GitS: Arise - Trailer & OP

Apparently the new series will be a "prequel", starring a "young" Motoko Kusanagi.

As much as I know there's no Kamiyama, no Kanno and not even Atsuko Tanaka, I'm surprised at how negative much of the reaction to the footage has been. It's more GitS for god's sake - I haven't been this excited since electronic brain pancake crystal elderly.

Those Kaneda comparisons aren't going to go away are they? She even has the bike.

I didn't see anything wrong with any of that (apart from the fact that "heavily cyborg" is a terrible piece of Engrish). The first half of the trailer is really playing up the Oshii film connection... Here's hoping there'll still be plenty of philosophising between bouts of ass-kickery.

Speaking of VAs, I think the one thing that would seal the deal for me now would be the guaranteed return of the SAC English dub cast (it's one of the few dubs along with Black Lagoon that I actually prefer over the Japanese) - I'm terrified at the prospect of Mokoko being voiced by someone other than Mary Elizabeth McGlynn.

"Heavily Cyborg".

To be honest, I can't say I'm negative about the footage but I'm not too positive either because...nothing was really shown that really grabbed me.

Ayase - At the very least, I expect Richard Epcar will do whatever he can to return as Batou.

I'll be buying this on release, hopefully Manga UK will announce something in the near future and convinced it'll get a blu-ray release. Wonder if they'll re-release any of the other GITS stuff on Blu-ray aswell

It looks intriguing, GITS:SAC is brilliant, so it has set the bar high, and I doubt this will match it, but that's a big ask. As long as it's interesting and has a good overarching plot then i'm sure it'll be good.

I can see Mardock Scramble tones in this. Not that that is a bad thing, I pay no attention to the butthurt otaku's throwing their Matoko figurines out of their rooms they seldom ever leave. They need to get out more. BTW I love that fusion-techno jazz vibe. 'tis the reason I love vocaloids soooo much. :p

Yeah, the screenplay for Arise is being handled by Tow Ubakata, so I think we'll almost certainly get a little bit of Mardock Scramble in the mix this time. I'm rarely given to doing videos about trailers, but the sheer waves of hate eminating from the hivemind spurred me into action. I consider it a plea for sanity.

I cannot help but see this with mundane familiarly.

So it's something that's already been done being done slightly differently. What isn't? There's nothing new under the sun.

Nice defence of reason Prof, it needed to be done - And you actually call it "GitS", that's interesting. I abbreviate when writing for speed but when speaking I'd tend to say "Ghost in the Shell" because GitS... well, sounds like gits. I wouldn't want people to get the wrong idea and think I was being derogatory towards the franchise.

Trailer has me quite excited, especially the second half. I don't think the OP song and animation could possibly be any duller, though.

I actually quite like that understated OP and song. The music is nice and chilled, and nothing about that opening appears to be trying too hard, which for me is a contrast to most anime openings that I'm grateful for.

Much like everyone else in this thread, I quite enjoyed that trailer personally, I certainly see no causes for concern. And I actually welcome the redesign of Makoto. I'm no fan of her design (Whether more faithful to the manga or not) in SAC, and was always pained to remember how much more awesome she looked in the movie's. I kinda like the Kaneda vibe she's got going on here haha. Likewise, I also actually welcome the break from Kamiyama. His work on SAC (particularly 2nd gig) was mostly exemplary, but I feel like we've seen the extent of his vision for GITS now, and the time is right for at least a little bit of change. I have to admit, I'm rarely I taken by the usual prequel premise of "look everyone's younger now! Cool!", but I'm willing to roll with this.

I quite like the opening music. I think some anime fans see Yoko Kanno as the best thing since sliced bread, and refuse to consider that other artists or styles of music could be enjoyable. Changing the music will help give Arise its own mood and identity from the rest of the franchise.

I am interested in seeing how having a younger Mokoto will change the group dynamic. By the time Gits:sac roles around she is a respected leader within section nine. A younger, less experienced Mokoto will not have the same role within the group.

While there is some truth in that, please don't assume that because someone doesn't like the OP music it means they worship at the altar of Ms Kanno and automatically regard everything else as inferior.

The OP music is fine, I guess, if you're standing in an elevator or settling down for a mid-morning cup of coffee, but it doesn't excite me in the way that an opening to an action show should. And forgetting the song for a moment, the direction and editing are not in the same league as this.

But yes, Motoko's design is an improvement, not least for dispensing with the handlebar hair of old, and everything else seems very "GitS" to me. Should be good.

Heh, yeah - point taken. I think I've just referred to it as GitS for so long, that I do it without thinking. Solid State Society probably suffers this the worst, as it is basically GitS:SSS.

One point I'd like to make on the Yoko Kanno concerns:

While I agree with the point, broadly, that it's not the end of the world to have somebody else scoring this show, I WOULD also contend that Kanno's soundtracks to GITS gave the show a lot of gravitas and atmosphere.

True story time: My aunt, who is vehemently set against watching anything that isn;t live action or, indeed, prefaced with 'CSI', asked me for recommendations for shows to watch a while back. When i mentioned this amazing sci-fi show I had been glued to, she was all ears. Then she found out it was anime, and hysterical laughter ensued.

Then she watched the show.

She was taken with the mature edge of the show, and remarked on how - and I quote: 'It was like a full on TV series! With proper music and tension and stuff!'

My point? Never underestimate the power of a good - and I mean REALLY good - soundtrack. It's truthfully going to be a tough act for anyone to follow.

From what i saw, looks good to me. Dont care about the aspect of the character to be honest.

I like gits but never enjoyed that much, maybe cause i was too young to understand it. Now im thinking about rewatching everything and i know i will enjoy more than ever the franchise.

I already knew that but thanks for sharing cause there are people who must not know. What i'm afraid is that the ovas will take a long time to come out all of them like hellsing ultimante or evangellion movies lately. :?

It's worse than that - it's GitS:SAC-SSS
