Happy Birthday MARIO!

Super Mario is 25 years old today and I think we should celebrate one of the most versatile videogame characters ever.

From brawling to basketball with karting in between, there have been few franchises that have maintained such quality and delight with every release (apart from Super Mario 2 which was bloody hard).

Anyway, what are your favourite Mario games?

Makes me feel old - he is more than 10 years younger than me :(

I have only played a couple of Mario games but one of my favourites is my Donkey Kong Game & Watch which is probably one of the first video games I played.

Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 were the most memorable for me

but while i like Mario games for their consistency, i also criticise them for the same reason

let us be honest, Mario games haven't really deviated that much since DK, unlike Sonic the Hedgehog, which actually tried something different towards the end of the 90's, sure nearly all of the Sonic games since 2003 are pure crap, but they at least tried something different, albeit gimmicky at times

i'm not hating on Mario mind, and i'm not intending to start a flame war either, it's just an opinion

I like Mario, but I don't loooove Mario. I think it'd be Sunshine for the game of his I've played for the longest amount of time. I've played most of his games, proper ones at least, and I think that's the one I enjoyed the most. I really liked my GameCube.

I really like Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time and Super Mario 64 but Mario Kart DS has to be my favourite.

I have Paper Mario on the GameCube but haven't played it yet. GameCube = Underrated console.

As far as Sonic goes. Nobody mention Shadow the Hedgehog - whoever thought an emo Sonic with guns would be cool really needs a good talking to.

I can't deny it, Shadow was awesome. Not necessarily because who he was, but because what he was. He got all existential and brought a little bit of depth into Sonic's world. As a playable character, he sucked hard in his own game, but as a supporting one - he was sick, loved Sonic Adventure 2. He's basically Sasuke. He gets a lot of ****, acts like ****, but also adds a more interesting element to the universe. There are other Sonic characters I could have done without though, Silver, sometimes Knuckles, Cream, Amy, Big the Cat etc etc. I don't really need Sonic to be moody either.

And yeah, GameCube was ace. It died a painful death, but its beginning was pretty great.

Fo me Mario Kart DS, Super Mario 64 DS and Super Mario World are my favourites. Never been a big mario player and I doubt I'd get any more, since I've got the best of most worlds, racer, 3d and 2d marios heh. All portable too =P

Super Mario World. The epitome of 2D game design.

Also Mario Kart 64 still gets played in multiplayer, and considering that's now 13/14 years old that's pretty good going.

As in follow Mario 64's example and go into the 3D realm?

Super Mario 64 was the last revolutionary game ever made.

Doesn't anyone remember November 1995 when the game was first shown off and 98% of game studios scrapped their projects completely after seeing it? I still have the Total! magazine issue showing the uncompleted game... nothing ever came of the 40 levels that were supposed to be included.

As for changing that much I can't really say that Super Mario World, Super Mario World 2 and Super Mario 64 are similar...

Which is odd considering his first game (Donkey Kong) is 4 years older than that.

Ok it means Super Mario as oposed to just normal Mario.

Well he was technically "Jumpman" back then ;)
He called was Mario in Mario Bros and that's from '83.

This is definatly for Super Mario not regular Mario.
