Hello, I'm Wee Boon from Singapore. That's "Wee Boon" as a first name and never "Wee" or "Boon", though my local friends do tend to call me "Boon" or my surname "Tang" as a shorthand. But I digress.

My relationship with anime is on-and-off over recent years, though I've seen just about most of the classic titles out there like Higurashi, Death Note, Gurren Lagann, Clannad, Angel Beats, Steins;Gate, FMA:B, Monster, Ghost in the Shell, Lain, Hell Girl, Cardcaptor Sakura, Haruhi, Cowboy Bebop, Digimon, Pokemon, and many more. If you name it, I've probably seen it if it was released before 2010 (unless it's shounen titles like One Piece and Naruto; I don't like shounen). But having seen all the big time "must-watch" titles, I guess I just got tired of the newer ones and didn't really find anything that catch my interest.

But recently, I'm having the "on again" phase of my anime relationship, so I picked up where I last left off with Blood+ and Monogatari Second Season. Can't say I regret it actually, considering that Blood+ had a lot more depth in its characters than just another generic vampire anime and is the right kind of melancholy for me, while Monogatari SS' characters are masterfully written... and episode 20 broke me. Dang, didn't see that coming at all. First time I cried that hard to an anime for a looong time since Clannad.

And that's how I found this forum. I was Googling for an active anime community where I could discuss the anime I'm currently watching. Tried anime Discord servers, but they just aren't really as active or engaging in my often one-sided conversations, which is why I returned to the traditional Internet forums instead.

My first love was not anime, however, but movies, and I've also seen many classic titles like Back to the Future, Star Wars original trilogy, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Ghostbusters, The Godfather, Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Gone with the Wind, Taxi Driver, Alien 1 to Prometheus, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Dracula (the original one), Frankenstein (original), Wolf Man (you get the point), Nosferatu, Pixar movies, Disney movies, and It's A Wonderful Life. I've experienced so many heartfelt stories, drama and horrors through the magic of the silver screen, love movies with all my heart, and I'm still discovering movies every year.

Last but not least, I love Spider-Man. He's my favorite superhero of all time, next to MCU Captain America. I just love his sense of responsibility and righteousness despite being an average Joe like us with an average morality and all the selfishness that comes with it. You are admirable if you always do the right thing like Cap, but you're even more inspiring if you do the right thing in spite of your heart tempting you to do the easy thing. That's Spidey for me. Persevering in the face of insurmountable odds. Minus MCU Spidey. He's a spoiled little Zoomer and an Iron Man fanboy, and I dislike him with all my heart.

It's a lot of fun round here and some good chat. Blood+ is great. It's been years since I saw it! May have to give it another watch soon!

If you havent seen them then I'd reccomend adding Durarara, Made in Abyss, Girls Last Tour and School-Live. Based on what you've said I reckon you'd enjoy them.
 
Seen Durarara and School-Live; good recommendations. Durarara has such good character writing, but I heard the light novel is supposedly darker than the anime. And School-Live... oh, god, so good. It's almost everything I want in an anime with a good twist. I wanted something like that ever since I watched Higurashi and Madoka Magica.

Heard a lot about Made in Abyss; already have that on my plan-to-watch list. Girls Last Tour too, another good rec. Thanks for the recs, my man.
 
Welcome to the forums! We have been doing our best to keep both the main forums, the write-up side (news, reviews) and also the discord active over the years.

I love movies as well. I have a monthly membership with my local cinema (though it's on-hold due to UK lockdown) but I managed to watch a good variety; from anime like Ride Your Wave, newer hits like 1917, Dark Waters and The Invisible Man to niche titles like Takashi Miike's First Love and Richard Stanley's Color Out of Space. I also like sci-fi and horror though I haven't delved too much into the horror genre so I'm missing out on a ton of stuff, so my current watched list has been the likes of Kairo, Ring, The Thing, Suspiria (both the original and remake), Ari Aster's Hereditary and MidSommar, and the recent film The Lighthouse.

Speaking of games (and I like collecting Japanese games), have you had a go with the JRPG genre? I understand that some are quite challenging, but I always tend to have a walkthrough ready when needed (mainly to see what recommended level should be used, like what I have done with Final Fantasy X and Persona 3-5).

Very nice taste there. I recognize some of these titles, even having seen them, like Ring, The Thing, Hereditary and MidSommar. I've already rented MidSommar and I'm planning to watch it soon too. Also really wanted to watch The Invisible Man, but unfortunately, my local theaters don't screen the movie with English subtitles, only Chinese ones... and I usually need my American movies with subtitles (or as they are referred to as "captions"). The accent is just too thick for my understanding sometimes.

Unfortunately, I'm more of a mainstream Hollywood kind of guy. lol I enjoy intelligent films with a meaningful and emotional message, but the kind of films I like shouldn't be too "artsy" or preachy, and should still provide some semblance of entertainment. Hence most of my favorites kinda lie on the mainstream side of the threshold, such as The Dark Knight, Alien (1979), Predator (1987), Terminator 2, Back to the Future, The Fly (1986); mostly older titles from around the '80s period. I do make an effort to go out of my way to watch the more niched titles from time to time though.

I did play Persona 4 and 5. I don't really enjoy some of the plots of JRPGs, however, because they can go into rather generic anime territory, featuring the familiar tropes and cliches you would see in anime like the power of friendship, a tragic backstory for the edgelord, or the worst of all sinners, the deus ex machina, when someone is rescued at the nick of time when it's convenient for the plot. So yeah, not a fan. I did like Persona 4 and 5 to some extent, but overall, I still prefer American RPGs like Mass Effect, Dragon Age: Origin and Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Not meaning to plug other anime forums on here, but there is a fairly active anime Sub-forum on Blu-ray.com, with members from all over the world, including quite a few from this forum as well; I came here from over there, because I import a fair amount of UK anime, and am active on both. Also, The Fandom Post forum has some threads where they discuss individual anime series, or at least they used to, I haven't been on that forum in a long while, though.

Nice. I'll give them a look in the near future. I'm just getting settled down in one community (two forums to be exact), so it might take a while before I'm comfortable with joining new forums.
