how to introduce anime to someone

I hate it when people do this. Anime are Japanese cartoons. Get over it.
This x1000. =/

Except, I usually use the term to refer to American animation.

For example:

American Graphic Novels: "Comics"
Japanese Graphic Novels: "Manga"

same as

Japanese Animation: "Anime"
American Animation: "Cartoons"

Anime is short for Japanese animations not Japanese cartoons. Cartoons is well short for cartoons. I can not and will not put the likes of Neon Genesis Evangelion in the same category as Bugs Bunny.
Jog on. Watch some damn Venture Bros or Archer, you friggen Weaboo. :(

Now now, it isn't nice the through around such derogatory comments.

In my opinion, the whole 'anime' vs 'cartoons' argument is just Op onions and a bunch of tosh.

As they say, "a rose by any other name is just as sweet".

At the end of the day, call 'anime', 'cartoons' or 'animation' what every you want but it is nothing more than a label.

Yeah, I know. I was just saying, I just call it 'animation', but use the nicknames 'anime' and 'cartoons' to refer to Japanese and American animation respectively.

And, sorry, just pisses me off when someone insults american animation, but you know they'd throw a hissy fit if someone said anything along the lines of 'chinese pr0n cartoons'

Just like to point out i was not insulting american animation i grew up on the stuff, the likes of Transformers (Originial), pole position, centurions, he-man etc.

I currently own almost all marvel and dc animated movies and tv shows on dvd as well as classic american animation listed above if they have had a dvd release, infact just ordered Green Lantern Emerald Knights on bluray/dvd combi for £8.99 from HMV.com.

I prefer to call my american animation cartoons and my japanese animation by anime, but it is down to personal preference, I just won't mix the two as they both have their own distinctive styles.

Oh and for your information have watched venture bros etc and prefer Family Guy :D

Oh, right, then why did you compare it to Bugs Bunny?! :?

Awesome! *bro-fi...

..nevermind

I wasn't comparing it to Bugs Bunny i was using him as an example of American animation and NGE as an example of Anime trying to show the difference between the too as Bugs is an Icon of American animation and used NGE due to it currently having a reboot.

I could of used Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels or Challenge of the Gobots but as kids use the site and wouldn't have a clue who they are (without google) i thought i would use Bugs Bunny as I don't know anyone who hasn't heard of Bugs. Should of made myself clearer.

Soz to let you down on the Family Guy front but if it makes you happier i'm going off it as of late as its not as good as it used to be.

Genshiken isn't really a good introductory anime to be honest (at least IMO), as it relies on some understanding of tropes etc.

I'd agree with Deathnote though. If the person likes action, Black Lagoon would also probably be a good suggestion too, as it's quite western in many ways and the dub is really strong. Beck would also work quite well, as again, it's got a dub, and the formation of a band is a fairly universal interest.

@Paradox295 oh ouch that hurt sounds like you dont want me here to bad tho.
anyway i only put the GENSHIKEN idea in here to suggest i didn't mean to start it up again .

You really are bored today aren't you af?

I agree with alexrose that Genshiken is a terrible idea for an introductory anime. But out of curiosity, I'd love to hear the reasoning behind your choice. You might have some insight into why Genshiken would make a good first anime that others haven't thought of.

@ayase im glad you asked why ayase
this is in the anime

when i watched the first disc of GENSHIKEN i saw how somethings are explained in like why some otaku likes 2D and adult games. ( bad example i know ) it also shows that if someone likes something that someone else hates they can try to understand how the other person loves something. also if you like someone but dont like what there into then you should dump them,
to be honest this is more intro to people who loves anime then anime its self but if they saw how fans are then they might understand a lil.

iv only seen disc 1 and i like it and i think theres a more lessons on the subjects

it sounds silly i know but i suggest this after a few really good animes they've watched then watch GENSHIKEN and they can see what otaku/fan do

Nah, dude. See, I wouldn't mind you if you stopped posting pointless threads like this one. And maybe if your spelling and grammar was better. Yeah, I know you're using a PS3.

But, I meant.. dude, you have been for 9 months, but you keep doing stuff that people have told you to stop doing the whole time.

I don't wanna like "kick you out" or anything. Just don't necro stuff.

@Paradox295 i thought id help with stuff to talk about :(
i feel like im being left out cause me being the tobi of the threads im the annoying, no sense, baka ( japanese for idiot )

I know, but if I'm completely honest... there isn't a lot to talk about here. I mean most of the discussion is when something gets released or licensed or something like that.

Also... yeah.. uh. No, Genshiken definitely isn't a good starter anime for the exact reasons you stated.

Nobody should act like anime is a lifestyle. It's simply another form of entertainment.

tell that to the true otaku i think they'll say otherwise lol. to be honest i thought i was an otaku but im not i haven't got loads of figures, games, posters. the only things i have is nearly 400 series and movies of anime i love watching anime but i dont cosplay, play games, posters, i just collect and watch them cause i enjoy watching them.

ok i guess GENSHIKEN isn't a good choice

Sorry to drag the discussion off topic (though it wasn't really going anywhere anyway) but I take exception to the idea that there are ways anybody should or shouldn't act. As long as what they're doing isn't actually harming anyone, people should be free to act however they want without others judging them for it.

And... thanks for actually explaining your choice af. While it might seem to make sense to introduce people to aspects of anime and otaku culture through a very referential show, I think so much would go right over the heads of (or even actively put off) anyone not already familiar with it. Which is why I think it would be a bad idea.

@AF
True Otaku are like the obsessive fringe element you find with every hobby and pastime, it's simply that Otaku is the term given to it by the Japanese in regards to this specific hobby set.

Personally I don't mind admitting to being a geek, a western otaku, but I'm not even sure how you could call it a lifestyle unless there's absolutely nothing else you enjoy or do and focus everything in your life around it. In my case anime is one of several hobbies, and whilst as a hobby its part of my lifestyle, it's not the entirety, and I'd imagine that's the same for all of us here.

This is true. I don't wanna force anyone to think anyway. But, if I'm completely honest, having no life outside anime makes you... kinda annoying?

I mean, if all you wanna do with your life is watch anime, be my guest.. but there's better things you could be doing.
