How old is too old to be still living with your parents

Anyway, the rules of the English language are clear and rigid. What is wrong is wrong, and will stay that way no matter how much you will it.
loooooooooooooooooool

Language: the same as it always has been for hundreds of years.

Oh no wait, that's not even remotely the case.

I never said language has never changed, just that mere peons cannot change it. Only the relevant authority can.

I like you Mutsumi, but you don't half dissappear up your own arse sometimes.

What makes "the relevant authority" any better than us "mere peons"?

it is mum, not mom. This isn't the US. :p

And what if "Mom" is the nickname?

Where I live, it's common to say Mam; should I be criticized for mixing my native tongue in with English?

It's annoying when people claim names can be 'Right' or 'Wrong'. If you want to be this fussy, then surely it should be Mother, not Mum?

Alternative forms

mam
mom, Mom (US, Canada)
Mum

Ofcorse :p because just to throw a spanner in the works, welsh is a dying language and plus people in the north or england say mam :p

Mum
Mam
Mother
Cow.

Personally the last one is the nicest i can possibly say about mine. (Though preferred terminology when referring to her begins with B and ends in CH)

XD I like you too, and I generally agree with a lot of what you say, particularly your appreciation of solitude and one's own space, which is an appreciation I share. However, we are total opposites on the whole order versus chaos thing, and I am sure that what is making perfect sense to me will not to you, and vice versa.

The relevant authority is better because they know better, in the same way that whatever scientific authority knows better than us in whatever field it specialises in.

I couldn't really comment on that, aside from saying that I think when you are have two native languages, some mix and match is bound to occur, and while it may be incorrect English, it is no worse a deviation than any other local dialect is. Local dialects are essentially an accepted deviation from what is right, when used in their country of origin.

I actually meant that in Welsh, your mother is "Mam", and your father is "Tad". These are literal translations, not just habbit.

As for the language dying? There is a big push for it recently; and the number of people speaking it has stayed fairly constant for quite some time. I actually predict an increase in Welsh Language speakers in the near-future.

Also worth noting, 'Mam' and 'Tad' were not derived from English.

Wait, what? At the end of the day we are all humans, generally speaking we all have the same capabilities (both physically and based on intellect) ofcorse there are some with mental health issues or physically handicapped people. but relatively speaking across the board we are all equal.... so considering we are all the same, how can you say that one group, collectively as an authority know any better? They haven't had any divine knowledge bestowed upon them so they are no more potentially knowledgable than anyone else.

Laws are mostly man made, so for you to say that something that is man made and enforced by other men makes them fall into the "they know better" pool then without that divine knowledge from a higher being/source then they are essentially just following the laws they set in place to suppress the masses.

Granted there are many laws which are good ones and aren't surpressing anyone.... but then there are some stupid laws (like that one where if your walking through leister at 00:00 carrying a bow and arrow, and meet a scotsman, you can lawfully kill him.... can't remember the exact bits but thats basically what it was about)

Ahh good, because you don't want it to become a dead language like latin (i was actually laid thinking about languages of the western world and came to the conclusion that speaking welsh was the one that i plugged for death next.

Is it strange that i read that as "mam" and "Tod", either way it made me lol so i guess it works. And god knows where manc's and surrounding towns/cities got "me mam" from, could have actually been something to do with scotland or maybe i'm clutching at straws and actually way of mark.

I'd only think it unusual if someone was maybe in their 40s and still living with parents (the assumption being that most people have stable careers and maybe even long-term partners by that age). Because, to be honest, these days, moving out just for the sake of moving out is a financially bad decision.

26 years old and living at home is perfectly normal.

They may have the same potential as anyone else, biologically speaking, but if you are knowledgeable enough on your chosen subject that you join whatever group is the authority in said subject, then you probably do know better on that subject that anyone else. Certain people know better than others on certain subjects, that is the way things have always been.

Belated congrats! I turned 30 on Sunday ;_;

OT: The English language doesn't even have a "relevant authority". There are aspects of the language that even the so-called experts can't agree on, and it's that flexibility which makes English so interesting.

There are plenty of GCSE/A-level/Degree courses in English. How do they determine what is right and wrong then? Use Americanisms like 'mom' there and you'll get penalised.

Yeah thats true, however the thing i'm trying to get at is.... "because they know better" Do they? who's to say that the laws are 100% correct? who's to say they aren't made to surpress the masses?

Reasoning behind why i said that; we started paying tax for some obvious reasons, but why are things pushed in the favour of those with the power? (look at the expenses claim frauds within the government and every so often they'll pass a sneaky law in) Look at the pirate radio from the 70's was it so wrong to play the music the country loved? no ofcorse not, but the government saught to surpress the "pirate radio stations" and they even went as far as to pass the marine laws to get rid of them.

Well without those pirate radio stations, we wouldn't have had the radio stations we have now.... So look at it another way, they may hold the knowledge, but its knowledge they've invented. So who's to say if its truly right?
