how do you decide to buy your anime stuff

I don't have a HMV and very rarely visit one. So if i'm shopping around in a town with a HMV, you can usually guarantee i'm there. Usually what I do is depending on the money and what I need, i'll set some aside for anime & manga. Then depending on if they got a series I like or something I need to finish off I will buy it as long as it's for a reasonable price even if I know it can be cheaper online.

One example is High School of the Dead which I saw in HMV earlier today, I was considering buying it as I wanted to give the dub ago however for £19.99, I didn't consider the number of episodes and quality to be worth it. I figured I probably could get something more worth while.

When it comes to online orders, I tend to order something that would get one volume closer to finishing a series. Of course this is depending on price too, if I brought two parts for £8, I don't expect to pay £22 for the next part.

How I've decided to go about importing is that I will give a series, 6 months to be picked up by a UK dis or if I think it's unlikely to get a UK license at all then I will probably import it. Example being No. 6 which I doubt will be licensed.

I only really buy Japanese releases if I know my husband will hate the show (or if it has subs) or if it comes with some amazing bonus seiyuu-related extra which will never come out with a future localised version. Otherwise I just wait cheaply. Though awesome extras are becoming standard nowadays; they are on to me.
If I was going to be overly affected by extras, it would be artboxes for shows I don't expect to get a particularly nice release over here, or "character" commentaries when written by the original LN author or something (which are becoming more proliferant now). The real reasons for me are a) too many shows ****ed up by the US company and b) BD goodness guaranteed. Haven't imported a show from Japan on DVD since Natsu no Arashi!.

How do you profit from buying things?
Because they were on sale! No, wait...

Ahh, while I don't say no to a nice artbox when there's the choice, I don't think they have ever driven me to a purchase. LE CDs which become like gold dust eventually however tend to make me rage quite badly, so I pounce on them when I can. I don't mind DVDs still though, which is fortunate given that my areas of interest seem to have been slower to embrace the blu-ray era.

I go into HMV and spend about 10 minutes walking around trying to find out where the hell the anime section is this week. After I sift through all the Marvel DVDs (go away, Dr Strange) I usually find a couple of things I want, so I check Amazon on my phone.

If the price difference is only a quid (or nothing), I'll buy it at HMV...if it's a decent bit cheaper online, I'll just get it from Play (via Quidco) when I get home. I'm never in so much of a rush to watch something that I'd just waste £7.

I don't usually go in with an intention to buy something specific...stuff usually just catches my eye.

It's the fault of the JP companies lack of faith in you fangirls to buy the BD versions that has caused this! :p

Your mention of CDs reminds me of the other thing that has me default-buying some JP releases these days: bonus mini/side story LNs. This stuff stays so expensive second hand once the FP is sold out (see: Index season one BDs).

Bonus comics or short stories are evil, they are almost up there with exclusive drama CDs. But I think my biggest weakness is still seiyuu stuff.

At least T&B has shown that fangirls can by persuaded to run out and buy the blu-ray versions when the package is sweet enough and the two versions actually come out at the same time (at least, it's certainly been getting a lot of discussion on my lady-orientated websites). I'd rather have more features than extra pixels most of the time though. Need to save my cash for boatloads of rude doujinshi and radio CDs >_>;

I'm very bored today so forgive the necropost.

Generally, if it's a series I'm really interested in, at a good price, I'll pick it up ASAP to support the industry. I generally try and buy new where I can, even if I wait for the price to go down.

As for merch, I look longingly at images and know that all of it is too expensive to even consider purchasing :p (Also I've used ebay a good few times and generally it's been pretty good for Robot Tamashii (damashii?), MSIA, Revoltech stuff.)

I dunno about that, I kind of get what he means, I often weigh my purchases as 1 expensive new item vs several cheaper ones. If you're intending on spending a set amount of money, then going for more of cheaper than fewer of dearer is not entirely non-sensical.

No, "the cheaper they are the more you buy" is bordering on the definition of a false economy.

I'm still not sure I see the problem :p It's one of the key selling techniques. Buy one get one free/ 3 for the price of 2. You might've been just wanting to get one item, but if it's on offer i.e. cheaper, you're more likely to purchase a larger quantity.
