fact that you mention it every time you talk about... most anything.

You aren't very good at this trolling business, are you? I know imitation is the greatest form of flattery, but you just make yourself look silly by being so obvious.

The message was a blog post; posting here since MAL blog posts can't be linked onto the AUKN blogging system. It wasn't aimed only at the select group of individuals who frequent AUKN. Therefore, my pointing out what I've pointed out many times on here isn't an issue.

I hope I've assisted you, for I'm now off to bed. Farewell.

lol, it was a genuine observation. You don't have to go very far on an anime board (and I assume the same is true of MAL) to find guys falling over themselves to tell you how they cried at this, that or the other, or how much they love not-traditional-for-guys genres. It's nice to see you still over-react to everything, though.

I've read the whole manga (which I loved, even though it was shounen romance, a very dodgy genre for someone with my taste) and I think I started watching the older OAV once at someone's house before deciding that the series worked best on paper. Katsura's delicious character designs are far too dainty and cute to ever quite make the leap to animation.

It sounds as though the other adaptation did a much better job. Perhaps I'll get over my phobia of animated I"s and pick it up some day just to hear what the characters sound like. It sounds as though Itsuki was almost a cameo in the anime than in the manga, where she is given more development. Iori is still my favourite though.

(I'd comment on your Peach Girl post too, however I still haven't had time to read the series in full myself and didn't like episode I saw of the anime version. Expect post necromancy in the future one day.)

Masakazu Katsura is renowned for his abilty to render the female hindquarters in loving, perhaps borderline obsessive, detail. His actual character designs, though, I find a bit creepy looking. Looking at those screenshots, I have to say I prefer the anime designs.

You might want to have a look at his Video Girl Ai anime and/or manga.

There's no comparison to be made between the old, two episode OVA and Pure. The first OVA is totally pointless and looks ugly -- I would've probably 4-5/10'd it if not for Pure developing the characters that featured in it.

Obviously, I can't say how good of an adaptation Pure is until I read the manga, but I saw little to no faults with Pure; viewing it from my ignorant perspective. Itsuke did enter and exit the picture in two episodes (the flashbacks ended during the 4th episode; Itsuke having gone back to America in the third), and Izumi - the fourth 'I' - only featured in one episode, but I wouldn't say it seemed like they were being mistreated due to time constraints. The only time there did seem to be an unnatural leap was when the story jumped forward a year after the fifth episode... but, even then, that timeskip only made the last episode all the more interesting.

Don't worry; I don't expect you to respond to EVERY long-arse post made by me. It'd be nice but, I promise: I won't blacklist you if you ignore me a fair bit. I've already had to deal with the heartbreak of you ignoring the last reply I sent (after a month) via the wonderful AUKN PM system, so I'm mentally prepared already.

Out of love for Pure, I ordered the first seven volumes of the manga after you mentioned reading it made me check to see if it had been released in English officially; me not thinking it had been prior to your post. I am saddened by the fact Viz censored the hell of it; putting stars over nipples and sound-effects over swimsuits -- removing half the reason I wanted to read the manga -- but reading censored volumes of manga on my bed is far more tempting than reading 15 volumes of manga on my PC screen; uncensored or not.

On a manga-buying related note, the other day I won the first six volumes of 'High School Girls'. I remembered you mentioning that the manga is an insightful look into how girls truly are at all-girl schools, and I felt compelled to discover the truth behind the mystery. I imagine all-girl places to be hives for lesbian activity, do here's hoping!

(If I get into I''s and High School Girls, I might switch over from anime to manga once more. Aside from the latest Gantz and Ikigami releases, I haven't been reading any manga lately - I've been ALL anime...)

Video Girl Ai? I did notice there's an OVA for it before, but isn't it a CG-fest? I haven't looked into it too much...

I might make a third (and final, for the time being - too many paragraphs!) blog post if any of my other soon-to-be-watched OVA titles make an impression. I'm actually hoping I DON'T feel the need to ramble...

Definitely sounds as though I should pick up I"s Pure to fill out an order at some point in the future.

