how do you decide to buy your anime stuff

when you go shopping or deciding what to buy *depending what your buying* e.g. dvds, figures, manga, ect,

in my case i buy dvds, if im going to buy dvds it'll depend if im buying at random or im getting ones i want-

depending how much iv got -
if at random il buy the cheapest first so that way il get more,
e.g. if i had £100 and there are 20 dvds that was £5 to £10 each * depending on the price* id use up the £100 to buy them (il only get series)

*if i had £100* if it was something i wanted like e.g. revolutionary girl boxsets or all the gundam movies and series il get all the gundam series and movies and if i have any money left il save it to buy the revolutionary girl boxsets for next time or il buy a fan service anime or two on the side.

depends really

Usually, when I buy something it goes like such.

I walk into HMV, stare at the dvds for a few minutes, walk around, walk out the store, re-enter the store and browse other shelves so it doesn't look like I am some sort of weirdo standing around for ages in front of the anime dvds till I pick one, then I wander back to the anime dvds, look at them for a little longer, pick up a few, consider my purchase and then leave the store empty handed. Sometimes I buy things though.
basically browsing

that sounds nice but i haven't been shopping like that in ages since i know that forbidden planet and hmv hasn't got anything i want since i preorder all the stuff they've got from there websites..................... man i need to get out more

I look in HMV out of habit, but havent purchased anything for ages, last thing I got there was Code geass when they had the half series sets for 20 quid in the sale last year.

I look at price to episode ratio and consider how quickly it will dissapear if I dont buy it now (Evangelion, Utena)

I have a few reviewers/podcasters whos views I respect because they match up with mine a lot. I will see if they have recomended it. ( I just got Giant Robo because AWO podcast keeps saying its worth it)

I ask questions on forums to see if other people like it (will probs buy Black Butler based on this)

Sometimes I blind buy a series because the concept sounds interesting (I have Simoun sat on my book shelf ready to watch)

Sometimes I pick something up because I saw it cheep in cex and thought why not ... ( Ju-Oh-sei )

Lately I just preorder absolutely anything I want (online) because so little is coming out that it has become financially viable to do so.

I went through a period of doing that, before I imported as many JP releases as I do now. Now I tend to break down shows into "when to purchase" categories as they air. A few into the "JP import" category, a few into the "US import as soon as it comes out" category, and the others that I'm interested in go into the vague "buy at some stage, maybe even the UK release" category.

I rarely make completely spur-of-the-moment purchases these days, unless there is a particularly good sale on.

I don't usually buy in store anymore, though as a rule of thumb towards buying anything in life i search the web (using my phone if i'm on the move otherwise mostly on laptop and get it ordered to my door) for the specific details of the item i'm buying, then i search for the same product but at the cheapest price i can find and depending on how much I think I can spare to buy it.

However being an impulse buyer if I see something advertised at 3 for 2 (once saw they where doing a promo of 3 for 1 in a night club and ended up buying 18 drinks for just 3 of us) And normally too generous with cash and buy friends stuff so I end up with a lot of friends owing favours and that’s always a good way to help balance my spending (if I don’t have the money then I can’t spend it really and usually spend a lot more cautiously when on low cash)

Hmm...well, if something costs more than £15 (give or take a few quid) it's out of blind buy territory. In fact, with anime, blind buys are rare for me. If I haven't seen a series already, I usually go with what a lot of people have said (Code Geass, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Summer Wars are exampls).

Usually, when I go shopping I have in mind exactly what I want to buy. There will be occasions where I'll see a series I was thinking of getting, and I'll buy it (Lucky Star), but I rarely ever randomly buy a series. Only buy like that I can remember was Always My Santa, which was around £10 at the time iirc.

That's similar to how I do it, only you're more generous :D

Pretty much everything goes into the "US import as soon as it comes out" category for me, with a few exceptions for shows I know in my heart I won't actually like that much but feel I should see, which become "UK import as soon as it comes out or buy cheaply whenever". HOTD is sort of like that. I still don't have it because I know I don't actually like zombie stuff, but I was going to buy it from Manga to be aimlessly supportive and enjoy the mindless flying breasts. Until I became mardy with them and cancelled the order. K-On! is similar, I know I'll probably hate it but I sort of want to see it anyway - in a complete collection.

I only really buy Japanese releases if I know my husband will hate the show (or if it has subs) or if it comes with some amazing bonus seiyuu-related extra which will never come out with a future localised version. Otherwise I just wait cheaply. Though awesome extras are becoming standard nowadays; they are on to me.

I hear about something I like the sound of (usually by reading people's recommendations on here, or by looking at the works of creators I already like) and order it online. I usually have a few pre-orders on the go as well.

I'm not a big fansub consumer (preferring to restrict that to things I expect to never receive an English release) and I dislike streaming, so most of my purchases are made based on research without watching beforehand.

dose anyone go on ebay and put on a bid. i dont im just asking

Regarding anime, manga figures and merch? no

Reason? the major problem with ebay is that bootlegs are second nature, you will no doubt get ripped off by buying from there, steer clear and stay with more reputable websites with fixed prices, atleast you'll have less chance of buying a bootleg (sometimes fixed prices don't mean its not bootlegged, just look at CEX, there is no doubt bootlegged gear there)

No problems man, just don't want to see another person getting scammed - its fairly easy to fall for some things (hell even some things at the expo's are fake, though we had one guy join and try to bash about it, resulting in the whole forum disagreeing with what he had to say but thats a story for another time)

And i think you meant Senpai lol. No worries :thumb:

The thing about Ebay is that it's really easy to spot bootlegs, most of them are dirt cheap and usually say something like Episodes 1-END in their description.

Me? I stick to HMV, I don't order much online so if I see it in a shop and I've got the money, I'll buy it, the larger stores tend to have a good selection, although Bath has downgraded the size of their Anime section recently, which is something I'm not too happy about.

Then again I don't buy much anime, because by the time I find something I've already burnt most of my money on CDs, so all the anime I do want is constantly getting push down my list.

I never use eBay for anime/figures/merch but I may do for manga if I can get a good deal! too many bootlegs especially with figures and other merchandise

when it comes to buying in-store usually have some idea of what I want before and the price it is online so I always know I never overspend by too much (happens alot with anime for sure, considering how expensive it is some times)
