GUN X SWORD

Just recently bought the gun x sword boxset because it was cheap.

How cheap is cheap? From where was this cheapness obtained? because, muchly, I am of a mind to purchase this series.

Ah, I see...

I looked for it earlier on the usual suspects' websites - the series is surprisingly hard to find!

You usually ask for advice BEFORE throwing cash around...

GxS is a decent enough 'one watch' anime, from what little I remember. Its revenge theme and Kill Bill vibe carry it, to begin with, but it eventually reaches a point where there are one too many cliches and a Sasuke-esque, 'emotionless' killing-person with a sword.

There's a a retarded battle towards the end where a pole dancer dances inside a mecha to control it - that's one of the few things I do remember quite clearly.

I suppose, since I'm currently reading FMA and enduring the shounen 'KILLING/REVENGE IS WRONG!' ****, the fact the lead doesn't mess around when it comes to getting even is a major plus point.

In the last boxset sale, AoL had GunXSword for £19.99, but that's all sold out now. It's back up to £35.99 there.

Cheapest I can find it is £29.99 at Play.com

My mistake £27.99 through Playtrade, with mvment as the Playtrader, who I believe is MVM.

EDIT, it was that poledancing mecha moment that killed my interest in this series as well.

Pro-tip: it's generally advisable to canvas opinion on something you're unsure about before you spend money on it. Though in this case you made a good call, for Gun x Sword is great. And if it wasn't for this thread we wouldn't have Aion moaning about the way in which Fasalina pilots her mech... again. And he has an ally now!

Why the two of you are so hung up on that particular scene confuses me somewhat. In the grand sceme of things it's so utterly inconsequential. The random filler fanservice episode near the end is far more deserving of viewers' ire.

Strangely, I can't really remember much in the way of fanservice in GunxSword at all. Or the pole dancing pilot, for that matter. It has been a couple of years since I watched it though.

It was a fun show anyway. Wouldn't call it a classic, but it kept me entertained, and some of the side characters were pretty amusing (especially the geriatric power rangers :) ).

There was a silly episode towards the end where the characters ended up in swimsuits or somesuch. I don't remember much about it myself.

I probably overrated it a little bit because I love revenge stories and I burned through my box set in a couple of days. And I was genuinely surprised that in a medium where characters are often swayed by a heartfelt speech, Van remained resolute in his desire for revenge. But the first third of the series is comparatively weak and it is highly derivative.

I have had zero interest in this title ever since it was first announced, and only monitored this thread for moderation purposes, but now you're all talking about pole dancing in mecha and I'm suddenly worried I'll end up buying it in a moment of weakness :/

Hah. Well, I like the pole dancing scene because Fasalina is the sexiest character in anime, ever, and without even trying most of the time. It would have been a tragedy--nay, a crime--had she not been given the opportunity to indulge her more sensual side. EDIT: I wish I'd been able to get one of these, but by the time I watched the show it was too late.

Would I recommend a purchase on that basis alone? Seeing as you enjoy Ikki Tousen and Queens Blade (presumably) for the smut, why the hell not?

GxS is a lot like Outlaw Star in the sense how much you'll like it is linked to how experienced with anime you are. If you've seen a fair amount, then the characters will do nothing for you and the cliches will make your eyes roll.

A missing brother, a sister searching for him, and a super-strong guy - with a grudge against the villain who's inevitably with the missing brother - helping the sister... where ever have I seen that set-up before?...

Basically: if your idea of 10/10 anime is a Ghibli film with purty animation or a TV series with lots of school girls wearing belts instead of skirts, you might rate it highly. Otherwise, no.

So the premise has some similarities with one other show? Okay. I'd watched some of Chrono Crusade before starting GunxSword but I can honestly say CC wasn't one of the shows it reminded me of. Maybe I'll watch the rest of it some day...

I've already mentioned my appreciation of how the revenge plot was played out, Van being a standout character by virtue of his unshakable convcition when most others would have wavered. It was also interesting how he was often the only character, including the antagonists, acting solely in his own interest. Then there's the staging of the battles (if there's one thing Tanaguchi is good at, it's mech fights), the giant robot parodies and general sense of humour that keeps things from getting too heavy, and a satisfying, conclusive ending. The old guys! The sexiest character ever! Etc.

...Whereas I'm being alternately put off the show and then having my curiosity piqued again.

Maybe I'll watch something a bit classier. Like Godannar. ;)

Nyuk nyuk!

Nah, just kidding - I'm finding thew variety of opinions here quite interesting.