The Video Girl Ai OVA was very well regarded at the time. It ends quite sharply (the manga is much longer, of course) but it's charming in that early 90s way and has excellent music. Of course, the same kind of fan who champions VGA would probably also say Giant Robo is a great series so you may hate it - classics don't age so well when they start being repeated by newer series and become caught up in cliche. Cliche and old. Surprised you haven't ferreted it out purely out of curiosity though since it's out of print and short.

I think my favourite Katsura manga is probably Shadow Lady. It's completely dumb (on purpose) and very short, but his character designs are right on form and I have very fond memories of it. Part of the appeal may be down to my past as a reader of western superhero comics. Katsura is one of the few artists I think who draws genuinely cute girls. Chances are you will further question my gender in future for saying things like this...

It will be interesting to see what you make of High School Girls. Your hopes for lesbian intrigue and seduction may be completely dashed by the fairly accurate portrayal of how mindless and stupid young girls can be, so I hope it does not send you spiralling into depression. If it does, at least you have Iori's panties to look forward to soon in manga form.

(I will respond to your PM soon - you were in one of your, erm, "bastard bad guy" phases just afterwards and I didn't feel like replying in case I had to ban you before you read it, wasting my effort. It's on my list of things to do though.)

Do so. Chances are, you'll derive a fair bit of enjoyment out of the experience; you being a fan of the manga and all.

I'm sure, at some point, I'll ramble a little about the manga; if only because I typed so much about the OVA. Assuming my PC is still ticking by the time I get reading, stay tuned for another novel entry. :)

Honestly, until I watched I''s, I was pretty much totally ignorant about the mangaka's work, and that meant I completely overlooked the Ai OVA prior to this. I do recall seeing it pop-up on eBay once or twice, but, because of its title and cover art, I was under the impression it was some cheap, CG-heavy rubbish. That's what assumptions will do for you, I guess - lesson learned!

What interests me about Ai OVA is that it appears to be the exact same length as I''s Pure; it also being based on a near enough equally long ecchi manga. SS/Wherehouse don't have any copies, and it's long OOP now, so I guess I'll have to use the net to watch it after I'm done with I''s...

No doubt, when I experience the (censored) loveliness of Katsura's art for the first time, I'll be compelled to check out his other work, and a four volume title would be easy enough for even a lazy sod like myself to complete.

I would do so, but I've pulled the 'Rui=Roy' **** so many times now that it isn't funny anymore. It's quite depressing, actually... Maybe I need to think up an all-new way to attempt to get you angry and, finally, earn the ban I deserve?

Not if the censorship complaining on ANN and elsewhere is anything to go by, I won't! If swimsuits were covered up, then I imagine close-up panty shots might also get some attention. Damn Americans...

Do you own the Viz releases, by the way? And, if so, any comments on the editing - will it prevent me from... getting the maximum pleasure out of the manga? (You seem very well-informed about what guys like looking at, so I thought I'd ask.)

I'm afraid I have the Japanese volumes for I"s. As far as I know the Viz books mostly just starred out nipples rather than covering every ecchi page in black lines, but you'll have to include that in your eventual review!

I don't know if it's just a girl thing but somehow adding black stars over anything that is potentially dodgy makes it seem smuttier than just showing the nipples in the first place, so I wonder what the effect is when you're actually reading the "toned down" version.

R

I hate myself for doing it, but I DID blog again about I''s, in the end. I planned on just, y'know, making a short forum post... BUT IT STILL ******* TURNED INTO AN ENDLESS MESSAGE, IT STILL TOOK ******* FOREVER AND I DIDN'T EVEN GET TO MOAN ABOUT IZUMI'S ROLE IN THE STORY AFTER THE ISLAND PART.

Viz were dumb when they released I''s - that's all that needs to be said, really. They used the stars on the nipples for one picture because the same edited image, as part of a joke, had the stars over Iori's nipples later on in the uncensored version. But they didn't do that when they censored the other nipples, instead opting to give the manga the Akamatsu treatment; removing nipples and using steam. (I think reading Love Hina, and seeing Akamatsu censor his own work, prevented me from being annoyed...)

