Google Chrome

Google has finally prepared to launch it's own browser, after like.... three years in the making:

http://gears.google.com/chrome/

The download link should be up and running before the day is out (as confirmed by Google themselves), but when is anyone's guess.

So, will you be converting to Google or suckling on your Firefox teet? :p

I'll probably switch permanently, or let it replace FF completely, with Opera being the primary browser.

Screenshots ahoy-hoy:

I'll at least give it a try for a few days, like I've done with every other browser.

Hopefully it'll be available shortly though, as 2pm ET is GMT -5 and it's already half an hour past that.

I'll give it a try tomorrow at work (not at home - I don't use Windows here). If it manages to suck less than Firefox I'll switch cheerfully.

I like the minimalist approach, but there are things like AdBlocker Plus and FireFTP that I'd miss if I stopped using FF. As with a lot of new-fangled stuff I'll probably let the experts play for a bit and make the faults public before trying it though!

I can probably speak for a lot of people when I say this; the adblocking capabilities (if there is any on the core installation), will make or break it for me in terms of usability, be it seldom or a dumpjob after one use.

Google's already the search engine on Firefox's homepage and has freaking loads of functions. I don't need a new browser on top of that and the other browsers available.

I'll stick with Firefox and Opera.

Does the world really need another web browser? As if Apple trying to sneak Safari onto my machine every time it updates Quicktime wasn't bad enough...

Fixed, in accordance with general principle.

Downloaded it earlier, using it now. So far so good.

The browser itself looks nice, with a better default skin than most, although the slightly large URL font is annoying (me being picky).

Bookmarks are saved and sorted in much the same way as Firefox 3.

The built-in spell checker is definitely useful; underlining incorrect spellings in red and offering suggestions when right-clicking the incorrectly spelt word.

Tabs are easy to use, but it's annoying that you can close the browser down when you click the small cross of the last remaining tab... it should at least bring you to that page that comes up when you click the new tab icon, like Opera does. It should also ask you if you want to close the browser if you have more than one tab open when clicking on the main cross in the top right-hand corner, in the same way Firefox does.

The variety of options/settings isn't nearly as large as what Firefox offers. It's basic, so it has things like setting it as your default browser, setting a homepage, fonts and languages, setting your download location, and a few internet protection options (pop-up blocker, phishing and malware protection etc).

It also seems a little faster than Firefox (browsing the web and starting it up), though that could just be me.

Y'know, I thought I needed Quicktime for .mov files, but it turns out VLC Media Player will play them. So in a very strange way I could say thanks Kurogane for making me go and find this out.

But sadly, as we're going by general principle, I'm afraid it looks like I'll have to tell you to go **** yourself. :)

Apple...starter of arguements, hahah.

On the Chrome front, its quite nice if a little too basic, and the tab posistioning is taking some getting used to.

I'm quite happy with FireFox 3, it works on my mac and PC, I know how it works, and how it breaks...

If nothing else it's reassuring to know something's faults.

This is just the beta sample, and I'm guessing whatever judgement gets passed from the holier-than-thou interweb net-nerds, will be considered aptly.

Someone had to say it eventually. :p

i've enjoyed using firefox, it does everything i want.

i doubt it will have a big enough impact yet. Internet explorer still has a 80% share with firefox just begining to get some power behind it.

You took it the right way. Good man. It's not easy to get that level of japing across over the internet.

checked this out and TBH, CBA. It's way behind safari or firefox. If and when it gets ahead, I might take a second look. Usually google don't disapoint, I said usually....

It's a solid browser so far IMHO, but the thing that's really pissing me off- and I think this has already been mentioned, is how it closes once the final tab has been shut down.

That's just ******* annoying.
