I've never had Sky or cable or anything like that, so my Anime has always been exclusively Video or now, DVD. I wonder if Anime will ever make it through to Freeview?

Oh you cannot believe how much a difference there is between now and eight years ago. This was pre dvd, pre internet shopping, and pre major fansubbing like it is now (ah the glory days of dial up ) I still remember what my first search up town in about 2000 for anime found - about 5 videos in MVC and several bits and pieces found in a second hand electricals shop
The arrival of DVDs and the Internet has made an immesurable difference. Even in 2002, when Anime was on Fox Kids, the MVC selection was about 20 videos, a year later it was 5 shelves full of Dvds. (of course our poor MVC, for so long the best shop in Exeter for Anime is gone, but HMV has picked up the slack a bit, even if I do get most of my stuff of Amazon or Play now.)
However probably the most important was Pokemon and such. I hate to say it, but it was probably the truth. The first Anime to be splattered all over the place caused Fox Kids to chuck everything at it (I remember watching that channel for hours on end while at college, at the time the marathon of Sailor Moon, Digimon, Flint the time detective, and Escaflowne was extremely heavy stuff outside of the Sci Fi block) It got people into it and opened the doors rather more.
I still find it odd that basically all the channels chucked Anime almost at the same time, just when the Dvd market for Anime exploded over here, and it has taken like 4 years with only the brief arrival and disapearance of Rapture and CNX as an interlude on Tv. Sad in all, but it is slowly reappearing now.