Not sure why you'd think people that dislike who Giant Robo might dislike VGA. Age is immaterial, and that's why I'm typing to you. It wasn't the cliches that made me negative about GR: it was the pointless/ignorant lead, the plot 'twists' that were obvious from a mile away, the unexplained/retarded superpowers, the cosplaying heroes and, among other things, the childish robot designs. I saw very little value in it and struggled to complete it because there was very little in the way of 'human elements' I could connect.

Stories that deal with romance are different simply because they deal with human interaction and emotions. Where as GR made me cringe because of the silliness of it all, I actually cared about what was going on in VGA. It did open with some OMG-esque, 'magical girl' ********, and the final 'video world' episode was a bit too daft for my refined tastes, but I did derive a lot of enjoyment of of what was situated in-between.

Ai's tomboyish personality made her instantly likable - her clearly being the character Itsuki was based on - and I was cheering for her from the start. The Takashi (dick) and Momoi characters seemed like no more than plot devices in the OVA, and the lead was a bit too pathetic sounding to like, but Ai made me care. I plan on reading the manga for more Katsura goodness, if only for his artwork. :D

(On a random note, I'm unsure why one VGA fan described VGA as unpredictable and I''s predictable when the title alone pretty much told people who'd win the pathetic lead's heart in the end. When a series is titled after a character, that character is going to be a winrar - that's just common sense, like!)

...Where was I? Oh, yes - Ai. In the case of VGA, Katsura made a tomboy into the winner; Ai winning over a far more reserved pretty girl. However, he reversed that in I''s. I guess it would've been boring if he always let the tomboys win!

By the way, you mentioned it ended sharply. Was the OVA made before the manga ended? I rated the OVA 8/10, but the ending was a bit... naff, to put it politely.

...OH! HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS!

I've read 6/9, and I rate it 9/10 atm. Its humour is just my cup of tea - bordering on being stupid but having enough realism mixed in to prevent it turning out like Excel Saga.

The dry-humping 'dieting plan' struck me as being most interesting. Is this normal at all-girl schools, in your experience?

...Err, anyway. An example of the HSG humour is when Eriko, lured into a love hotel by someone she was supposed to be luring into a trap, was too fascinated by the room she was in to care about her situation. It was funny when, even after the guy got on top of her with a serious look, she was playing with the beds vibration function; the guy complaining about motion sickness. And her expression when she was waving around a vibrator afterwards was also pretty sweet.

In short: HSG is funny but, as well as being funny, it somehow makes me believe females aren't aliens. I like manga that teaches me such things.

Now, if only Play actually sent me things...

Giant Robo was such a thoroughly fun show to me that I can't imagine not liking it; therefore I'm a little anxious about recommending things to someone who didn't dig it. It sounds as though that isn't a problem here though as you're much more open about romance stories. Ai was a charming character so I'm glad you liked her. The show was, as you thought, a victim of "ongoing manga" syndrome.

Most love triangle shows are fairly predictable really. No matter how unlikely the leads' original encounter is set up to be, I rarely find I can't tell who will be destined for who by the end of the first volume/disc. People who are desperate for completely unpredictable content probably shouldn't be reading shounen/shoujo romance stories.

It's interesting when this certainty is subverted or played with though. I remember being quite uncertain through Rumbling Hearts/KimiNozo when I first watched it as the game, of course, has multiple paths, and I wasn't quite sure what was going to happen in the fixed storyline of the anime. Pity I hated the male lead or I might have liked that series more!

Whilst I'm rambling away there's also DNA^2 out in R1 as a fairly cheap anime with Katsura involved. It's generally regarded as less good; I thought it was a fun little series though not a classic like Ai and not "realistic" (by anime standards) like I"s. It has more of the fantasy elements of Ai with fewer of the intimate, human elements. Still, if you haven't seen it already it might be worth a look in a Secondspin sale.

