Highly Rated Games which you simply didn't enjoy?

Have you ever played a game considered to be one of the best of its day or even history but simply couldn't enjoy it?

I just can't get into Super Mario 3 even though it considered one of the greatest games ever. It's not like I don't like Mario as I consider Super Mario 1 & Super Mario Galaxy as 2 best games in history.

While I can't question it level design and how revolutionary it was for its time. I just don't get much enjoyment or pleasure playing through it.

Armed Police Batrider. No game should need that level of memorisation and secret codes to play, and it's even more obtuse than it's predecessor Battle Garegga.

Ive never like ANY of the final fantasy games, the combat system is completely rubbish for a game of that style.

A bit of a narrow-minded comment, considering how across all Final Fantasy games the battle system varies hugely. You must not like any RPG battle systems, because every RPG battle system has something in common with one of the Final Fantasy ones.

I would say Oblivion, the way everything scales as you level up really irritated me, I could hardly play as a Thief style character without getting my ass handed to me after I got to about level 20.

Also Taylor I would like justification for your comment.

Wha!? Thief was a great style of play as long as you planned it out a little; you either hybrid with mage or warrior. Being a thief you'd be mad not to put points into Archery (though you can ignore it I guess if you do extra blade work) and light armour; you're sorted. You then either use Illusion/Conjuration to hide and distract enemies, or you get mad backstab bonuses for longswordin' someone from behind. I've played the game too many times now, and I'd say the sole time I actually decided to go for a true thief (Ranger w/magic) it was probably one of the most fun playthroughs.

OT: Dragon Age Origins.

I just couldn't get into it at all.

Turn based battling isnt in every RPG.
Yes it is!!! (unless it has no combat at all)
If it's not turn based it's an action-RPG not an RPG.

Things like Neverwinter Nights still count because you have a button that turns it back to being turn based.

Fine, not getting into another argument about FF so ill change my comment...

I don't like Final Fantasy. (< Full stop right there)

Street Fighter IV
Grand Theft Auto IV
Halo (series)
Bioshock
Little Big Planet
Killzone 2
Call of Duty (series)
Gears of War (series)
God of War (series)
Final Fantasy (IV and XII being the exceptions)

That doesn't make FF good.

Eh, isn't an action RPG still a RPG lol.
Depends on how the combat system works.
The importnat bit is all your abilities being tied to your characters atruibutes and a random number generator, and that differnt skills take a certain time (No. of turns) to use+ cooldown. (As per Dungeons and Dragons)
MMO RPGs are, you pick use this move on this target. it then uses real time cooldowns, keeping the turn base, like with Final Fantasy's ATB.

Requiring you to actualy aim weapons etc. rather than it being done based on atributes is wrong, as is skils being near instant, without suffering cooldown. At least some global cooldown is needed, long enough so reaction time doesn't come into play majorly (around 0.7 seonds).

@Reaper: Regardless at how you look at it. A game with "RPG" as it's genre, is an RPG regardless of it's combat system. Maybe years ago, it would've been as simple as basing it off some turn or time based system, but the way things have developed, the RPG genre is no longer tied down to a measly one or two combat systems. Similar things can be said for the adventure/action genres and so on.

If you want examples of RPGs, or more specifically, JRPGs running on combat systems not time based/turn based. Look to stuff like, infinite undiscovery as an example.

Starcraft 2
You think its a plus to play like the orignal but no far better has happened since then but the bits between the tedious gamplay are nice.

and why does a not very demanding game run so badly.

wiki definition of RPG (bold for VG relavent bit)
A role-playing game (RPG) is a game in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting. Players take responsibility for acting out these roles within a narrative, either through literal acting, or through a process of structured decision-making or character development. Actions taken within the game succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines

Action RPGs can violate that last part. Action based combat makes actions that should be 100% failure have a success rate; you can use the action game skill to do things that should be imposible in character (especialy in regards to dodgeing atacks/running away).

Only way to realy fix is to start the game with very low restricted movement speed which often isn't done to a big enough degree.

Kingdom Hearts series
Persona series (Granted no one gives a **** about the first two)
Metal Gear Solid series
God of War series
BioShock (Never played the second)

Kingdom Hearts is the lowest level of RPG I've ever seen, the only redeeming factor is the Disney characters. Persona from what I played was alright but I never really "got" it besides can't be arsed with one hit kill ********. I enjoyed Metal Gear when I was younger but back then you could accept any old ****, playing it now it's just so grating, you skip a movie and that's half an hour of vital plot GONE, I want a game, not a movie. God of War was alright, but I just got half way through and lost all ambition to finish it, it's a decent hack and slash but that's it, really. Finally with BioShock it seems to be the ultimate game for pretentious gamers claiming it to be "art" when it reality it's a boring fetch quest game with a half decent atmosphere.
