Grave of the Fireflies

Gayness is gay. Real men don't die - not even when a pair of tragic siblings go through hell, face starvation and get separated by the grim reaper.

But, yes, it's a bloody good film. It's been impossible to get on eBay for cheap since even anime newbies know about Ghibli releases. One day, when I'm feeling slightly less cheap, I might just buy it.

Takahata > Miyazaki.

That is all. ;)

It's usually available fairly cheap new. Unless of course we're going through one of those strange periods where every major retailer decides to drop their discounts and charge £20 a piece for Ghibli films... Hmm. If I didn't know better I might suspect something slightly dodgy about that...

There are only three circumstances under which you can watch Grave of the Fireflies and not bawl uncontrollably. These are as follows:

a) You have sold your soul to Satan; b) you're a robot; or c) are physically unable to produce tears.

It's a scientifically proven fact that you're either gay or a woman if you start blarting when watching GotF. Getting a little watery eyed is acceptable, but needing tissue just because what you're watching is a little sad?

I've always been a bit odd when it comes to crying. I tend to be able to cry very easy when frustrated/very angry, yet I can never cry when simply watching a program/film. I suppose that makes me half a cry-baby...

---------

I don't like many Ghibli films. Aside from Princess Mononoke, GotF (not directed by the main man) and Nausicaa (8/10), the other two I've seen I hated, with my ratings for Howl's Castle and Spirited Away being 4/10 and 5/10.

...and I used to respect you!

Actually, that's a lie :p

I didn't really think GotF was as brilliant as it's reputation suggests. It's robust and effective, but I'd hardly say it was anything over 7/10 material. I did watch it dubbed, so perhaps that took from the experience (?) though I didn't think the dub was bad at all.

Do you try to be heinously idiotic with everything you say, or does it just come naturally? :]

That's because you're young and impressionable, so it's easy to understand. Soon you will start to love me again.

And The Geek: It comes natural to me. Does that make it a talent?

Just admit it: You cried like a baby when you watched it.

... Whoa, I actually agree with Aion on something. Though throw Laputa in with the good ones too, srsly.

I've yet to convince a few of my friends to watch this...

It's a very good film, one of my favourite Ghibli films though it takes willpower to resist the urge to hang yourself at the end of it all.

It's interesting people say it makes them depressed. It just makes me very angry at the warmongers of the world who happily throw thousands, millions even of innocent lives away for their own greed, power and stubborness.

If anything it makes me want to kill them. Now then, where's my notebook...

I bought it for £10 in HMV, I did'nt cry, I did'nt enjoy the fuilm much either then, I found the girl irrittating and the film overall very frustrating.

I want my £10 back

Ehh... Sure Grave of the Fireflies is one of Ghibli's greatest, but he's made far fewer movies for the studio, and far, far fewer of them are notable. Pom Poko, My Neighbours the Yamadas are just tedious, and Only Yesterday is interesting but not really much more than a typically soapy rom-drama in animation.

You have the same mentality as most of the major serial killers in history :p

I loved Grave of the Fireflies, it was the most powerful of the Ghibli films to me.

I bought that tin of sweets that the girl eats with a picture of the girl on it from a Japanese food shop near Picadilly, it's on the same road as the Japanese Manga shop, it's that's even still there! :S