***

I'm delighted that the HSG recommendation worked out as I think it's a tragically underrated little gem. As fun as the usual manga "babe" characters are, in a world of moe fluff it's refreshing to occasionally pick up a series which shows the girls to be people with gaping flaws and bizarre personalities instead of temptresses.

It had a bit of a chequered release with the original run halted even in the US until it was rescued and the Japanese release had problems too. If the manga artist feels like revisiting the series again one day, I'll be in line to buy more.

To answer the rhetorical question, I sadly did not personally witness any of that special kind of dieting at my all girls school, but it may just be that I was not in the correct group to be invited to join in. There were plenty of other terrifyingly stupid adventures going on though.

I'm glad I didn't let the disappointing HSG anime prevent me from checking out the vastly superior manga. It takes random manga stories, makes various odd changes, adds ridiculous levels of fanservice (as if the manga didn't have enough), and shoehorns in some misplaced drama.

But yeah, the manga is underappreciated. But though it provides a unique insight into the lives of high school girls, I suspect there's a limit to how "realistic" it is...

Ah, I totally did let it do that. I think I meant to buy it as (you?) pointed out to me that the complete set of it was pretty cheap somewhere, but... I didn't.

I notice Fabio has learned quickly how foolish it is to argue with one such as myself; even when his favourite anime is involved. Most impressive. I like my internet people submissive/slave-like.

Giant Robo might've been a whole lot of fun if I'd watched it when I was a far younger, vastly inferior Aion, but now I'm different; now I type too many paragraphs in order to express myself. I detect flaws, get annoyed and moan more often than not these days about pretty much everything; explaining why I didn't give a higher score, rather than explaining why I gave the score I did... unless what I'm watching is 10/10 worthy or 'up my street'. And Giant Robo had too many problems to count with my fingers. Heck, even if I added in my toes and ****, I probably still would've struggled to list all my issues with it. (I might be exaggerating just a little, here. Calm down if you're preparing to delete me once again, my love.)

...But, yes, you're basically right: I like romantic comedies, and panties/boobs. So, naturally, I like VGA more than the anime with a very well thought out title.

To be honest, and to prove I'm not some all-knowing God, I assumed the VGA OVA was a rushed adaptation of MOST of the manga; cutting off not too far from the end. But, actually, it appears only the start of the manga got the anime treatment. I'm not too fussed since that just means I have more to look forward to when I read the manga, but it did surprise me that not even half (iirc) of the manga got covered...

Do you happen to know how much content the OVA included? I be curious.

Pretty much everything outside of more mature, 'everyone might die!' or 'this might not have a happy ending!' stories are insanely predictable. I lost interest in Naruto and its ilk with the passing of time for this very reason... despite once naming myself 'Sasuke X' on a Naruto forum. The only time I'm willing to overlook predictability is when my heart-strings are being played with, and, as luck would have it, romance stories play with my emotions more than is good.

I have DNA^2 on my lengthy SS bookmark list already. After experiencing the wonders of Katsura's drawings, I'll more than likely get the DVDs whenever I next receive an email about codes being active. As you're well aware by now, I cannot resit the allure of second-hand, R1 anime DVDs. However, with my current CC bills/fraud drama, I'm hoping there won't be any new codes for awhile!

...Something including few "human elements" is never a good thing in my book, though. I can handle titles like Chobits and VGA where the sci-fi silliness remains in the background for the vast majority of the time, but I have less time for the type of story where the emphasis is placed on silliness.

What I dislike about anime/manga quite a lot is the heavy sexism. Most of the time, females are made to serve males (/Belldandy) or, like Iori, are happy to be in a relationship with a loser for no good reason. They don't come across as real people; most of the time because the female characters in question were created from the minds of men. It probably isn't a coincidence that HSG was written/drawn by a woman and is different from the norm... even though I believe she's got a porno manga out involving slavery.

I got the last copy of the seventh volume from TBD, btw. I can now die happy; knowing no-one else will ever be able to buy a complete collection if they only rely on 'find-book'. As ever, I seem to have impeccable timing when it comes to buying hard to get books... Eden aside.

Goodbye, and feel free to share your tales of lesbianism with me. I'm all eyes.
