Grave of the Fireflies

Takahata > Miyazaki.

That is all. ;)
Ehh... Sure Grave of the Fireflies is one of Ghibli's greatest, but he's made far fewer movies for the studio, and far, far fewer of them are notable. Pom Poko, My Neighbours the Yamadas are just tedious, and Only Yesterday is interesting but not really much more than a typically soapy rom-drama in animation.
I'm not disputing Miyazaki's genius, but if I was to choose between taking "Spirited Away" & "Princess Mononoke" or "Grave of The Fireflies" & "Only Yesterday" to a desert island Takahata would definately win.

I enjoy the different approaches they have to filmmaking, much like the "Miyazaki the Entertainer vs, Oshii the Philosopher" thing because I can see merit in both approaches, and Takahata's films strike a nice balance. I love Only Yeserday, and thought it was more about memory, dreams (mostly unfulfilled, which I liked - neither Miyazaki nor Takahata ever stoop to sacharine happy endings) and how priorities change as people grow older than romance, but that's just my interpretation.

For true effect you should probably watch Totoro after GotF, as I believe that's how they were shown at the cinema as a double bill?

It was a good one, not enough to make me cry personally but it sure did pull at my heart strings quite a bit as they say. Wasn't a fan of the art style personally but that is just a minor issue for me.

I enjoyed it (if you can class it as joy). With it being one of the deeper Ghibli movies I found it quite moving. Problem with it being a sad is, I've only seen it once. Not a fan of sad movies. *sniff*

Watched it again this morning after recording it yesterday, though it's not as nearly touching as it was the first time. Then again, maybe that's got something to do with the fact that I watched it 8.00 am ^^

I bought it for £10 in HMV, I did'nt cry, I did'nt enjoy the fuilm much either then, I found the girl irrittating and the film overall very frustrating.

I want my £10 back

I have to agree with you, I cant say I found the film to be that good.
I didn't cry, It was very clear to me what would happen from the start.

On an up note tho, I didn't pay for it. Thank you Film 4! :D

Inevitability is more powerful than the unknown.

Watch Witchblade and you'll know what I mean.

How damn true. I loved GoTF as I like thought provoking stuff that tears at your heartstrings as well. It made me ball like a baby but also made me think as well. I always say that this and Mononoke are my favourite Ghibli films because I think they are awesome!
