I'm planning on buying the when they cry series but I'm having trouble seeing what's what I looked up when they cry and I can't tell what's what and tried MAL and I couldn't understand what's what either.

I need to know-
what's released
What goes where
Which DVDs I should get cause I'm completely confused on this series. The names are hard to understand.

take a look at that imagem and if for some reason if you any doubts, just try to look into anidb.net , its very good too.
In there you can see their chronological order, not the order they were released in japan though you can see that too in the dates.

Now whats selling... just take a look at up1 or funimation website maybe and it show probably. I think its funimation who has the show in the us but they wont have all the franchise probably..

My knowledge on this may be outdated as I'm not quite so crazy over it all as some people in these parts, but I believe your best bet is the Australian DVD sets for When They Cry so long as you can play Australian discs. The first television series was released in the US by Geneon (then later by Funimation) but it sold horribly and Funimation lost interest in licensing any more.

IIRC all that that has actually been released (in Australia) are the first two television seasons. You want to get the complete collection of When They Cry (Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni) and also the complete collection (or two half-collections) for When They Cry 2 (Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni: Kai).

I don't believe that anyone has given the OAVs an official English release yet so you may have to wait for those.

These two are the first 2 complete seasons released in australia by Siren visual

NISA also released umineko when they cry, someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think that it is just set in the same universe (I haven't watched any of them) so you wouldn't need them to understand the first two seasons.

There's another reason why I want to get it

You see I got my man to watch ghost hunt with me and she enjoyed it and she says she likes anime like this and I thought dusk maiden is a good choice and I heard when they cry is a scary anime and I thought why not but like I said I had trouble tell what I should get but if all I need are those 3 then I'm all set.

Just to double check these 3 are the only ones that has been release

Indeed, they are the only 3 that have English releases .

Hope you enjoy watching them, as Higurashi is my favourite anime of all time <3 And I loved watching Umineko as well :3

Eugh why £51 as I'm interested in them too. Yes I got a bonus from work but I want that to pay for a holiday in April so I cannot splurge to spending £100+ on an anime. *sigh* :(

While you're good to go picking up the Siren Visual releases of Higurashi (the third season Rei is okay, but not necessary to the narrative; the less said about the fourth season Kira the better), I feel it's best to warn you now, Umineko is NOT a complete series. For a first half it's relatively enjoyable - not a patch on Higurashi, of course - but it just ends, and considering its age, I doubt we're going to be getting a second series to finish the story. Although, I suppose you could play the Visual Novels and/or read the manga.

Very good but there's a lil problem

My mum doesn't like sub anime because she hates to read and try to watch it at the same time.

But I'm sure you won't need the second season to see what happens next right?

Season 1 is the 4 question arcs, and 2 answer arcs (retelling/re-imagining two of the question arcs with additional info from a different perspective)

Season 2 is an extra arc to make up for some things S1 missed and the final 2 answer arcs leading to the full solution.

Season 1 is ok on its own I guess but you really need season 2 for the full picture.

Well, it depends. On one hand, I think the first season stands alone ok so long as you're happy with it being really mysterious. On the other, the second explains everything about the mysteries of the first, so if you want to know what really happened then it's essential.

(Gah, Rosencrantz types faster than I do.)
