I'm not disputing Miyazaki's genius, but if I was to choose between taking "Spirited Away" & "Princess Mononoke" or "Grave of The Fireflies" & "Only Yesterday" to a desert island Takahata would definately win.kupoartist said:Ehh... Sure Grave of the Fireflies is one of Ghibli's greatest, but he's made far fewer movies for the studio, and far, far fewer of them are notable. Pom Poko, My Neighbours the Yamadas are just tedious, and Only Yesterday is interesting but not really much more than a typically soapy rom-drama in animation.ayase said:Takahata > Miyazaki.
That is all.
I enjoy the different approaches they have to filmmaking, much like the "Miyazaki the Entertainer vs, Oshii the Philosopher" thing because I can see merit in both approaches, and Takahata's films strike a nice balance. I love Only Yeserday, and thought it was more about memory, dreams (mostly unfulfilled, which I liked - neither Miyazaki nor Takahata ever stoop to sacharine happy endings) and how priorities change as people grow older than romance, but that's just my interpretation.
For true effect you should probably watch Totoro after GotF, as I believe that's how they were shown at the cinema as a double bill?
