I’m 28 years old, and my friends finally convinced me to give anime a try! Which one would you recommend I watch first?

It depends a bit on your tastes and preferences in media generally, but I would suggest for films maybe something by Studio Ghibli or one of the works of Makoto Shinkai or Mamoru Hosoda, for series perhaps Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood or Fruits Basket (the 2019 reboot). Satoshi Kon is also an interesting, well regarded director (sadly now deceased) who's films you might enjoy. What do you tend to enjoy watching (in terms of genres) outside of anime?

I think Death Note is a great one to start, especially if you've never given anime a shot before.
It's one I find new fans very much enjoy as it's easy to get into/follow - it's a cat and mouse type thing, which you've more than likely seen before in other films and TV shows, so you'll be familiar with the tone and type of plot.
But like RadFem says, explore shows within genres you like for films/TV shows and you can't go too far wrong.
